Skillet
If I made all my money in cash and don't report it to avoid taxes but the IRS never saw it...is it still illegal? Yes, but in that instance, more power to you!
jmg343
so in other words you just plain don't care about the Law Wow Good Luck to you then I care about some. Others, not so much.
nyantler
Somehow I'm not worried about sending this thread off topic... this year I have had numerous comments on my page from "hunters" that didn't know about the doe only areas they were hunting in, some that had no idea that you could use a crossbow in NY, some that didn't know you could kill a bear in NY, and one that thought the northern tier hunting seasons were the same as the southern tier... and of course.. those who had no idea of the sunrise - sunset shooting hours... they didn't realize that sunrise and sunset were actually a time... scary!
jmg343
The instructor told me all that jazz about the padlock about 20 years ago when I was taking my bow hunters safety course. Suprisingly, I never looked it up.
Jaeger
I'm not going to say that I agree with the OP, But I do have a question or two. For all the individuals that say the law is the law and that's it, why can't we as tax payers question the laws? Why is it okay to hunt half an hour before and after sunrise/sunset in Ohio, but illegal across an arbitrary line in western NY? Why in NY can you hunt waterfowl a half an hour before and after sunrise/sunset, but not deer? I understand safety, but is it really more or less safe one way or the other? I don't know the statistics, but are there more accidents in states that allow the half an hour before and after sunrise/sunset? I really think that it is our duty to question our officials regularly. I'm not saying to take matters into your own hands and make the rules as you go but what are the steps to change the rules? Do hunters really have input into regulations? I've hunted for 25 years and never once been asked for my input on regulations, have you? Just some thoughts... You may not have been asked but isn't that begging the question? That's thinking in the wrong direction. If you want a law changed or just explained you cannot wait until they come to you and ask. If you want it changed, then the obligation is on you to speak up, write, call, do something. Our country's system is based on public participation, waiting for them to come to you is not how it works. (Rack Attack, using "you" generally, not directly at you personally, people hate it when I say "one" should...etc.) As far as this threads' main topic, law breaking (and forum rule breaking, we don't need your attempt to appear macho with the abbreviated curses), it is everyone's obligation to challenge laws if you disagree with them. Sometime even by breaking them. But that is a far cry from just breaking the rules/laws so you can appear "bad" or "tough" or a law breaking rebel. That accomplishes nothing but getting what you want and taking the risk. If you're comfortable with that, thank you for letting us know what kind of person you are. For me, I stick to the rules. It's a gut thing that I was raised with. And yes, I did steal some candy as a kid, 50' down the street I turned around and went back and paid for it. Call me a ninny, wimp what have you. I felt better in my gut and at the end of the day, that's what counts to me. Knowing I did the right thing.
mxsmitz201
Deos not matter what you think. Does not matter what you can see. It is a law. Do you pick and choose other laws to abide on a daily bases? Yup!
Paula
So then I would like to know, do all of you law abiding do-gooders, who never ever break or bend a single law of the land, check the weather channel, farmer's almanac, or what have you every single time you set foot in the woods, to hunt, so that you know the minute you're allowed to take that shot and the minute you've got to stop and unload? I have not looked at regulation book too much yet but there is a time table in it for a reason. I keep a book in my truck during hunting and check the time every night. mxsmitz201
I have a brain. I use it. Just because our scrubby governor doesn't use his like when he pulled the safe act out if his ass doesn't mean I'm gonna follow it, because again I have a brain and use it. Oh and I have a spine too. The same goes with this sunset sunrise bs.

The_Field_Ager
you get an extra 20 minutes or so added to Sunset on the western edge of the state where I am. Today, that would be 4:56pm If I was hunting and the BigBoy walked past at 15 yards at 4:57 pm, we would be seeing a new thread about a BigBuck down. My guess is the SS rules factor in those extra minutes of shootable light after the official time. It's like everyone driving at 70 mph in a 65 mph zone. Cops usually let it pass. It's no big deal. I would not shoot in that grey light however, when things become indistinct, even if at 15 yards I felt a good shot was viable. There is a fair play element for the deer involved as well. landtracdeerhunter
You better all look up the definition of hunting in New York State. Anyone that hasn't entered, exited the field by sunrise, sunset is all guilty of hunting before, after hours. Chew on that! Remember, I don't make the laws, the liberals do in this state. Four Season Whitetail's
There are just as many, if not more, Hunters that sit until they cant see to shoot than ones that watch the clock tick to the last second. I have even heard of deer taken by the hunter still siting that was pushed by the guy that got up 15-20 minutes before dark to leave. In this day people will do whatever they want to do regardless of some of the stupid laws on the books. We hunt an animal that is most active at the time a state says you cant hunt, Kinda makes it tough at times!
Skillet
I saw the NYSAFE act mentioned. Speaking of that, I wonder how many of the people preaching on this thread, are included in the over 95% of NY "assault weapon" owners, who failed to register their firearms under the law. Just wondering. I don't expect anyone to speak up, but I'd bet my next paycheck there's more than one.

BizCT
If shooting before sunrise or after sunset is ok because other states allow it, then is baiting ok because other states allow it? I don't see how anybody can say illegal baiting in NY is any worse than illegal shooting before/after legal hours. There's 2 types of deer killed here in Ny that we are discussing; illegal shot ones and legal shot ones. Pretty easy to determine which is which. Like I said before, getting away with an illegal shot deer is easy. Enjoying that picture or mount on your wall knowing you "bent" the rules is something you have to deal with it. I couldn't deal with it and be happy knowing I cheated.
