JFB
Long time archer and gun hunter but never really had much opportunity to hunt with riffle. I now have a place in Livingston county and just curious if you riffle fanatics change your shot placement because of your riffle (mine a 270)? I've heard of the old timer neck shots, etc. I myself am a tried and true double lung broadside guy but just curious what shot you like to take with a riffle such as 270? Lawdwaz
Double lung seems like a pretty big target.

Stick with this and you will never have a problem only difference is with a rifle you can shoot quartering too unlike a bow.
ATbuckhunter
Nothing wrong with a heart/lung shot. If its close enough ill go for the shoulder, but I have also shot deer with a rifle in the lungs only to have it go a maximum of 40 yards. Lawdwaz
.270, he went 40 yards or so He sure is a good looking buck. I'll bet you puckered up when you saw that crown coming through the woods.
The_Real_TCIII
I looked for a tenth of a second and then looked at nothing but the crosshairs lol. He went down in sight with his head behind a tree and I still waited an hour and a half before getting down to check him out. I feared ground shrinkage!
HuntOrBeHunted
Right behind the shoulder. Same as any shot I take. The deer don't run to far. But with my 30-30 they dont run at all.
dbHunterNY
I process my own. double lungs if possible. ruins less meat. on occasion before I'd square up on the shoulder and it'd take the deer off its feet. didn't matter the gun. did it with a 30-30 and 150gr ammo. last 10 years or so I always try not to hit shoulder blade or leg bone. otherwise it's like a frag grenade going off in the shoulders. bone shrapnel everywhere. multiple deer I've made two shots into both lungs and nothing else. 1st one is sufficient but 2nd one anchors them. benoits had it right. keep shooting until it falls if you can. just don't shoot up the whole body and waste meat.

ApexerER
I shot the buck I got opening day in the neck. I would normally shoot for the lungs/heart but the neck was the only shot I had and I was worried about him doing a 180 and hightailing it out of there. He dropped like a sack of potatoes.....

I guess the only thing not covered was how a straight on shot to the center brisket typically performs on a big whitetail and 270?

That's a mighty sweet buck you got . I'm right handed .... But my right eye used to be very weak ( pre LASIK ) and my left eye is my master eye, so years ago I switched to,lefty for long guns. I don't golf perhaps when I'm to old for manly activites .

Critter4321
I have been using my 270 over 25 years the only problem I can see is up close like 40 yards and under they run out at 300 its like someone pulled the rug from under them I do use a 150 grain bullet though But good luck with what ever you shoot
