Early Bear 2016

Anyone planning to hunt bear in the early season this coming September?  What are you doing to get ready for it?

I would like to. Was thinking of taking a day trip somewhere int he southern zone, just to walk and still hunt some public land. Also use the hunt in order to scout some new deer spots. Whats your plan?

Used to be a lot by me, but the farmer up the mountain was getting his corn ruined by them.  I think he got a permit to shoot them (not sure) but haven't seen any sign of any bears here for some time.  Not sure if it's worth going out for them here.  I'm checking with others who say they have seen one by them.

In my opinion even if you don't see any bear, you can use it as time in the woods to scout for deer season. Don't see the down side here especially if you don't have to travel far.

I thought about it, but it looks like ill be swamped with school work at that time.

I have zero desire to ever shoot another bear unless it is licking the tailgate of my truck but I will be out as much as possible in the Adirondacks during early bear. It's a chance to get back in the game and walk around carrying a gun. I saw the buck I killed last year in September bear "hunting" and killed him 2 months later 150yds from where I seen him in September.

That's the main reason I think I'll be out there too.  Good opportunity to see what's around.  But I do worry about spooking the bucks out of the area when looking for bear.

I'll give it a shot, no particular plan. I went two years ago and actually saw one......the area I was hunting was open for bear but the opposite side of the road was not........guess where he was?

I got 3 or 4 guys coming up to hunt for a few days. It is nice to get out in the woods. In the last 2 early seasons I have seen 8 bears. All sows with cubs. Its still fun.

Friend of my says he's been seeing a couple of big ones on his property almost every evening.  He can see them from his back porch.  When I asked if he'd let me hunt, he said, "I'll check with the wife".  Seems she likes the bears and it's her decision.

We got our first ever bear on a trail camera this year. Hopefully it stays in the area for hunting season.

So I just picked up my big game and turkey tags at the local town hall.  Is there a special permit you need for early bear season, or does the basic big game license allow for that?  

 

Any restrictions on weapons used?

Will be hunting it this weekend coming up in 5H.  I have had numerous pics of bears on the cams.  Local ranger says he has had a lot of reports this year.

Went out yesterday evening but didn't see any.  I'll be hunting a couple of days this week.

Saw 4 bears yesterday.... Mother and 3 cubs

Get out and exercise early season with a chance of seeing a bear.... (I didn't have my reading glasses and the date on my trail camera is off one month)

Field dressed at only 120 lbs, town of lake Huntington 3H. Side story, as I'm gutting her, I hear foot steps coming towards me from the ridge line above me, it's another, much bigger bear, that comes to within 25 ft before he knows I'm there and lumbers off. My rifle was 8 ft behind me leaning against a tree. That was a pucker moment.
