Growie-

Listen to Mr. B !!! The brunch is sounding so much better all the time.....lol.

No, seriously.....I have never heard of a tomato pie. I can't imagine what could be done to tomatoes to make them taste good in a pie. But if you ever come across a recipe, be sure to post it. It would be interesting to see what it looks like.

There are a ton out there but the best is the one friends, and that's not being divulged. The Paula Deans looks good but rich...here are links to others to give an idea..so surprised few have heard of it.

I'm having brunch casserole, baked french toast with maple syrup ,ham and a beef roast,  broccoli salad, fruit salad, daughters bringing green beans and desserts. fresh rolls. and Mimosa's.

I went to an elite cooking school (first career), just my $.02, but there really are no "secret recipes" out there, most of this stuff is common knowledge, at least IMHO. Too bad I haven't tasted your friend's tomato pie, I'm pretty confident I'd be able to tell you what makes it different or better than anyone else's. Why not just take a shot at it, I'm sure it will be fine, and possibly tweak it and improve it next time you make it?

Savory ricotta pie with various cured Italian meats is really good.  But not very healthy!

My mother in law makes the best pizza rustica, shes making a few for easter dinner. Cant wait. My mother makes the best homemade Sicilian pie. Im spoiled....lol

For the best regular pizza"s  you need to venture into Brooklyn, the best there is. So many good pizzeria's to choose from.

I think we have a tendency to prefer foods we eat growing up.  I have yet to meet anyone that cooks better Italian food than my grandmother did, but I may be biased.  lol

For a small city, Utica may give Brooklyn a run for its money I bet and it ain't my hometown.

Ive eaten plenty of pizza in the NYC area, including Brooklyn, and to be honest, I never had any there that I would say is anything special, or better than some of the local pizza joints in Rochester.

Nicky the biggest thing is probably the fact I didn't have to cook it:wink:. Though I think as far as ingredients hers is closest to the 3rd link,Martha's,just in a pie pan. One reason she won't give it out is she always did the broccoli salad, for gatherings. One year she wasn't there so I made my version...then I was asked to bring it every gathering...I use a bit less sugar more shaved carrots, then cheese, home made flavored vinegar and cranberries with the wht. raisins ,far less dressing over all so the flavors popped and weren't drowned....It was apparently an issue so she refused to give any recipes out after that..

Grow, you need to ask Biz.  I think he's got some good pie recipes.   LOL

Depends on the variety of poontang pie you are interested in, Steve.

If your palate prefers fresh/ripe, I would suggest any SUNY school.

If your palate prefers aged like a fine wine or steak, I would suggest the bar area at any fine dining restaurant.

I cant compare because i never had pizza from Rochester, but there are a few places in Brooklyn that i consider very good for pizza.

I'll tell you who has the worst food. Lake George! I used to go up there all the time and can never find anywhere decent to eat. I can eat anything and even I can't do it up there. I'll never forget waiting 2 hours to eat at some Italian place that was packed with people having a good time. I got chicken Francese and it was definitely frozen chicken tenders heated up with 2 lemons on top. I lost it, walked out and drove to mcdonalds

it's definitely catered to take advantage of the tourist crowd that's walking in regardless.  not sure for italian food but there's some good places up there.  definitely in this area down to the capitol region we've got more franchised food places than anything.  unless you're cheap you're probably better off hitting up saratoga instead for italian food.

The internet is full of tomato pie recipes. The pictures all look completely different. Some of them use ripe tomatoes, some use green tomatoes. Some really do look like pizza other ones look like a regular piece of pie. Apparently tomato pies are not as rare as I thought. I never even heard of such a thing until you mentioned it. Every section of the country seems to have their own version. But I've got to say that the whole idea kind of squicks me out a little. But then I'm not a real big fan of tomatoes in anything.
