fasteddie
1) Does anyone remove the Tarsal Gland from a deer and use it as an attractant ? I have seen where hunters have taken the gland , frozen it and used it during hunting season . 2) Is it legal to remove tha gland from a roadkill deer ? WNYBuckHunter
I havent done it yet, but am going to try it this year. I dont see why it would be illegal to do, but you never know. Ill shoot an email to DEC and see what they say.
G-Man
I've used them for years,Will bring in buck and doe of all ages. Best if you get them from at least 2 miles from where you hunt. You can look as them as a deers calling card any deer in the area will come in downwind from them and try to find/see the new guy/gal! I've learned one thing not to put them out before legal shooting light as i've had deer come very quickly and i cant see to shoot! Seem to last 2-4 days as when exposed to warm air they start to rot.. i've removed them from road kill as well never even gave it a thought if it was illegal...i try to use them fresh, the seem to lose some potency when frozen and thawed....dont forget to swap them with sucessful hunters from other areas!! nyantler
I use to take the tarsal from every buck I killed and use it the following year... I haven't done it in a while.. I just always forget to cut it off the buck... its my favorite thing to use if I'm using something for scent
Doc
I would not be real surprised if we were to find out that it is illegal to remove tarsels from road killed deer without a permit for possession of the whole deer.
hb270deermanager
As far as it being illegal not really sure but thw law requires that you possess a carcus tag for a deer hit by a car.As for using a tarsal gland yes have done that and had mixed results.I can tell you that one season I used a tarsal gland from a buck that I processed for another hunter and it was amazing to see how other bucks reacted the gland I used came from a big mature buck. Most the bucks I saw were actually intimidated by it. WNYBuckHunter
I have an email in to one of the Reg 8 LTs about it, just waiting for him to get around to his email.
fasteddie
A classmate of mine took the head of a beautiful buck that was a roadkill to taxidermist . The DEC was on him like stink on sha-zit . He had to turn it over or face some serious charges . The Tarsal Glands would seem trivial but ....... you never know . ny hunter
I have a younger brother who is a cop,He said he was not sure if it was legal or not.He would not have a problem if he saw someone taking the glands. He has given deer to people who stop and ask all the time.He said he would just ask the person not to cut it up on the side of the road, might make somepeople up set. First-light
We did that last year and brought a buck right in! Will do it again this year for sure.
Culvercreek hunt club
I have taken glands off two of the bucks I have shot and hung them for my father at two other properties we hunt (hours away). I have no idea if it worked or if he would have seen the bucks he did anyway...but he shot one each time we did it..
Doc
I have an email in to one of the Reg 8 LTs about it, just waiting for him to get around to his email. So have you gotten a response back yet? it'll be interesting to see what the official DEC position is.
WNYBuckHunter
Not yet. Im sure he is pretty busy right now. Sometimes it takes a week or so for him to get back to me. Ill resend the email to the regular DEC info address as well.
WNYBuckHunter
I got a reply back from Lt Stoner today. Here it is..... "Hello John, by law the owner of the vehicle that hit the deer is entitled to the carcass. If they do want the deer it would be unlawful to take the tarsal gland without their permission. If the owner of the vehicle that his the deer does not want the carcass it would not be illegal for you to take just the tarsal glands. Lt. Tom Stoner"

Culvercreek hunt club
So the readers digest version is an abandoned deer on the side of the road....the tarsals are fair game.....for the younger folks out there....you might want to google readers digest ...lol
fasteddie
Thanks for the response . I would guess that most of the roadkill left would be "fair game" and possibly gamey ! There is enough of roadkill out there .

Buckstopshere
That is great news. Thanks for checking. I have been using tarsals for many years and have killed some nice bucks over them. But what I was worried about was the doe's saliva... Find a road-killed doe during the rut and swab out her mouth with cotton balls. Zip-tie them to the overhanging branch over a scrape. I can't believe how it brings in bucks!
Buckstopshere
That would be a lot easier! But I think the salivary glands in the deer are located around the mouth and not just in the tongue and they are the ones that carry the chemical messages at the licking branch...or overhanging branch over the scrape. Also, once it started to rot...sounds kind of nasty and I doubt effective.
Paula
I was able to get tarsal glands today. this might be a dumb question but when i do take them out out hunting i don't want to leave them or one do i?
arrow nocker
where are the tarsel glands? On the front legs?those black puffy things?if so what about the back ones too?
G-Man
just the rear leg glands inside the knee joint(the ones they pee on) ...dont leave them out take them out with you..and refigerate over night you'll only get 3-4 days before they start to rot.. i use one and freeze the other so when the 1st is spoiled i thaw out the new one.
