My brother sent me this and asked if I know the guy, since he's a Prof of Neurobiology at Univ of Utah who studies the link between memory and viruses. I don't, but I'm going to look him up now. He's got a great voice and nails all of the misinformation being spread currently. Have fun - and make sure that somebody calls me a liberal, sheep, or snowflake - just so I know that I'm doing my job lol.

PS. FYI, I'm a Republican moderate who thinks that Trump's policies would make more sense if he'd shut up, quit trying to rewrite history, and just admit when he made a damn mistake. In other words, I'm proponent of the truth, no matter how ugly. And apparently a cowgirl lol.

How dare you bring moderate reasoned science-based facts to this discussion AND throw a little shade at the chosen one.

You know, it's funny. I have these same conversations with my buddies who I hunt and fish with, and to them I'm way left. And when I preach moderation to my colleagues in academia, I'm way right. Which I suspect means that I'm right where I need to be. Proud to be a cowgirl, lol - that was great BTW.

Here, I’m a flaming libtard.
In NYC, I’m a curiosity to my friends but tolerable.
To my Hollywood family, I’m a fire-breathing Trump loving, white supremacist Nazi.

Really, I just want to be a 5’5” tapdancing, singing, one-eyed black Jew married to a Swedish babe.

Actually, this is based on one persons opinion, backed by not much. I’m familiar with nextstrain.org and they have actually changed the data since I found it some weeks ago.  It clearly showed a strain  from wuhan in LA area as well as Seattle area in January. NOT from Europe as the author incorrectly concluded. Same for nyc, at first the line was from wuhan area, followed by cases from Europe. This incorrect assumption from the author raises concern about the rest of the conclusions being erroneous as well.

Patient one and two in NYC came from Europe.  The Jewish lawyer via Miami International and the lady who came back from Iran.

Ah; but Science isn't static. As more genomes are sequenced, the unrooted phylogenetic map is refined. So yes, the data has changed. This is how models are built. Conclusions can shift with new data. But make no mistake: it is data driven. It is not opinion. And the data is there for anyone to analyze. And the strain definitely came from Wuhan; the missing arrows were fit into the model as more data emerged. It doesn't mean the original conclusion was wrong. Think about a delivery originating NYC and going to LA. That's all we know. Except we then find out that it went through Omaha on the way. So would it be incorrect to posit that Omaha and LA are closer together than NYC and LA? Of course not. And we can refine this as we put more points on the map. That's what they're doing, using genome data.

As an expert in the field, I do not see any underlying incorrect assumptions. Conclusions based on a limited data set need to be tempered. It's good to be skeptical. But leading off with "this is one person's opinion", when the nextstrain.org site clearly represents aggregate genome sequencing data obtained from multiple sources and analyzed using unbiased methods by multiple authors, suggests an attempt to discredit. I will use your own words -"backed not by much". Unless you meant to argue with the author of the NYT article, perhaps? Regardless, I would be pleased to consider a stronger argument if you can present one. Until then, I find myself unable to poke holes in their analysis.

No clearly it snowed in April because nobody is traveling which proves global warming is real.

And not all experts believe facemasks are helping, you are smart enough to know that, I think.

what experts are not? I'll wait.

And not all scientists or doctors agree with you. Just the ones on CNN, MSNBC,  ect.

Some experts believe face coverings will increase your likelihood of being exposed.  Go sit on a bench with your mask on, of course and watch people fidgeting with them, then if you see the opposite then you can say I am wrong.

The only time I will be wearing one is while working at my job. I choose to wear it as a condition of employment,  not because I am fearful of the virus but because I like working.

also the ones on Fox, including Trump and his teams are recommending them. Is Alex Jones your source?

An officer stopped at our job site today. We are working in a high profile area along a major road. He told us that masks need to be worn. Someone must’ve called in a complaint. The officer was NOT wearing one. Needless to say, he didn’t stay long and we continued on with our day.

he would be incorrect unless you were in public. The private workforce is exempt, so long as that workforce is essential.

Honestly I only mentioned the boat ramp thing to show that the "rules" they are coming up with are complete BS.

no, what you're doing is pointing to 1 of the bad decisions made during this and then lumping up everything else into it as also bad. Out of the dozen or so ordinances put in place, a few have been bad. That doesn't mean the rest are as well. Isn't this the same motto gun owners live by? Don't punish me for the actions of a few idiots?

We are we on town property. I believe this town also passed an ordinance as well requiring masks be worn in public. Screw that. The only time I put my mask on is when I go in the deli for lunch.

i have n95's but wore my camo turkey facemask (3/4) to get some essentials (wine) on Friday. I also had my cc with me. There's something odd about walking into a liquor store with a mask and gun...

I’m isolated in a crane all day. I’ll take the chance. The local pd watches us all day long without saying a word. The only reason they did last week was because of a complaint. Even the pd are not wearing masks.

Yup. Three Mile Harbor. Since it’s a municipal job, everyone has been looking the other way and leaving us alone. I do know that many complaints against us have been called in because we’ve been working. I can’t wait for all these people to go back to the city. Labor Day can’t come soon enough.

I wear my compliant mask because:I do not want to deal with some over zealous police officer or some psychotic worry wart thinking I might infect them or getting kicked out of a store due to violating their "you must wear a mask" sign at the entrance door.  Who needs the Bravo Sierra of arrest, fine or physical altercation?

What I'd like to know is how in the world did this guy get chosen as the Surgeon General of the United States?  He was apparently head of Pence's health department in Indiana, but I don't know if I'd trust him to put a bandaid on a cut.  Many claim that Trump drained the swamp, but he sure as hell scraped the bottom of the barrel with some of his choices for key government positions.
