My guess would be to have more bucks to kill... that's all that I can see that would happen... for a little while until all the deer began starving to death.

Killing bucks doesn't manage the deer herd that much does it?

The "big buck" guys should find a 4.5 year old doe and try and hunt her. They're significantly more difficult to hunt than bucks.

But that's not going on the wall, is it?

and its not what we're seiing on TV

Most wanting more bucks to hunt aren't looking for mature deer.

They want it to be way easier to kill 2.5 and 3.5's.

Which is usually a reflection on their ability to kill the bucks that we already have... be kind of like lowering the rim so 5' people can dunk a basketball :)

I am sick of being compared to other states, most have significantly few hunters and deer populations, less public land, and way less hunters per square mile. There are big deer taken every year in ny. A lot are never put in books. The biggest problem I see in NY is law enforcement, people filling wives/father/grandfathers tags. Beyond that 2 bucks isn't a problem, how many legally shoot 2 buck a year? Aa small percentage for sure. You can't stockpile big bucks on a property they don't put up with each other...

article is skewed by hunter density per sq mile, and mature deer harvested, nothing in there about huntersatisfaction, public private land access . And they don't like snow and cold weather for hunting, I don't know too many hunters in ny that don't wish for cold and snow. That article is like statistics can be manipulated to give anything you want to show. Don't want a little buck don't shoot one.no excuses of someone else will. You control what you shoot unless you hunt in a AR area....

Disclaimer: There is no single category that makes a state “bad” or “good” in regards to whitetail hunting, nor does every hunter in a given state share a similar experience. The data used below was compiled from the Quality Deer Management Association’s 2013 Whitetail Report.

This pretty much explains everything... and I think I was right about your plan being a bit self serving

You overly dramatic snip its(all the deer will starve)  and accusations( being self serving) show little wit and even less class. Enjoy your spiral of decline  that is NY deer hunting.

Stop the trophy hunting and change bow season to 2 weeks doe only then you would see the deer population come back and level out.

Are deer populations too low now? Please explain how 2 weeks of hunting only doe with bow would significantly "level out" the deer population. Start by explaining exactly where the populations are now then show how your idea fixes things... please use population numbers for each DMU, then overall State numbers so I can understand where we are at this point and what is driving the low populations, then  go through how your idea will affect each area of NY to make that areas population better... please include the projected amount of deer of each sex that will be affected, along with how extreme weather patterns might affect those two weeks of hunting. Lastly, what is your idea for stopping trophy hunting... What would be the criteria determining a trophy buck? Would this be a challenge for the hunters that believe every buck is a trophy? This whole idea is very interesting... I'd like to hear more.

That's just it... I am enjoying my NY deer hunting, no complaints here...you haven't said anything about what exactly the downward spiral is... and how your idea is going to fix it. Attacking my wit and class still doesn't explain how your plan would work ... pointing out an article written about an opinion of deer hunting States by a particular group with a particular idea of how deer hunting should be (be it good or bad) is not an explanation of how exactly your idea makes NY hunting better... please enlighten us. Please try to use the personal wit that helped you come up with the idea, and what determines your downward spiral.

Also looking forward to see his detailed plan (which I am sure he has).

Please - not just what to do, but explain how it will "fix" it throughout the state.

Thanks in advance.

The southern zone and the northern zone really are two different climates and habitat, and do require different management considerations. I wonder if those considerations really are accounted for in the differences in management strategies. The one that really makes me wonder is the fact that in the south back-tags are required but not in the north. Now what kind of climate considerations conjured up that difference? ..... lol. How many other differences are equally arbitrary?

Bag limits are no different in the NZ from the SZ. The only thing different are the seasons. If you hunt in a DMP that give you two doe tags, you can still kill a total of 5 deer. If it really had to do with numbers, they would allow less deer to be taken in the NZ. So, while they are different, the state is not actually compensating for the differences.

Well, that just highlights the fact that here in NYS, game management is a political activity.

seeing there are less deer in the NZ, why then, is the over all deer season longer in the NZ than in the SZ? in the days of the "party permit", the permit was good for deer of either sex. I killed 2 bucks one time out of six or eight permits. I think is was in the mid 90's that NYDEC came up with the WMUs to micro-manage the deer herd. back in the day, the NZ/SZ line meant rifles north, shotguns south. at least as far as I was concerned. I put 2 bucks and 3 does in the freezer this year, all taken on state land. I have taken over 100 deer, about half are bucks. I got antlers all over the place. I do not hunt for bucks only. I hunt for legal deer. I want meat in the freezer (and so does my wife). 1 buck, 2 buck, I don't care that much. just the meat.      this is just me.

bag limits are no different?    a lot of the areas here have no dmp and those that do require preference points to get one.  Most of the guys I hunt with get a dmp every 4 or 5 years.  I do not get two for my region pl,us draw 2 more when november 1 comes around.  bag limits are no way the same

I understand what you are saying, like I said, "if" you live in an area that you can get two DMPs, you can shoot 5 deer. In my area, you are only going to get one DMP, so I can only shoot 4. The DEC "controls" the number of deer taken in the area with DMPs, that is no different in either zone. Also, if they are giving you in the NZ a longer season so you can shoot a deer, then why not in the SZ. I know a lot of people who do not shoot deer every season down here, and they are not "Trophy Hunters". I feel the only reason we have two separate seasons is so people can hunt both areas. I think it has nothing to do with management considerations.

you can ONLY shoot 4 deer? you should show a little more excitement with having the opportunity to do so.
