  6. I have been reading for a long time and finally decided to sign on. I am from Oneonta and have been an outdoorsman as long as I can remember. I grew up in a hunting family, and consider myself very lucky that I had a father that passed on his love of hunting and the outdoors in general. I mostly just hunt for deer now because of work and family commitments. I absolutely love bowhunting and I do still gun hunt because of the the comraderie with friends. I also enjoy camping and do quite a bit of walleye fishing in the spring and early summer. I am not on here to argue or be a know-it-all. I have quite a bit of knowledge and like all others, i have an opinion. I will not post just to contradict someone, but sometimes i will write my personal opinion in a respectful way.

  8. Last year I had a buck come right under my stand where I had pee'd earlier. This week I had a coyote at 2 yds from the base of my ladder stand where I had pee'd. So, go in a bottle if you like, not me! LOL

  10. Always pee from my stand...Quick story...On opening day a few years back, had a guy beat me into my stand. Asked him what he was doing and said he thought knowone was using it. Asked him (told him nicely) to get out and he was really mad. Watched him leave as the sun started to come up. Stopped 25 yards from me and started to piss all over the place. An hour later heard shots and two does were just ripping through the woods. Hit the pee spot and slammed on the breaks, I dropped her right there. I never got to thank him. LOL

  13. Wow, quite a contraption you have there! You did get some good footage, but honestly I will never understand the need people have these days to videotape themselves doing just about everything? I guess it's the Youtube era we are living in and it's here to stay. I for one will continue to concentrate on the hunting part, and then if I remember, I will have someone snap a picture of me with the dead animal once it's down. I am OLD school I reckon, but that's OK. I have fewer contraptions to lug out into the woods with me. LOL

  14. Chefhunt, DEP uses fireworks to scare away certain birds to prevent them form nesting permanently in Kensico. They fire them off from boats. Btw, same results here. "Not a soul is stirring. Not even a mouse."

  22. Previous Thunderhead shooter here. I did the mechanical run but went back to the fixed. A friend that does a lot of traveling for North American species made a suggestion to me and I am very glad he did. I wanted a cut on contact that was tough and he uses the Montec G5. great quality and amazingly strong. very easy to sharpen on any quality flat stone. If you are going back to fixed blade I would suggest them.

  23. Yes they would have recognized it as unusable.. as for CWD... there has only been two known cases ever in NY and both were captive deer.. so I doubt highly that it has CWD...

  27. AaronBlaine..I liked the club, I'm just not all that social.. but there were some nice guys and I hope you meet guys to hunt with there...Ask them about the small book "Ducks at a Distance"...I don't think you can get it anymore, but maybe they'll know...( It's on the internet too.. but I used to bring the book, in case I saw some in the area and wasn't sure...).. so check if it's gonna be there again this year.. The festival is on the South Shore, "usually" off Ocean Pkwy east of Jones beach at Cedar (The bay side) It's past Tobay and Gilgo).. I'm not sure where it is this year it was a dollar or two to get in.. so check...I've gone a number of times,. They even shoot over the water ( it costs a little , but not sure how much).. they have duck boats (they get judged somehow I think).. Vendors (decoys, calls, books other stuff), a raffle, and I have seen local law enforcement there.. so maybe you'll get some questions answered while you're there.. Don't know if your interested in the festival, but figured I'd just let you know. I CAN help you.. spots( walk in spots too)...etc. I think it's better if we do it by email thru this site...Then you can ask away and if I have an answer I'll forward it to you... Spots..... permits....some town ordinances.. I'll even fill you in on small game spots , if you need to know that too. I was out today chasing bluefish in my kayak and saw my first migrating duck of the year... This is the time the ducks start coming....The brant also very soon...I used to practice calling this time of year in non hunting spots ( I guess you know that there is NO waterfowl hunting allowed in any waters in Huntington) I gotta caution you before you email me.. I'm an old guy and I can be pretty wordy, but I'll try to keep it short.. you gotta let me know if I get too much....I won't be insulted.. Also, I'm not on the computer everyday, so if it takes me a day , or so to get back to you that's the reason why. So think of some questions and fire away ! Remember , I;'m not an expert, but have some experience and knowledge.of waterfowling and have small game hunted on L.I. since the 60's

  29. i didnt read your whole post, just the first part. i was amazed at the times you were entering the woods!!! 730 am and 530 pm are the prime time for deer to move. you stomping through the woods at that time is crazy. i dont know wht obligations you have in life but if you can only hunt am or pm, you should choose and get in before the "golden hour" if you hunt the morning you should be in stand by 530 if you hunt the afternoon you should be in by 4

  30. Live from my desk: balmy 72 degrees, still fairly dark out as they don't turn on the lights until 8ish, so I use my office lights. Seen plenty of does walk by, but they are all missing two legs and got the pass. I'm not going to get crap done this a.m. I'll make a few phone calls to schedule some meetings, etc., but that is it.

  31. A man, Bob, and his friend Joe went out hunting. This was Joe's first time ever hunting, so he was following Bob's lead. Bob saw a small herd of deer and told Joe to stay in the exact spot he was and to be quiet. After a few minutes, Bob heard a loud scream. He ran back and asked Joe what had happened. Joe said “There was this snake and he slittered across my feet, but I never screamed. Then there was this bear that came up to me and snarled, but I never screamed.” “So then what did make you scream,” Bob asked, exasperated. “Well,” Joe continued, “two squirells crawled up my pants and I overheard them say, ‘Should we take them home or eat 'em now?’

  33. No. I do suppose that if someone did get a bear that they would be still processing and recovering from a long weekend of difficult work. Definately not for a week person or lone person.
