It was an awesome opening morning sit, although very short. As soon as I climbed into my stand I had deer in the 50 acre field I was overlooking. I had hardwoods behind me with a standing cornfield on the other side. The leaves in the woods were perfect to alert me of any movement with a nice frost from cold weather. After watching deer move around field right at first light I heard the "crunching" of leaves and this fella came out of the woods 50 yds to my right. Gave me a great opportunity to make a clean shot and I was able to make the most of it. He is not a giant but my second buck ever taken and first since 2007, rough score of 115. My biggest to date.10 points

I took my 16 year old nephew to Letchworth Park today. He got his first deer about 10 minutes after legal shooting time started with his grandfather's very old J.C. Higgins smooth bore 12 gauge pump.He missed the first shot but hit him on the second, the deer went about 200 yards with no blood trail.I am so happy we found him! Picture is from a phone. It was a 6 point buck.8 points

Got this button head around 3:30pm. I wasn't paying attention just looking down and my gun. The squirrels were running all around me and when I looked up, it wasn't squirrels making noise it was this guy walking right to me. I thought it was a doe until I walked up to it. I shot him the exact same spot that I got my deer in bow season a couple weeks ago. Meat for the freezer! Still got some big boys out there hopefully.5 points

Right Doc ------ Sunrise today in NYC was 6:47 and 7:13 in Fredonia . A difference of 22 minutes across the state . The law is the law . Why not just abide by it instead of wanting something changed to serve some selfish desires !1 point

Did you guys ever notice how much the sunrise and sunset times change as you go across the state. It's unbelievable how much of a difference there is from Buffalo to NYC. I had no idea. One thing I did take note of was what I could see 1/2 hour before sunset (or more specifically what I couldn't see). Yes, I could have easily shot with that limited light, as long as I wasn't looking for any detail on the deer. But then, it was a crystal clear day. I'm certain that 1/2 hour before sunrise on a cloudy day would have been way too dark for safe target ID, and a good look at what was in the background especially if there are guys running around without blaze orange. There have been other years when there was a bit of fog mixed in with heavy clouds that would have made a 1/2 hour before sunrise absolutely ridiculous. I think the state got it 100% correct with the sunrise starting time and the sunset finish.1 point

I have been wanting to make jerky for about 6 years but refused to do it with out the recipe my father used when i was a kid. Every time I asked him for the recipe he would get frustrated and tell me he lost the recipe at some point and searched the internet and couldn't find that specific recipe because he wanted to make jerky also. I went to show my uncle the buck I got the other day and the jerky topic came up. He started dating a woman about a year ago that he dated for a few years when I was a kid. When he got his deer this year he wanted to make jerky and she pulled out the recipe my father had given them 20 some years ago. he was surprised she had kept it all of those years. he copied it down for me and my father couldn't believe it when I showed it to him. it is a simple easy recipe that tastes great 4 lbs venison cut 1/8 -1/4 inch thick 1 1/3 TBLS salt 1 tsp pepper 2 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp worcestershire sauce 12 drops tabasco sauce 1/4 tsp thyme Add just enough water to cover meat. let the meat marinate for 24 hours. place oven on warm. stretch meat over racks. place in oven on warm for 4-10 hrs. I have 8 lbs marinating as I type this I can't wait till it is done.1 point

Shooting hours should be set for the worst conditions - not the best and they need to be hard numbers not left to judgement. On an overcast day in the woods, the current times are good. Does anyone need a deer that badly they need to push the envelope?1 point

One doe down. Wasn't any fun cleaning her in the dark (my son took my flashlight out of my pack) but she's clean and out of the woods. Hope to run into her old man in the AM. Saw 12 deer today and a busy fox, on and off, trough out the day. Just walk out side with the spotlight in hand and wouldn't you know it, 11 of them on the side yard. Wish I saw them in clusters like that in the woods.1 point

She came out with her girlfriend about 7:15. They walked around for about 1/2 hr. I was waiting to see if their boyfriend would come out but he didn't so after she presented a broadside shot at about 100 yds. I put the crosshairs on her and squeezed the trigger. She ran maybe 20 yds and dropped. The picture shows the exit hole. This afternoon im going for the boyfriend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Why not just make hunting hours dawn plus an hour then 1 hour before dusk until dark... or better yet lets just skip the daylight hours and just hunt at night so we can catch the deer when they're moving around? Plus wouldn't it be much easier to do away with the guns and just use explosives... then we could just bomb the woods and go pick up deer after the explosion... anything to make it easier. Makes no sense to have to beat the deer at their own game by trying to outsmart them. I think all these rules and regulations are just put in place to make us actually have to hunt deer instead of just be able to shoot on when ever we want... stupid laws!!1 point

Them armored dildos are challenging critters... A few years ago while I was hog hunting down in Georgia, one came ambling past and I decided to try and catch it. In my misspent youth, I caught many a possum by running after it and grabbing it by the tail. What's an armored dildo ? Nothing but a possum on the half shell. I put down my rifle and took off after it. I quickly learned that an armored dildo can run MUCH faster than a middle aged, slightly overweight, stubby legged Pygmy. It's a wonder I didn't have a heart attack. I decided if I wanted to bring one to hand, it's easier just to shoot it.1 point
