8:45 am this morn i got down from my stand and walked to meet up w my hunting buddy, long story short we were just getting ready to start a mini drive when this guy stepped out about 50 yrds away i wispered "stand still!" and brought my gun up i shot and he dropped right over.... needless to say i was and still am SUPER exited! he would be a six point (i think) but he broke his main beam so he is a 4 or 5 im not sure if the main beam is big enough to count.... i am guessing his weight at about 175 and his age at 1.5 yr approx (i shot him with a hornady 150 gr super shock tip bullet in 308 win)4 points

because he wasn't fishing. You don't have kids?i used to take my little ones fishing and never even get to cast out my own pole. And due to that reason i never bought a fishing lisense in NY untill i started ice fishing. Before then i would not even take my pole.I spent my whole time tying and untying knots and casting out poles for them cause they had problems with the release button. It would be wrong to get ticketed for letting my kids fish.If i was in a boat casting out my own bait then yes i would expect i was doing wrong.3 points

Well I spent all bow season stalking this huge 8 point I saw. I only had 3 incounters with him. Had a broadside shot at 45 yards. I'm comfortable enough to take that shot so I let him walk. Hardest decision I have ever made in the field. Opening mornig of southern tier gun I was sitting in my monsy stand. No action at all until 7:42. I had a sweet buck walk in at 25 yards. I couldn't get him to stop so instead of taking that shot I waited. He finally gave me an 82 yard shot. My .270 did some work on him. Biggest buck to date for me. It isn't the one I was stalking but I sure am happy with it.2 points

Put a new ladder stand together today, put it up overlooking golden rod fields and with total view of farmers corn fields next doors. Have been sitting in the blowing wind and snow for two hours so far. The magic hour approaches as my hands are mixed numbness and sharp prickly pain. My eyes are tearing non stop, nose running like crazy and my mind starts to wander. Ah a day in the life of a deer hunter. Lol! C'mon deer!2 points

Next time I go by it, I will take a picture of my crushed ground stand where a tree (about 24" in diameter) mangled the whole thing. Thankfully, I was not in it. But hunting from the ground offers up no guarantees that you can't still get squashed. Lesson learned .... Even in ground blinds, or even just still hunting, be aware of the condition of trees that you are near (especially on windy days).2 points

Got this doe 5 minutes after legal shooting light on Thanksgiving. She and 6 other does were pushed out of another thicket into the spot I was. They all stopped at 80 yds and looked around and I picked the biggest one and pulled the trigger. 30 yds blood trail and there she was.2 points

I shot mine from a blind this year. It was my first year using a blind, I borrowed it from my uncle. There wasn't any echo same as shooting it resting against a tree or from a stand. I know it is not recommended to shoot through the screens with a gun. That being said I didn't find that the screens blocked out that much wind or rain. In the blind I was using I unzipped the main window about half way and the side windows I only unzipped about 1/4 of the way just enough to see out. I found that to block the wind and rain sufficiently and still gave me a large field of view. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.2 points

Took my first deer with a 357 magnum yesterday. 30 yds broadside through the lungs and the 158 gr jacketed hollow core passed through.2 points

Yeah, I know my memory is on it's way out, but am I the only one who remembers a video posted here that showed a sequence of pictures (taken from a video I assume) that depicted a rather large, healthy looking buck being taken down and killed by some coyotes? I have no idea how to locate it, but I'm very sure I saw it here somewhere. Anybody else remember that thread and the pictures? I can't even remember how many coyotes were involved, but it certainly answered the question of whether healthy adult deer can be killed by coyotes.1 point

Back in October I posted a couple picture's of a family friend's Adirondack ML 8 point. Last night he sent me another picture of his latest kill- a massive 145ish 10pt. I assume he tracked this one as that is his favorite way to get them. 1st pic is the ML 8 pt and the 2nd is the 10. I'm headed up tomorrow night with bid hoof prints in my eyes!1 point

After a brutal morning sitting in the wind and snow yesterday, I went with a small group to do some drives to fill a few doe tags. We went to the Brookfield statelands, and only saw two older gentlemen trying to fill their doe tags. We set them right up in a couple of traditional escape routes, and they both got nice does to complete their seasons. You would have thought we gave them a million dollars they were so happy about us letting them sit on our drive. The group I went with filled all four doe tags they needed filled for that unit, and even shot a bonus eight point buck. Although I am not much of a drive hunter, I don't mind helping guys out late in the season, or on days when the weather is so nasty. I always walk because I like to see people bag their deer, and truthfully, I don't care if I shoot any with a gun or not. Number of hunters continues to drop in this area. After the first day, the roadside parking is almost non-existant. Mostly groups of hunters just pushing the woods day after day. I just think that people have put deer hunting a lot farthur down their list of priorites, or have just quit because they are too afraid to find new places to hunt after their farm they hunted forever gets sold.1 point

Nice, very nice. What I like best is the fact you didn't take a shot just for the sake of shooting at something. Your patience paid off, and you got your kill shot. Excellent story, and nice buck. Really nice.1 point

I have not noticed any difference in sound...I've turkey hunted from both a dog house blind and a chair blind...now if your hunting out of a wooden blind at any time...yeppers there is a difference...with out ear protection ...it can give you a "ringing"....I also just zip the solid window down just enough to see and shoot...I've had deer stick their heads in the blind with me during turkey season...they won't notice you if your not moving much...Good Luck.... If you are worried about it, push the muzzle up against the screen material enough so that it pushes past the outside wall of the blind. That will put the muzzle blast outside of the blind.1 point

The choke designation is usually stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the reciever. It may say full, mod, or imp cyl. Most Sears pump guns were manufactured by High Standard. Nothing fancy, but a good solid, servicable shotgun. No problem shooting foster style rifled slugs. It would probably be a good idea to avoid shooting steel shot in it. In older guns that were not designed for steel shot, it could cause damage to your barrel, such as bulging or scoring of the bore.1 point

I'd much rather have a fox problem than a coyote problem.. Our vet lives less than 2 miles from me. Her dog (not sure of the breed, medium size, cocker-spaniel-ish) got taken out of her back yard, 15-yards from her back door while she was in the shower last spring. She said that she heard what was going on, looked out the window and saw 3-yotes tearing her dog apart. Nothing she could do obviously. I know that they are only doing what they're supposed to do, but I find them to be mangy, disgusting, vile creatures. I coyote hunt when i get the chance, and would never hesitate to dispatch one at any time. Would especially love to get one of those big black Alpha males running around this hillside.. In my opinion, the coyote should be classified as a pest, or unprotected. Theres at least 2-3 packs near my house almost every night. I don't think we have a shortage of them. Not to mention, their only real predator is man, and the few trappers we have I doubt will even put a dent in their population.1 point

I'm only on my 3rd season, but numbers seem to be lower on 8G state and federal land. Yesterday was very quiet in particular. I think it's a self-perpetuating problem. Guys see less deer when fewer hunters are moving them, so fewer hunters want to come out because they're seeing less deer. Makes sense I guess. How do we fix it ???1 point

Is that the best you have to offer? Run back to your mom? Or is it because you realize you're supporting a tyrannical enforcement which is outside the spirit of the law, so you are changing the topic. Four year olds are not actually dexterous enough to cast out a pole. They REQUIRE adult help for this. Saying an adult putting a line in the water and handing a pole to a 4 year old equates to the adult fishing is like saying that a person holding a beaker is a chemist. They are simply not correct assessments. But people like you gladly watch as a man is ticketed for something YOU AS A SPORTSMAN should be glad to see, him introducing another generation to the outdoors. But you're so high and mighty because "DA LAW IS DA LAW" herp derp. So you go ahead, you be glad some ******** gave a guy trying to show kids how to fish a ticket. I'll be disgusted, and you'll still be a *****.1 point

Congrats Joe, but he ain't 175 by a long shot 130 maybe... anyway, enjoy the meat, you will remember that forever !!! :-)1 point

Man, stop tripping, he went with poles and kids to the water, that's fishing...period.... and I do have a kid and I'm telling him get a license before you grab those poles and a cooler before you hit the road...don't get hung up on the kids factor here, you are going to the shore/boat with poles and nets, that's fishing bro whether you catch anything or not.....1 point

OK here we go, I will be brief.... the forecast said it will be a shitty day and I said #%@$# that I will hunt anyway.....It was nice and frosty morning and I spooked a turkey and a coyote on the way in..... first stand nothing, second stand nothing, short third nothing and I'm starting to lose hope. Then I go for a walk (as my bud coach recommends) and at the end of it I see big antlers...quick action point and click....I'm not really sure if I got him since it was like 1 second....bang I go. The buck goes 20 yards and stops, I send the re-fresher this time I know I got him....I chill and wait, give him some time to expire. Then I close on him and this boy is big and I mean 180 lbs big. This is my best trophy ever he will hang on my wall proudly..... This is my first opening day buck and I'm sooooo happy I have no words to describe it...I think I need a drink.. :-)1 point

Am I missing something here? It's good to hear somebody have as much deer action as you have had, but am I reading this wrong? You "shot a nice seven pt in the morning", but are still out there to let a "big spike", "walk", in the same day. What choice did you have than to let him walk if you already filled your buck tag? And, now you're "going back tomorrow"? Are you able to take more than one buck during gun season in your area?1 point

there is a few state land areas along 365 and rte 49 corridors in rome and in marcy. can read up on those sites on dec website. they stock them with game birds. theres always brookfield and tassle hill in waterville 30mins away. might want to wear as much orange as humanly possible in those areas but they produce some good deer, or you can go north along rte 12 to state land. just saw a pic of a darn nice buck that got hit by a truck that died at a friends parking area to some land he hunts that is probably pushing 140 inches right in new hartford. they are out there, few and far between but they are there.1 point

depends on the tree as well. hemlock, locust, poplar, cherry, maple, ash....... no matter how big, and how whatever, they still break in the wind. See it every day. safer on the ground. not every tree will fall, but you never know if the one you are in will fall.1 point

Most of the hair can be singed off with a propane torch. Congealed blood on the surface can be scraped off with a knife or washed off with a wet cloth and cold water, but if the blood clots are running through the muscle tissue, the bloodshot meat should be trimmed away and discarded. It will not keep well and it will have a strong taste.1 point

it sounds to me like he doesnt know its your land.. if i was trespassing someones land the last thing i would do would be walk passed them and wave.. id approach him nicely and see whats up1 point

I've had my CCW over 12 years now. I carry every single day, hunting or not. No exceptions. The one time you leave it home and need it, defeats the purpose of its existence in its entirety.1 point

Well here is my addition, Headed out to the stand with my cousin knowing that this buck was in the immediate area and with the intention of only shooting him as we had an encounter with him two days ago but with no shot. We were hoping to get the hunt on video but things happened to fast, we were sitting in stand on a small patch of woods just off a field and had not seen a deer all morning and knew he was on a doe the night before so may of been bedded down and hanging tight. Just about 8am i head some leaves crunching right in front of us and all i saw was a huge deer with a huge rack trotting trough the woods about 70 yards away and he was on a mission. I wispered to my cousin huge buck huge buck as i put the scope on him. He then stopped and looked towards us and right before my cousin was about to say just shoot him because the camera wasnt on or even towards him i fired and he kicked and tore off. We were both so pumped standing in our stands and were about positive i put a solid shot on him we were shaking in the stand. This was by far the biggest buck either of us had seen in the woods. We got down and found where i hit him and had really good blood and found him piled up about 60 yards away. He grossed 144 1/2" with a 20 3/4" inside spread.1 point

Shot this buck tonight, he is my best to date. Hes not the biggest Ive seen this season, but I am more than tickled with him. Cantrell taxidermy will be mounting him for me. Heres the story... Yesterday, I hunted a farm that I hadnt set foot on this season. My buddy suggested that I go sit in a stand that he had set this year, so thats where I went. On my way in, I kicked up a nice buck, but didnt get a good look at him. I set up in the stand and got down at 4:15, as I had to be home by 5:30. As I was walking out, down a tractor road up on a hill overlooking a cow pasture, I saw 15 doe come out from a thick swatch of brush and head out into the back part of the pasture. I had no time to mess with them, but ranged the spot where they were at 186 yards. Fast forward to this afternoon. My buddy and I set up a new ground blind on another part of the farm, and the idea was I was going to sit it this afternoon. When we returned to the farm a bit later, I noticed a guy in his ladder stand about 140 yards across the field. Damn, couldnt sit there, so I headed toward the stand I sat in yesterday. When we got to the spot where I saw the does, I showed him what I had seen and we discussed what the plan for today was. He was going to another ground blind, just down the hill from where we were and I decided I would stay there and see if I couldnt get lucky and catch the does heading into the back pasture again. I wasnt sure if it would work, as I was pretty exposed, but I thought maybe the distance was going to help me out. I was texting with my buddy asking if we had seen anything, and we both said no. As I put my phone away I spotted a doe coming into the pasture. I got low and moved up to the fence post that I could use as a rest. The doe moved into a swail in the pasture and I was waiting for her to emerge when I saw a rack come out from the brush to the left, right where I had ranged the does at 186. I switched my attention to him and as he put his head down to feed, I held just over his back right above the shoulders and slowly squeezed the trigger. POP! Are you kidding me! Misfire! The powder had gotten damp from loading up the previous day, then having 20 degree temps this morning and 50s in the afternoon. The buck looked over at the noise, then put his head back down. I got low and went back to my backpack, yanked the breech plug and pushed the load out. I threw everything out of my pack to get what i needed and reloaded, got back up to the post and slowly stood up. The buck was gone. My buddy called and asked what that pop was, so I told him, and as we were talking, the buck headed up out of the swail, i threw my phone, pulled up and grunted at him. I set my crosshairs in the same spot as he stood there slightly quartering to and let him have it. Boom! Through the smoke I saw the hit take him off of his feet. He got back up and headed into the brush. I picked my phone up and told him what happened, and he headed up to me. We went out and found blood, but thought we would give him time. I decided to range the shot, 180 yards on the dot from the post I rested on to my buddy standing where the deer was. We gave it an hour and followed a 50 yard blood trail to the other side of the brush right to my buck! Hes a solid 2 1/2 year old, with a very symmetrical rack. I couldnt be happier! What a vacation so far, a great doe yesterday morning and this guy tonight! Gonna take Thanksgiving off and get back after it Friday.1 point
