  1. I got a chance to finish up my 2014 turkey fan and wing display today! As you all probably know by now, I like my stuff looking a little rough and rustic instead of that fine finished look, so I decided to tear apart an old twisted stump for my plaque wood. The entire process went surprisingly smooth except for one accidental spill while the Borax was still drying things out. Had to make an emergency run for more but the best I could come up with was Boric Acid powder...... close enough, lol! Anyhow, here's what I came up with. The pot call and striker had nothing to do with killing this gobbler. I wasn't real happy with that call so I'm glad I found a use for it so I have an excuse to get a new one next spring!

  2. Makes no sense that half the state has to wear back tags and the other half doesn't... I can't think of a good reason why wearing a back tag in the southern zone is any different than wearing it in the north. I always have it, but never wear it. For some reason though I have a gazillion of those pin on tag holders in camo and blaze orange... not sure why I have them or why I keep them.

  3. Thanks for all the input! I recently purchased the Ruger American in the 30-06, I love it, I have been shooting at the range lately and truly enjoy shooting it! I am looking forward to the fall!

  4. It is anticipated that Charles Alsheimer will do a presentation at Eden High School - Eden, NY later this year (09/14). Come listen and form your own opinion. Regardless of your point of view, his presentation should put all in the mood for 2014 archery season.

  7. This should all be a non-issue for anyone NOT voting for Cuomo... even if I liked her I wouldn't vote for him... so it matters little to me... as for the original post... the NRA gave her a score based on her track record which has been great in past years... she has been very pro gun.

  10. Dang! When I read it's coming to Woodbury, my first thought was - on LonGiland?? There's no room there. Then I came back to earth and realized it was upstate near the Commons... Lol!

  12. Well the job is mine if I want to accept it. They are gracious enough to fly me and my wife up there to visit for four days. We fly to Soldotna, Alaska on the 19th of this month. I'm excited to see it first hand. My biggest concern at the moment about moving up there is housing. The doctor I interviewed with really got excited when he found out I am a hunter. It just so happens, so is he! Lets see how the all plays out. I maybe I'm not just going just for the "halibut"...lol!

  13. Hiking into my turkey blind this morning when I bumped a deer. That's been happening every morning lately, so nothing unusual there. A little further along I spotted a little dot in my headlight beam reflecting back at me so I went to check it out and here's what I found! I was getting a little carried away with pictures flashing in his face and forgot that I needed to pay attention to where momma was before she put the boots to me,lol. I forced myself to leave him after a few shots so mom could get back to him and went on to another exciting turkey hunt! I let him get a good whiff of me so he remembers who I am in a few weeks when he's moving around on his own.

  15. Came across a few while mowing hay. One in particular, I remember very well as the top of his shell was shaved flat as a table. He was good size, maybe 18" across. Often wondered how he got that way. Should of, would of, could of taken pics.

  18. I have eaten turtle meat, and found that I obviously know nothing about cooking it. We decided that it probably would be tough, so thought the best way to go about it would be to grind it up into burger. If you took a handful of thick rubber-bands and chopped them up, you would have the consistency of our turtle burgers. Obviously that wasn't the right approach. One thing that I heard works good is to make turtle soup. I don't know, I did my thing and I guess I have had enough of experimenting with eating turtles .... lol. One thing that people should be aware of is just how long that neck is, and how far away they can reach, and how fast they can reach out and touch someone. They do deserve a healthy respect, because if they get ahold of you, they can do some ugly damage.

  19. I have only ever come across one snapping turtle . It was in a field where I was shooting woodchucks . I picked up a stick and stuck it in front of the turtle . The turtle grabbed the stick in it's mouth and snapped it . I got the hell away from it . Then I realized the farmer had a pond about 100 yards away . I worked for a black manager one time and he used to catch them and eat them .

  24. Look into the current GPS studies. They put GPS collars on different deer, and they know where they are every X number of minutes. Shows you exactly what they are doing 24/7. Those studies are showing that the moon has little to nothing to do with movement patterns. The studies have been done in the North and the South, with the same results.

  25. I know a lot of people including myself who use the moon phase and feeding times quite successfully. But a study is better than actual input I understand

  26. That magazine just cant give up their moon theories, even when the GPS studies are showing that the moon doesnt have much to do with it. Nah, never mind that, heres some old studies to "back it up", we need to sell more moon phase calendars. hahaha
