  2. I'll be honest one of my favorite things on a slow day bowhunting is trying to bag a few squirrels with the bow...does a number on arrows but I always bring some of the crap ones out with me for this purpose....nothing like getting to truck for lunch with the guys and having a few squirrels lol Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk

  3. First of all, I noticed that fisher2 specifically kept his remarks to the practice range shooting only. I love taking super long shots on targets. The additional challenge is what makes a practice session fun and interesting. Just watching that arrow traveling down range over 80 yards or so and hopefully sticking it in the target is a pretty great rush. As noted by most here, trying to take that target range success and applying it to hunting conditions would definitely be another story. I have often thought about deer jumping the string and how that problem would be accentuated by distance. But that is rather dramatic. How about a deer just suddenly deciding to walk? According to "The Deer of North America" by Leonard Lee Rue, a deer walks 3-1/2 to 4 MPH. So using that speed, if a guy was shooting some super fast bow, 400 fps for example, at 100 yards and the deer decided to start walking as the bowhunter shot, over 100 yards, the deer could move 46.2". Even at 50 yards he could move 23.1". That's not running, or bolting, or evading, that's just deciding to take a step or two. Never mind all the other points that have been made about buck fever, wind, a little form hick-up, and maybe some unforeseen twig over those long distances. Just consider a simple decision of the deer to start walking (which eventually he's definitely going to do at some point). The longer the distance shot, the worse the wound or if you're lucky a complete miss. I'm not sure why people refuse to acknowledge that a bow and arrow is a close range hunting implement. That used to be accepted as the reason for taking on the challenge of bowhunting. It doesn't matter what you can do on the range at measured distances and at a stationery target. That is all great for impressing your friends and perhaps collecting a tournament win or two. But it probably is not all that great an idea to try applying all that to hunting situations.

  6. Decided to give a turkey euro a try today. I didn't realize how many nuts and bolts were in one of these things. Fortunately I took LOTS of reference photos had some spare parts laying around in the bone pile just in case. I had to swap a few out that must have got misplaced or broken during the shootout. Still gotta add some finishing touches to it (nasal bones), but it's done for the most part. Most likely paint this one white. I'm not crazy about the look of bird skulls, but it was a fun/relaxing little project, and sure beat the heck out of mowing the grass......, again!

  7. So Ive decided to take some pictures and start this thread to log my progress as a novice plotter.... Backround: My family owns around 22 acres in the Catskill Mountains of new York. The area used to be a big dairy farm area but most of the farmers have since been subsidized by uncle sam and the deer population is feeling the effects. So last summer I decided to start my own QDM plan... * Fortunatly my county is an Antler Restriction county so it is illegal to shoot any deer with less than 3 on one side... This is my property. The front area will not be plotted. The second field has since undergone a lot of work. Year 1: Had woods thinned out by logger with biology degree to improve habitat Planted 10 apples trees 4 dunston chestnuts and 4 crab apples Fall planted 1 acre of Antler King Clover with Chicory additive (the long green plot in second field) The area with the blue lines is where I planted the apple trees. I plan to expand the existing plot another acre so it will be, just as long but much wider (it will be on both sides of the existing cedar trees that you can see in the picture... Since this was our first year we had a farmer friend till the land... I wasn't very impressed with the results, this is how it came out after its fall planting. No lime or fertilizer was used in this year, it was planted Aug 1 and this was the result... We weren't very pleased in this year... We were just starting off, this year I came back much more determined.... Started off the year by frost seeding the plot with some more clover and chicory in early March. I decided that this year ( With the help from this site) I would expand the plot into LC's mix. I went and got my soil test it came back 5.9, so I went and got 2 tons of lime and when I started to spray it in late april, I started to notice a lot of clover.... So, I decided to take a ton of the lime I had and spread it on the existing clover plot. It was time to get a tractor.... So after much debate I ended up picking up a Allis Chalmers 5020. Since then I have obtained a chisel plow, a disk, a sprayer for the atv, a lime spreader and a mower. So then begain the plowing experiment.... I have no tractor experience so all of this has been a learning process with my two buddies. Its been very hard not to rush but the excitement is sometimes hard to overcome. Our soil is very rocky and more of a clay based soil, its drains ok. After a lot of hard work and pass after pass (and a few wheelys on the tractor) we were able to start seeing what we thought should look like a food plot! I know its early to be planting but we wanted to get a head start on turning over the soil while we had the free weekends. We plan on planting mid july because the local farmers records show the first frost coming in late September. I went up to the cabin three weeks ago to check on my cameras and mess around on the tractor and boy was I surprised at the progress of the clover! What a huge difference the past 8 months have made! Im so happy I gave it a chance to grow. I plan on mowing and fertilizing it in mid june. The soil we turned over for the new LC mix area started to take on some new weeds. You can see the plot here... the left side is the existing clover and right side is the north eastern portion of the plot where we plan on putting LC brassica mix. ( unsure of what that red patch of weeds on the left is, need to spray with cleth soon) Just recently went up again to mow , spray and fertilize (0,0, 60) Looking forward to tilling over other side next month with the fall plot (Lickcreek mix)

  10. Some 65-71 yard shots. (My betters shots!) First two shots are at about 65 yards(uphill) and 67 yards flat. 3rd picture with 6 arrows was yesterday at 70. The two deer are 71 yards downhill slightly. If you can not shoot this well when you are ready to hunt you should not be taking shots this long. As I get better shooting longer distance I find that realistically I would keep my range within 50 yards preferring a 40 or less as ideal! Form issues have cause me to reduce this to 35 yard max when my body will not cooperate. Most of the time this is due to overshooting my bow. Besides being a deer addict I guess I am a bow shooting addict too... Too much fun! Picture of deer was at 30 yards having some fun! How well can you shoot past 65 yards? Suffolk Archers field shoot is Sunday if anyone is interested. Most shots for compound (Hunting bow) are less than 50 yards, accuracy being key. This shoot is at paper circle targets only, no 3D. It is 12 targets with 2 positions at each target 2 arrows from each spot and you do the course twice. 112 arrows plus warm up, long day. Score is 5 for a bull, 4 for the next ring and 3 for the outer ring with a possible 560 as a perfect score. Hope to beat my 512.

  14. Have you seen Wooly's legs? You never know, maybe his legs aren't anything to scuff at.

  15. Wooly, you never cease to amaze me...<<grin>>.. A female friend of mine, who happens to be a veterinarian, has a hobby of collecting skulls. I don't believe that SHE even has a turkey skull, and she's a very successful turkey hunter, with a couple of world slams to her credit. However, she also wears shorts and her legs are much prettier than yours.

  17. Wife, daughter , brother and I took soon to be 90 Pop fishing yesterday. Handful of decent sized largemouth, big pumpkinseeds and a mess of nice perch. He by far caught the most fish. Told him I was going to take back his new rod:reel combo for one that didn't catch more fish than the rest of us. Great day was had.

  28. take her to a range, let her shoot, buy a gun safe and let let her have the key code for it so you have to ask her for the weapon. that way she can kill you but you cant kill her with it. my wife is on board now course im hooked on bows but she wants a shotgun
