  6. Great action shots there! No one will ever convince me crashing antlers early in the season is a bad idea. I've seen more battles in October than a lifetime of Novembers!

  7. Below are pictures of a first year fall food plot that we finished in August. This area was once a heavily overgrown scrub apple orchard with Honeysuckle so thick you couldn't walk through it at all. We cleared the entire orchard, plowed, disc'd and planted this year. This area has many positive factors. It is on the top of a hill with large AG fields off to one side and a deep ravine with a bedding area at the bottom, on the other side. The plot has numerous heavy producing apple trees, a number of red and white oaks along the perimeter and the plot we put down this year consists of Rye, Brassica and Clover. With the main wind, this plot is very huntable and we have already set out stands. I predict the deer will use this in the early season and rut as a staging plot before heading into the AG fields and as a main feed plot once winter settles in. Here are some pics starting with the plowed area to the most recent pic including 15 days of growth.

  9. I think if more of the hunting crowd fought against the safe act, the outcome would've been a little different. It seems that a lot of hunters think that the safe act just affects the "tactical" crowd and it couldn't be further from the truth.

  10. Yes, it is the DEC that has jurisdiction over those events. A phone call would have been the right thing to do. Even if you put it down, the DEC should be notified. It can be kind of embarrassing and perhaps even costly if the DEC is notified by someone else. Butchering the deer before the DEC is called is basically destroying the evidence that it was a justifiable mercy-killing. Ethics-wise, it sounds like he did what needed to be done by someone. No problem there. But self protection from prosecution should be the primary concern at that point.

  11. I have a thing for huge eights, but I've never seen New York's all-time best 8-point. He was shot in Ontario county by Charlie York in '94. I've been trying to track down a pic but haven't had any luck. If anyone has one or knows anything about it I'd love to see it.

  12. Checked cameras for the 2nd time this year. 1st check was 8/9 – 8/24 here > http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23843-3n-putnam-co-8914-82314/ This time I had 3 cams out from 8/24 – today. Main cam was in same spot as always near acorns in Putnam County (3N) on private 8 acres behind some houses. A second cam I put watching an area that I threw some “Throw & Grow”. I’ve had a small bag of this I once got for free at Cabelas a few years ago and never used it. Well last time I checked the cams I just kicked around some leaves and threw the seed. I was shocked to actually see it grow. I actually wasn’t shocked to see deer (1 real nice buck) eating it because there is not much feed where I hunt, as I have seen deer eating bark sometimes. This throw and grow spot is about 75 yards from the main cam and then I added a 3rd cam another 75 yards or so on the other side of the main cam. Anyway, it was best “pull” of cams in my life (this is my 3rd year using cams on this property). I got over 1,000 pics in 3 weeks. Tons of does and fawns. Also tons of red fox, maybe some are the same but many appear different sizes. But literally 400+ pics of red fox. Also, got my 1st ever Bobcat! And first ever Coyote! Lastly, and most importantly, I think there are about 5-6 different bucks and 1 definite 8 pointer. I only had 2 extra SD cards so I pulled 2 cards and took a picture of the 8 pointer on my cell phone off the camera before putting the card back in. Do you guys think the 8 pointer on 9/12 is the same as the hardhorned buck on 9/13? I can’t quite tell, and of course would be happy if they are 2 different bucks. Let me know!

  27. Glad to share, hate to type too much ; ) This link is the best I've found but there are many more I'm sure. https://www.google.com/?tab=ww#q=how+to+make+prosciutto+at+home Whats different from what I do? Well mostly the fact I grow my own herbs and spices when I can. Most importantly I use the best quality sea salt and salt peter i can get usually ordered online but occasionally brought back from my folks in Italy. I use a vented and modified plastic wardrobe for the final 18 month drying process. PM me with questions, I'm sure I've forgotten something.....

  34. what ends up happening is, is that the pilot orifice is about as small as a needle if not smaller and now that there isn't gas going thru it.....it doesn't take much to clog them up. usually all we do is take off the pilot assembly from the gas valve and and blow them out with a C02 cartridge or a broach. takes 10 mins

  36. Shouldn't take but less than a minute to light a pilot. Having it off for the summer should not cause any issue with the unit other than not knowing how to relight it. Another thing to remember - all heating appliances should have a yearly service performed. Late summer is a great time to schedule.

  39. The safe act had probably been waiting in the wings for years and I'm sure it didn't take a six figure paid strategist to tell cuomo to drop the hammer on it in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting. Since his adgenda is purely political, I don't doubt that he'll try to add onto the safe act when in reality he is sitting idly by and waging no kind of war against crime. He's the biggest criminal in the state!

  42. Finally got up to my old mans to toss the plots in. This was about 2 weeks ago. Two small plots. Soil is super rocky w/shale. Its been getting better and better over the last 2 years though. First field, prep: Second field prep, only did 1/2 the field because we had good clover growing. This was from Sunday, growth over 13 days from planting, with minimal rain. Field 1 (1/2 is Brassicas w/turnips, other side is winter oats) Field 2 (winter oats in the front, old clover in the back)

  45. Hey guys, I went up to the Catskills and bowhunted out of my tent solo for the weekend. It was wicked. Scat everywhere. My first bear hunt. I'm a spot and stalk guy, I love to be moving and exploring, it makes me a little scared at times but phyically it's demanding and also the psychological component is amazing. No luck though. It's pretty clear they know what's going on. I logged some perfect set ups with my Trimble app, one in a marsh where I scented a small beaver hut with hiding all around depending on wind direction, and another on a set of cliffs that overlook a bedding area where I found not only scat but items that had been stolen from campers with HUGE teeth marks in them, coffee cans, juice bottle, chip bags. I made scents out of extracts of caramel / vanilla / anise and they were potent. I could smell my scented spots from 40 yards away in hiding. I started at 6:30 am, I was a little too freaked out to kick into the forest at dark with how much activity there was and I think that would have increased my chances. Early am gearing up I bumped into a really cool cat, I wish I had gotten his info because he clearly knew his business, he's been hunting that area for 20+ years and has beena round the world on various trips. He was a total badass, military cut, former corrections officer, I was kicking myself that I didn't at least get his email. He showed me his trail cam pics that he had just retrieved and there were some beasts up there, at least 400 lbs. One pic was just ears as the bear was sniffing the camera. That got me so amped. For everyone asking about guns, it is a gun and bow early season, so bowhunter, be careful with going full camo, I came across some 13 year olds, great kids but they were clearly a little wet behind the ears and I swapped my camo hat for a blaze orange one after that. Once I was in hiding I swapped it off. They're out there. I could have gone deeper but with the temperature, to eat that critter I would have had to skin and butcher in the field, and running that kind of weight in a pack bugged me a out a bit, so I kept it within a couple miles from my tent, which was about 1/2 mile from my car. Damn straight I decented before going to sleep, and kept a dead clean campsite. I'm going back up in 2 weeks for the 19th - 21st and I think if I can build up the courage I'll go deeper up to the peaks. There's so many of those rocky outcroppings and the forest gets thick. I'll tell you, I came across a pile of teeth marked juice bottles and scat and was surrounded by terrain they could easily be bedded or hiding in, I don't care who you are it gets a little hairy. I heard a grunt at one point, I'm not sure if it was another hunter making a call but I was standing right over a fresh patch of scat with ferns crushed all around me. my heart started pounding so hard I couldn't hear well. Took a deep breath and hunkered down for an hour or so then got antsy and moved out. Saw some turkeys that I spooked, and no deer. Not sure why but I think the bears spook the deer, curious what you guys who are more experienced think. I'll tell you one thing, they're out there for sure, en masse. Big ones too. Trail cams and scat piles don't lie.
