  8. WOOT! I finally had the perfect opportunity to mention to my boss that since we were starting to slow down a bit that "hunting season" was coming at a good time!! I was going to need some time off coming towards the end of October, November and early December. We've been been friends for 40 years and he has always know I've hunted a lot, NOW he will know how much that really is!! He said "no sweat"............... Tomorrow I'm planning to bow hunt for the morning & evening and shoot the rifle during mid day. Rough day............... Soooo, to celebrate the 2015 Hunting Season (I know many of you SOB's have a jump on me) I'm going to offer a toast. Bourbon Manhattan and a new to me Geno Denning knife!! Bottoms UP and cheers....................................................

Don't even have a bow just video cam and the cam stinks in even shady light as I learned this morning. No video either. Oh well. Wasn't busted so hope I seem him again. Good Intel I guess.

  11. I think I would be tempted to try TILEX . You want to get the mold off the boots and you might as well kill it also . Removes the stains you can't stand, and kills the mold you can't see. Use Tilex® Mold & Mildew Remover as directed, and you'll not only remove ugly stains, you'll kill the mold and mildew that cause them. You can also use it to disinfect vinyl and plastic surfaces, even no-wax floors.

  12. Snow sure is great to see for bow season but the first real snowfall of the season usually shuts the deer down for a few days in my experience.

  15. In for coffee now. Heard some really weird growls on a ridge above me about 6am . Never heard the likes before. Went on for some time too. Edit: OK, watched some youtube vids of Bucks growling. Looks like it may have been the Big 10 Buck. Never heard 'em growl before. Very deep, drawn out, chesty growly sounds. Not like the usual grunts.

  16. For those concerned about getting a SIM card or the proper plan, I believe I have figured out a way to do it for you, so buying could literally be as simple as paying, opening the box, and turning the cam on. Obviously that would add a bit of cost, but that is now possible.

  17. So I have been thinking a lot about all the prep I do for hunting. One of my greatest memories from when I was 5 or 6 years old was when my father took me to hunting camp. This was back in the 70's. I can remember the room being cloudy from all the people smoking cigars and cigarettes in the light of the lanterns burning above the kitchen table. In the morning they would get up and cook bacon and eggs over the coal stove never thinking for a second what they smelled like. They would put on their wool red and black or red and green coats and whatever they wore for pants and boots and head out after breakfast. Most of them with a cigarette in their mouth. I can remember my Dad and I saw 22 deer that day. All while my Dad was toting around a 5 or 6 year old that I am sure wasn't exactly quiet. They were all doe (they didn't have doe tags back then) but still, 22 deer. Now when I go hunting I get up an hour early. Take a shower in the special soap, put on deodorant that doesn't smell (or work) take my cloths that have been washed in a special detergent and leave them in a tote in the back of my truck. Go to my hunting area and get dressed while freezing making sure not to make my cloths smell like the inside of my truck. Spray myself down with some magic elixir so I don't smell and to this day I have never seen 22 deer in one day. I have never seen a buck bigger than a 6pt. So I haven't been out yet this year but I decided that Sunday, when I go out....My cloths will be washed in the magic detergent but they won't be in a tote and I will probably spray down with the magic spray but only because I have it. I am not going to worry about it, I am just going to hunt and see what the season brings me.....Does anybody else just hunt anymore?

  18. Oh I never over do it anymore. I'd like to but it ain't happening. I went to bed at 9:30 and woke up at 3:00 although the alarm was set for 4:30. Laid there for 45 minutes and said the heck with it..............took a shower, brushed the pearly whites, made a cup of coffee and hit the road. I got to my spot around 6:30, took my time changing into hunting clothes/harness etc then made the long 250 yard hike in. A doe and fawn came by around 7:30 or so and although I had a real nice opening at 16 yards I thought they would swing around a blow down and head to the apple tree. No dice.............they did the old backyard football slant pattern and kept going. All & all in was a very pleasant sit. I PLANNED on hunting the afternoon also but I have to confess; I made a decision that shows maturity. My wife and I have plans for tomorrow and I'm tired so I came home. I didn't want to be tracking (maybe??) a wounded deer late, then gutting it and driving home. Then tomorrow I'd be obligated to butchering.......................... I did spend some time checking out a couple new places, moved a camera, shot two rifles and ate at Subway. Home by 3:30 and I'm basically on Queer Street now.......................

  22. You're fishing the mouth of the Catt ? Lakeside off the wall ? Used to do that a lot . Just text my buddy if he's heard how it's been there. Nothing better than hooking one and having it get aerial on you. Nothing worse than slipping off those giant slippery algae covered rocks trying to net a fish. Umm, not that I've done that

  24. I've been involved in several hobbies and hunting is my newest. It seems infected by the same thing most other hobbies are: an excessive amount of products and people who get away from the basics and instead try and buy success. Most (all?) of these products seem supported by a scant, at best, amount of scientific data. I think archery suffers the same thing.

  25. Yeap, I wash all my hunting clothes before the season starts with the tide pods without scent and all the other stuff and that's the end of my scent control. Shower with irish spring soap..(ha ha.I think the deer like it.) and hunt down wind. There was a time when I jumped through all the hoops to be scent free, but I personally have not ever seen the advantage yet..Not that there probably isn't a small advantage, just not worth it for me.. I have plenty of deer on the walls.. I have had just as many deer spook then as I do now. Playing the wind seems to be the key. .Just getting into the woods is what it is all about... I am still thinking of trying the wood smoke method though.

  26. We went up last weekend to check out Bass Pro Shops in Niagara on the Lake. Awesome store with a very friendly, helpful staff. The adjacent shopping mall and food court was good also. Just about all the major stores were represented there. My wife and daughter were thrilled with the whole thing. I had not been to Canada since the "enhanced-license" deal went into effect. Fortunately, my work sprung for a pass-port this summer, so I was able to use that to get across the bridge and back. Next time we go up, we will be sure to check out the Falls from that side. That won't be until January at best however as all my weekend free time will be hunting until then. Happy Anniversary.

  29. Fencing today ...now it goes all the way past the blind so they have to round the end to get to front plot or feed down lane way past the blind to get to neighbors swamp...doing this isn't a quiet thing...pounding brace posts using gator to stretch the fence and securing it to the posts... I look up and standing maybe 35 yards away is a fawn eating...then 10 mins later another...I'm in a bright wht sweat shirt and blue jeans,,,they would look my way chew bugs on their backs then go back to eating ...I am just part of their landscape...lol

  31. I am a self proclaimed godless heathen... Although wolc 123 refers to his faith often, I have not seen him "pushing" it on anybody else.. As long as he doesn't preach to me ( and I have not witnessed him preaching to anybody) he's OK with me.... I think it's rude to deride a person because of his religious convictions UNLESS he is deriding other people because of thiers, or their lack thereof... wolc 123 has not done this to my knowledge...

  32. Even if you don't get a smart TV you can still hook up Roku, GoogleTV or something like that. My DVD player has options for Youtube, Netflix, Blockbuster.... If you have good fast internet you really don't need cable TV anymore, unless you want to watch a lot of live sports. Although, I think you can find a way to watch almost anything via the internet.

  37. Same as a lot of you, I don't get crazy about being scent free. I don't think that it's possible to be totally scent free, no matter what you do or how much money you spend. I do shower each morning before hunting with fragrance free soap and deodorant, bought on sale at W.marts. Wash my hunting clothes every other weekend. Spray down before going into the woods. Once in the woods, I do my best to keep the wind in my face or to my advantage. That works much better than any scent control I could use!

  38. Also, please post up where anyone, ANYONE said age has little to do with it? The problem is people put too much weight into age when trying to align it with antler growth and they do so because they do not understand the role of other growth factors like soil quality and density, nor body size related to latitude.

  39. I hunt for the freezer so if opportunity knocks, I'm pulling the trigger on one. Shot one opening morning last year. Without hesitation. Don't think a doe or two is really going to change 'search" by the bucks. Big doe or big bodied buck with small rack, big buck with large rack all eat the same IMO. Interesting comment about buttons hanging around. Anytime I see a button he's all by himself and gets a pass anyhow. Blockheads are pretty easy to define.

  40. Yeah I'll admit to being the fart guy on occasion. But it's ok, I stay warmer on cold days, and I swear I've farted a couple bucks in! And I have perfected it to the point that my a$$ sounds better than my grunt call! I can make all the calls too! Big buck, small buck, doe and fawn bleats, tending grunts. Currently working on the snort wheeze!

  45. Some .410's are designed to shoot shot shells as well as .45 Colt. If the gun is designed for it, it isn't a safety issue. Most .410's will not shoot anything but the shot shell safely though. I don't think that is the reason they are frowned on for deer hunting. It has to do with it's limitations. With a good .410 slug, the firearm has the energy to be capable of killing deer at limited range. It may even be a good choice for a very small young hunter, or a small woman, due to it's low recoil and muzzle blast. That being said, it really only qualifies for deer if shots are kept within it's range limitations. Bow hunters are well aware of the range they can effectively kill deer, and usually practice a lot. But many gun hunters think their firearm can effectively shoot farther than it really can. IMHO, the .410 slug gun is limited to 50 yards or less for deer hunting.
