Slayer does it again! RAGE!!!!

If the good Lord didn't want us to hunt and eat them, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

FIRST POST ON THE KILL THREAD! Saturday morning was hunting at my aunt's property in Rome for the early season. Saw 5 does in the morning and almost got a shot at one but it was a little to thick so I passed on it. About 8 I left the corn field I was sitting next to for a little still hunting. I started walking down an old logging road on the property trying to walk up on something possibly bedded in the beach trees. Got about 150 yards into the woods from my aunt's hay field and saw a black squirrel which I was very tempted to shoot (and almost did!) Thought it through though, didn't want to use up a rage and possibly break an arrow. Well its after 930 now and I had stuff to do with my nephew and girlfriend so I turned around to work my way back to the car. Didn't even take a step and I see a deer walking from my left to righ crossing the logging road I was standing right in the middle on. I could see it was a buck but he was about 80 yards out so I just watched and couldn't believe he was just going to walk right by me. Well he turned towards me and took a few steps then stopped. Then took a couple steps to the right and stopped again. He was teasing me! He finally turned back towards me and was coming right to me! About 40 yards out he got behind a big tree so I quickly and quietly took three or four steps forward and got into a position for a shot. He stepped out from behind the tree slightly quartering away, I drew, stopped him and let it fly! Watched the Nokternal laser right into his ribs. a little back but with the angel still a good shot. I got my composure and texted my girlfriend to tell her plans were going to have to push back a couple hours. I waited maybe ten-fifteen minutes and then looked for my arrow and blood. Found good red blood right from the shot so I got on the trail. about 60 yards into it I found my arrow feet from a stand my father and I built years ago. About another 100-150 yards I found him in a cedar swap dead! Apparently I wasn't the first one to find him....damn coyotes already started to open him up where my arrow went in. luckily no meat was lost. He was my best bow buck so far! Good mass at the bases, good brows and the best part...the hunt itself less than an hour from shot to finding him 0945-1040

Going out, but don't have any expectations of killing a deer. Mainly, doing it to relax, enjoy the view, and to celebrate the season kick-off. Would rather hold off on filling any doe tags, until it's cooler, and I don't need to feel so "rushed" to get one cut up and in the freezer. (No electricity at camp, butcher myself, and would prefer to leave it hang a day or so.) I was on the fence about whether to take the opener off or not. I was out at camp yesterday doing some last minute jobs and it was absolutely beautiful with fall colors and relaxing! It was a still afternoon, birds were chirping, and it was very relaxing just watching the leaves falling, hearing them ticking off other leaves on their way down, as they slowly drifted to the ground. Made up my mind. that mentally, I need a day off to de-stress and unwind, and I know just the place to do it! Taking 3 days vacation off every week from Oct. 1st - Dec. 1st. (Can probably get use to working 2 days/wk! LOL) Plus, camp is right on my way home, so even if I do work, I get out early enough that I can hunt every afternoon/evening if I wanted to. Good luck, but most of all, BE SAFE everyone! Do yourself, your family, and friends a favor and PLEASE USE THOSE SAFETY HARNESSES!!!!

Last spring I stopped in to a local flea market that I have been going to for a few years now. I have gotten to know this one vender, well enough to say hello and shoot the bull for a minute or two. This trip the vender had some hunting items for sale. Two tree stands, some knives fanny packs etc….I picked out a decent box call. Then the vender starts on me. She says "don't tell me you hunt" "You seem like such a nice guy" She starts rolling her eyes and shaking her head in disapproval. I ask her why she is selling hunting equipment if she is so against hunting. Her only reply was that SHE doesn't use the stuff to kill animals. We went back and forth, but it was civil. She doesn't talk to me as much anymore, but when I stop in, I make it a point to always ask her if she has any hunting gear for sale. LOL!! She just grins...

Ok, now that I have your attention.... Hello all- I am slowly trying to track down the current whereabouts of the huge buck that Paulina Brandreth and Reuben Cary teamed up on back in 1910 or so on my family property. This is the buck seen in the iconic photo below with Reuben Cary holding it. The 2nd picture is of a family friend, taken by the caretaker in the 1960's or so. The setting was on the family land as well. That 2nd picture was sent to me several months ago by the grandson of the family friend after he received some old photos from the caretaker's descendant. At the time neither of us connected the dots that the mount was actually THE buck, and he speculated at 1st that it was a different deer. Because the camera angles are different, it took me up until a few days ago, while looking at those vintage photos and daydreaming, that the deer were one and the same. After pointing out some key characteristics, my Dad and the grandson both agreed, but that now leaves the burning question, where is it now? I had always believed the rack had gone to the American Museum of Natural History because of a passage in a book written by Robert Wegner called Deer and Deer Hunting III. In a chapter devoted to Paulina Brandreth, Wegner mentioned a comment made by Roy Chapman Andrews (naturalist, adventurer, explorer, Director of the American Museum of Natural History, possible inspiration for "Indiana Jones" character, and friend of Paulina's) while examining the rack for possible inclusion into the American Museum of Natural History that the rack was the thickest or heaviest he had ever seen on a whitetailed deer. I always interpreted this to mean that the deer did indeed go to the museum, but because Andrews died in 1960 and the rack was photographed on our land during the same time period, this was evidently not the case. It would be really neat to find this deer again as it is by far the biggest to come out of our property and an absolute monster for the Adirondacks. For all I know it could be hanging in a dingy bar in Anytown, NY. Come to think of it, there is a big deer in Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, but I don't really remember what it looked like. The huge brow tines and distinctive main beams should make this deer very recognizable. So, if you think you may have seen it, please let me know!

Sooo. Got the bow back Sunday. It cost me $130 combined for the parts and to fix and tune it. Looks like Its shooting pretty good. 20 yards on the left/30 on right. Still have 10 days to keep shooting before I hunt so I should be ok

I think we're on the same page. But for what it's worth, as a salary person I'm paid to do a job. If said job takes 50 hours a week or 38, i'm compenstated the same. If it takes 38, perhaps i can take on some more responsibility and earn a promotion. And maybe it only takes 38 because of my skill. To your point, yes promotions come with performance. But within performance is the ability to take on more. A smart man knows when he must push back. A smart man knows when the additional work wont get him anymore. There is no black and white answer to any of this, but simply... a person has to pick his own path. Hard work will generally always pay off. Doing your best everyday will almost always pay off. But refusing to work a little harder, go above and beyond or to do the right thing because you don't feel compensated for it? That will never get you to the next level. And these are the employees who i would rather not work for me. You will not just get promoted for giggles. You need to earn it.

You can't argue with people who are uninformed and wish to stay that way.

I have been at my current job for over 21yrs and have given up alot of happy things for them for their 6 day work week. I missed alot if not most of my 3 kids games,meets,competitions etc through their childhoods. I gave up our 26ft Searay sport cruiser we kept and used quite often on Lake Ontario.....be a cold,cold day in hell that I give up my hunting time in NY. I WILL find another job if need be- and they are very aware of that fact. I work to survive, not the other way around.

i like antler insanities app. I think the cabelas app will actually allow you to plot a path to the stand but last i checked it was $5. I suggest you use caution with the GPS map apps. Kill your battery.

But you put together the idea of labor in return for permission as equating to compensation which would remove the relationship from GOL coverage. You are lawyer, license or not - moral code notwithstanding. lol

There really always has been only one thing that would get me into work. It has nothing to do with making a name or climbing a ladder or some wonderful title, or a position of status. Quite simply, the motivator for me has always been money. Not the promise of money off in the future, but money paid for work accomplished. So when somebody told me that I would perform extra work but with no extra compensation, that didn't happen very often. And when it did happen, they were not dealing with a happy satisfied employee. So the bottom line is that old saying, "you get what you pay for" really does apply. Terms of work shouldn't be based on how much free time they can scam out of you. If that is their M.O. then it probably is a shyster outfit that I wouldn't want to work for anyway.

If you want to get more involved with your hobby, fletching arrows would be the logical step. Kind of like a guy that reloads, builds his own fishing rods, ties his own flies, plants food plots etc. All those things can keep you connected to your passion through out the year. back in the 80's and 90's I built all my own ceder arrows up from raw shafts. Stain, seal, dip, crest, taper, fletch and glue on heads. Broadheads were all purchased and needed to be sharpened, by hand. I have a bunch of friends that took it one step further; they built their own bows. Recurves and longbows, mostly one piece but some were takedown models. And perfect! How far do you want to go? Its all fun!

I'd probably laugh at you Grow if it hadn't happened to me too. No drag rags, just an accidental spillage of deer piss on my hunting duds the day before while filling my scent canisters.. The next day on my hike in, I had a little 3pt that decided we were going to have a "bull fight" before the sun came up when I spotted his glowing eyes in my headlamp at a scrape near my blind,lol I'm pretty sure it was buck piss if memory serves me correct. We both got a little bloody from that pre dawn encounter, but fortunately neither of us were seriously injured.

Maybe its a double stand....you guys can cozy up hahaha

Calling for 70* here... which should keep deer patterns right on track with what the rest of the summer has been like weather wise to this point. Just planning a couple prime time sits in the mornings and evenings early on. I ain't gonna sweat it. Better days to come no doubt, but I wouldn't miss the opener for the world. Seeing plenty of late afternoon activity around a few of my stands, so keeping my fingers crossed for an opportunity at a shooter no mater what.
