  1. we have does like that around the house. Not targets but buck bait once the rut rolls around.
  2. Grouse-you mentioned that DEC has convened a interagency group to study the lead issue. What are the hunting groups and conservation groups that are representing the sportsmen/shooters of NY. I might like to be involved, at least peripherally.
  3. nice deer, nice mount. Hunt details?
  4. Here's a thought. Many counties and towns in NY allow sheds on skids without being considered real property (hence no jump in taxes and no need to a building permit.) Check and you may be pleasantly surprised. Our limit is less than 120 square feet. We have 2 (a she-shed and a he-hovel). Both of ours are commercial ones. The last one cost $3000 but I just got in under a price increase. I put mine up on a gravel pad and set it on 4 inch concrete blocks for better air flow. Amish build them all the time around here. If you go this route, make sure you get pressure treated skids, joists and flooring plywood. Amish like to use all Amish, rough- cut hemlock which is fine except for the items mentioned above. Last year finding pressure treated "real" plywood and framing elements was difficult to find and real expensive. This year is gong to be worse. Either way, if you are going to need rough cut, some of the small mills around here are booked until September-October.
  5. My son worked for a local Lowes. He was Lumber "foreman" (after being Hardware "foreman"). I still know some of the guys. They can't get any folks, so people don't show up and still have a job. They show up late and still have a job. They used to let folks return tools that are really not in the boxes. Drove him nuts. this was about 15 years ago. He is a deputy in our sheriffs dept. now.
  6. The 760's are pretty reliable and straight forward, so I bet it will function alright. When sighting it in give it plenty of time between shots as some of them have a tendency to have the group wander as the barrell heats up. And watch out about dropping the clip. If it lands on the top, sometimes just a little bend affects it from feeding. Our group has several of them, and most guys have bought spare clips. We had one 760 and one 742 that got some rust in the chamber and that kept them from cycling.
  7. Fenimore Art Museum- Cooprstown- Excellent primitives, Early american and Native American art.
  8. Cory, Catskill kid had the best response. It seems like he is in the 480a program which is a good fit for some, and not for other landowners. The 16 inch (presumeably diameter breast height) is not always true. Depends on a lot of different factors and the landowner objectives. Feel free to PM me with you number if you wish to chat.
  9. hi Cory, I am a retired Forester, though I still do a few sales a year. When you say a forest consultant, make sure you are getting a actual Forester. A lot of folks call themselves Foresters but are actually loggers or are working for a mill. You might want to talk with your local DEC office. They will be familiar with Foresters working in your area. Most Foresters that are in the buisness are members of the Society of American Foresters, though I know of a few good ones that are not. Most foresters work on a percentage of the sale bid price. Make sure they have a good contract in force. Usually when you do a bid sale, the higher bids will offset the cost of the forester and you will have a better residual stand.
  10. well that is a day you will remember forever.
  11. regarding your hay wagon unloader and rail, you might be able to peddle that to the Amish.... and they would probbly take it down.
  12. Ticks- I treat all my camo, my long johns, hats, gloves, etc. with Permethrin. I mix 10% Livestock and Premises Permethrin at a rate of 1 oz. permethrin to 20 oz. of water in a heavy duty hand sprayer. I hang the gear on a line, spray heavily and let dry. I do a second coat. I emphasis cuffs, collars and any openings. Not a sanctioned use according to the label. Not good for cats! But fine for people, and other critters. Has a slight petroleum smell until its hung for a couple of days. If you are worried about the odor for deer hunting, Sawyer makes 24 oz. spray bottles of permethrin spray that seems to be odorless (has no petroleum carrier) but it is like 10 times as expensive. Both hold up through several washings. I buy my concentrate at Tractor Supply Company.
  13. I like to sit in brushy hedgerows with woods to my back. I always carry compound leverage clippers and 11 inch black zip ties. I cut 3 or so viewing/shooting "slots" in the brush. I take the cut limbs and reinforce the brush thats left, and then put a zip tie around the brush and pull it together. When the turkeys are behind the remaining brush, you can get away with quite bit of movement and get the gun up.
  14. wolc123- hope you are wearing safety glasses with that chisel peening over like that. I've had metal flakes fly off and inbed in stuff. maybe a quick grind to the chisel might be a good idea?
  15. great place. Wife has taken courses there. I occasionaly hit a exhibit.
  16. All the nurses that I know always complain about their backs from lifting patients in their beds or transferring them to Hoyer lifts. Get help when lifting!!! And get nursing shoes with good arch supports. Great career choice.
  17. I had a very great career in conservation (forestry). Was lucky enough to get a job in the field. Never had a day I did not look forward to work. But over the years, I met so many folks that hated their job, or just tolerated it to keep the family solvent and provide for there kids. If you can get into it, go for it. Many of my family are in the nursing profession and all love it, although the past couple of years the stress from understaffing and Covid 19 has been intense. Have you thought about night courses that woudl work up to a LPN or RN?
  18. came to the line that said mandolin in it. Was going to post to watch you fingers, but obviously too late. When I get down low on the spud, I just toss it to the side. I've nipped myself on them before.
  19. I think NYtracker is right about the date of 2009 being when the "free" doe tags were no longer given out, because that was the impetus for my getting my lifetime licenses. Anyway, if you do not fish the the cost to you would be $62/year for 9 years or $558. Then at age 70, buy the $65 sportsmens license plus your annual bow and muzzle license. But if you fish also, then it will cost you $783 for the nine years so you might as well buy the lifetime now. If you do not opt for the lifetime you need to be aware of possible price hikes.
  20. North country man- Best way to find out about a persons character is to camp with him awhile. Hunting camps will bring out the jerkism in folks. So will spending a few days in a leaky tent with constant rain.
  21. now at 10!!!! Hopefully he hangs on to the election, so that a moderate Republican can show him the door.
  22. left field- one more thing to think about. If possible, you should leave clones of male aspen. these can be identified by there more robust buds and flowering habit. Goggle the images to tell the differences. easy to spot this time of year since they are coming into flower. Why do this? Because the larger, succulent male buds are a important overwintering food for grouse.
  23. Google maps have property lines in most counties in NY. Its the lines from the tax maps. But you need to zoom in to almost the maximum magnification before they show up. And they do not show up on the satellite background. And they do not show property owners names or address.
  24. part of the thorny question regarding navagability is wheter logs can be floated down the river, and has the stream at your point ever been used for this person as far upstream as you own. It was originally defined by commercial traffic. Has been significant litigation regarding this with canoers in the central Adirondacks. DEC might be hesitant to give out a legal opinion unless it is totally clear. But folks can not trespass across your property to reach even navigable waters.
