  1. I think we all know that a no mans lands is just a reference to a high hit that did not get a kill. I hit a doe a few years ago in this area and lost the animal with very little blood. I am not here to argue just saying this is a known spot that is not usually lethal and many of us have had this issue. No mans land no but not a good area for a kill shot with many hunters now showing pictures of how it does not kill. I was also told this NO mans land does not exist but it sure is not a great spot for a kill!
  2. My condolences to you and the family. So hard loosing a family pet especially dogs who are so involved with our everyday life and make it so much richer. Very sorry.
  3. Welcome aboard! Great to have you!
  4. For me I think the main issue would be 2 things, one the extra time to set up! I also hate sitting at the bottom of a tree when I should be in it. 2nd would be my shot stance, I have enough issues with my form standing straight, I think adding additional angles would complicate getting my bubble level and shooting straight. I also do not think I would be comfortable vs a stand. I like to stand, stretch out and sit and most times the stand is set up to face the deer so shooting position is usually set with no need to shoot behind the stand. I do like the advantages of being able to move easily but I do not think I would have nearly the same comfort as any stand. Interested in others opinions on, easy of use and setup, comfort and how well you can shoot from that position. Technically it is a seated position, how many here shoot from a seated position? I actually like shooting from a seated position!
  5. I have the optimizer lite. I don't like how bright the pin gets in sunlight. (I aim off the top of the pin so when it gets larger it throws my sight off causing a low hit.) I cut in half the inside of a toilet paper roll as a shade to help minimize pin glare. They do have a sun shade kit for it along with lenses but I am cheap and the toilet paper fits inside perfect and I get no glare. I secure it with electrical tape. Otherwise I love the sight and have it set up with a 65 lbs Elite at 28.5 draw and light arrows at 7.2 gpi about 355 grain total I am able to get from 25 to 110 yards on the dial if you set up the sight at the lowest point. The rheostat works great in low light conditions but I almost never need it. This setup tape above the 80 yard line has a red mark above 50 for my 90 yard and a black line for 100 when maxed it is around 110 which I have only used at the Total Archery Challenge which was a long distance shoot and a lot of fun. Overall I would give this site a 9 out of 10 for a basic hunting/target sight excellent overall for the price range.
  6. Shoot as many bows as possible, pick the one that is easiest to shoot and feels best when shooting. Don't get a bow you have trouble pulling back, make sure not to use to much draw weight! Hand grip, valley, back wall and easy tuning are all important. What are you specs I might have some good used bows if interested. Draw weight and length would be needed if your interested and are local. Long Island area.
  7. Merry Christmas! And a happy healthy new year!
  8. 1C, 3C, 3N, 3K, 4F, 5H, 5F, 7R, 7S I usually do not hunt more than 3 WMU a year, these are all I have hunted.
  9. How do you age a buck using antlers?
  10. Over a month left and I have not been out in a month so I am itching! Shot my bow this morning and froze, I will be stalking more than sitting in this weather. Bought a bunch of batteries so I am hoping to get some good footage. With no cover it will be hard to get within 20 yards for good video.
  11. This sucks! I always run out of likes on the best posts! lol Simply awesome, thanks for all the help you all provided to these new hunters! Great stories and great deer! Love seeing new people get into hunting and especially love seeing women who join! Welcome aboard to all the new hunters, congrats on your success whether you harvested a deer or not you have some really good mentors! Remember that hunting is about enjoying the outdoors and you will never had a bad day hunting! Again thanks to all the mentors, your time effort and energy towards helping new hunters is amazing! Keep up the great work!
  12. They can have small spikes as a fawn but I think it is unusual as most only have buttons. I would think early born fawns with healthy mothers and good early spring food would be the most likely to develop these small spikes. Not impossible by any means but rare I would think.
  13. Could just be a real early born buck like you stated, it happens. Just seems strange to me that he is almost twice the size of other fawns you see.
  14. Myself as well! His book "A Guild To Adirondack Deer Hunting" was in our camp for years! Still love reading that along with "Whitetail The Ultimate Challenge". Stubbon1VT I would think it was probably a yearling, when they fatten up sometimes they look smaller than what they really are. Short and round is a good description as fawns usually do not get that fat as they only had a few months to pack it on.
  15. Genetics is one factor. Food abundance, availability, richness (Nutrition) and longevity along with early spring and late winter, stress from food or lack of and predation including human intrusion also factor in. 1) Genetics (Personally I think most deer can grow decent racks if allowed to get to at least 3.5 with 5.5 preferred to maximize growth. Hard to do in NY but possible the problem is they get so smart at that point!) 2) Food Resources (If not enough food or good enough food value most nutrition will go to the body vs antler growth.) 3) Stress (Stress from predation, lack of food and harsh winters will cause poor antler growth as they are more in survival mode.) 4) Winter (Harsh winters stress deer out and slow the antler development due to late spring food.) If I had to guess at what the biggest factor is I would say it is the soil! 2nd would be long winters. Generally speaking good soil produces good food. If you look at a map of NYS you will see some of the best soil also produces the best antlered deer. The other factors also determine and affect antler growth but good soil produces good food which equals good antlers providing the other factors do not interfere.
  16. The video to these pics is posted above. Great info!
  17. Lost an uncle and my best friend of 43 years last week only 50 years old! Stomach issues kept me out of the woods the past month, perfect timing for the rut! Arg. Changing my diet, still need to quite smoking. Working on treating myself better. Looking forward to ending this year and starting 2020 off right, have not hunted with bow since October hope to get out this weekend! 50 hit hard this year! Still think i am young, lol. Good news is my back and neck are OK! lol Lucky for my back Long Island does not keep snow very long when it comes. Tough hunting this time of the year as they have been chased for 2 months plus but I just want to get out and get some quiet time.
  18. Good advice from all. I would also try calling him in, if that does not work go after him! Ghost blind would be the way to go, perfect for that situation.
