thanks all I shot yesterday with my bowtech commander bow and shot well. The first few arrows it did go thru my mind was this going to occur again, she did have me change shots when the bow blew up, had the limbs on the floor, just a handle left in my hand. I did check the limbs, also the string, both are still looking like new. I found I even have the replacement cable. SO next step is getting it down to I guess Oneonta to the bow shop and see what it will cost to just have the string and cable put on. My buddy had a new set of string, cable p[ut on his bow for a top mfg and it was close to $100 bucks. A lot of more bucks then when if you can think back in time PSE had the tear drop cable (metal wire) and the strings was 52 inches long. You could replace in the field by just pullling a draw, have anothere guy put the new string on the other side of the tear dops and then relax your draw, then just cut the old string off. String cost $9.95...cable did not break as they were made with aircraft wire twists with welded tear drops.

Well in all the years of shooting I finally had one blew up at cabel cut and broke when I was at full draw. I had to even pick up the limbs off the floor. I found that when my son had sent the bo to me for my birthday last year in Nov, included was a extra cable and string. SO I will have to take to a shop to have a new cable put on and the current string is still good as new ( less than 200 shots on it ) WHo do you recommend in the Oneonta area ??? or Delhi area ??? my thanks Bill

sounds like you now have it under control. I get it at times and for me even if I change just the release or go to a different bow it goes away for awhile. But does come back it is a mind game.

were is your new camp ????

I use to shoot in the high 60's lb peak weight, but after roto repair operation the best I can do is 58 lbs, also now 70 years young. I have found that arrows still go right thru deer and or stick very well in 3D targets... so I think the question should be do we need that pull weight for archery. I think with the current setup of equiptment, bows, carbon arrows, and the new BH designs maybe a 50 to 60 is all anyone would need unless you are going to hunt ELk or Moose.

they sure looked good.

Ted is not one of my greatest hunters that I would like to take a hunt with. He runs his mouth to much and what he said if you read his exact words should have SS stopping by to dicuss his actions with him.. Were was he like most of the top right wings spoke people in the 60's they sure were not in service with me. They found ways to dodge the draft and or not join the miltary like I did.( Jan 1960 to Nov 1963 USAF)

Bald Eagle nest, Chenango County
sweet old bill replied to Lever action's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
great photo you may want to call the dec and report the location as they are tracking them and have one guy who goes around talking about eagle. I saw him last year at a senior lunch. You live in a great area for hunting and living. My wife retired from the Joyce law firm in town. We are now out in the hills of Oneonta NY. Sure miss all those state hunting lands to hunt on. -
I have tried them all and some days it comes and goes. I found shooting at a blank bale helps, even lower the weight seems to help, changing from one release to another brand helps and or even changing from a 4 pin sight to a slider sight helps...it all in the mind.

Make them a kill on sight. they are all over now and sure have major impacks on both deer and turkey.

Lots of other fire issue as well. I sure wish we would get a few days of rain to get the water level back up. Being on a well is always a issue. I am sure we will also has a fish kill off if the water is way down. That is my best place to fish. I started fishing there in 1964 with my Dad and still keep going back. I just love to hit the water with my fly rod. I am not a good fisherman, but love the sport. I never keep the fish and return them to the stream. At 70 now, still love to be on the river. ALso loved the beaverkill.

NY Spring Turkey Harvest - HUGE 10 Year Decline!
sweet old bill replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Turkey Hunting
same here in 4O area was a high and then the yote came and had dinner. I was able in the past years see several flocks of turkey on our pasture, they had about 50 birds or more each. Now if I see 10 birds It is a good day. Last sprink we found over 5 fawn bones in the pasture and also lots of turkey feathers from young birds...Maybe the DEC should have a allyear shootin sight limit on the yotes... -
well Dad6424 I am down the road from you on Swart Hollow road, I got to say it was not the best for me as well. Being a older hunter (70), I go out for the first 4 hours in the morning and then the last 4 hours till dark with the bow, when gun start I hunted just about every day the first two week for about 6 hours a day. I never saw but 2 doe's and one little 4 point buck in the gun season. During the bow had 3 mom doe, and a total of 4 fawn's go by me several times, saw one spike buck that I think was about 85 lbs, and the small 4 oint buck, also several times during the bow season. Now for yotes, we found in the pasture in June and July 3 fawn skins and about 10 turkey bones/feathers from the Yote's. I did get a shot at one with the bow but missed he was running across at about 20 yards in the brush and I hit a small branch. My grandson did get a few coyotes in his trap line this fall/winter. But sure seems that somehow the deer herd is very damaged in our area. I do think to many doe's and also I would like to go back to one buck per person and take it with whatever you want to hunt with i.e gun, bow, BP and or crossbow. but only one per hunter.

Had one just like that I cured him by working him on a 25 yard rope and choke collar. It took a while so he understand the game was not just to run rabbits but bring they around to me... That it was a team effor. The other one command he got to know was down at the end of the days so Icould walk up to him and put a lead on him to take us both home.

I am sure the warm weather and sunny may have a trigger on early breeding. Down south they are already breeding and there season opens on APril 1 for hunting...

Newest Deer Attractant
sweet old bill replied to Antler Ice's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
as a archery pro shop owner, I use to buy direct from a deer farm. One of the things I did learn was he would ship me direct in 1/2 gal bottle, I would package in 2 or 4 oz bottles and keep in the old ice box in the shop till a customer would buy. It does start to break down and you should not put on the dash of truck or car. In one hour time it becomes just ammonia. -
If I am shooting a 70 lb bow with the lighest carbon arrow I will say it is faster than another type setup. It may even get you a deer when you mis judge the distance i.e 35 yards it seems and the buck is at 40 yards...but there is also so many trade off, you may not be able as the archer to draw, hold and get a clean release, than the outcome can be a total miss. A bow setup for a most forgiving setup for the archer may be the best way to go, in my case a 50 to 60 bow set at 29 inch draw, 56 lbs peak weight, 400 spine shafts bemen, 2 inch BH vanes and 100 grain point. Bow has kisser, peep 1/4, silencers, and d-loop on the string. The + for this set up is I can hold as a deer walks on tru and still be able to see in low light due to the size of the peep. Can I miss, sure can as if I miss judge the distance, but for me I let them walk if over 25 yards...I also use to say for uphill or downhill they are not the same as your head position changes. If the angle is very bad up I add 5 yards, if down hill I take 5 yards off and this seems to work for me in the 3d's.

I would for years be out there on opening day in some cases with snow flying on the beaverkill. It must be youth losted as I now wait till the last week of APril by then the weather is warmer and first hatches on the water, also the water level in most winter would be lower from the snow melt off run... But not when you go toa pool on the beverkill and they stand arm to arm trying to get that fish to bite, across several poles.

New Yorks Latest Crossbow Legislation News
sweet old bill replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
How much $$$$ is being spent by the cross bow mfg to support having crossbow in the bow season ??? I do support allowing crossbow for use in all deer hunting season if the person is a senior (over 62 ) or has physical issue that will be signed off by a doctor Just like getting your special Parking permit. -
I would like to say that arrow speed does make for accuracy as well and a lot of times poor accuracy. Speed gives you a flatter shot process. I had a bow shop for years and see guys come in that wanted the fastest setup they could get out of a bow, they would buy and get the setup but then could not handle the speed. Why instead of missing by a inch they would sometimes miss by a foot. I always would suggest setting the bow up not for speed but for the most user friendly setup, then it would be up to the archer thru working on form. In a lot of cases the archers get over bowed, they try to handle 70 lbs and could do a lot better at 60 lbs peak draw weight. The other part is what called down range punch thru, if you shoot a very low weight arrow you get speed, but if the weight of the arrow is on the higher side you get punch thru. As told to me by a easton rep, it like I throw a pinpong ball at 300 ft per sec, or a baseball at 230 FPS. the 230 will push thru the target down range at a much higher % . Look at the trad archers and see if they want super light arrows or heavy arrows. You may have a higher arch in the arrow getting to the target but will have more punch. When you see the top shooters you will find they all have one thing in common they shoot a lot and if you talk to them they work on form, draw cycle and follow thru. Now at 70 years young I can only handle a bow in the to 60 lb range, but at 56 lbs the new bows seem to have the speed of the bows in the 90's that I use to shoot at 70 lbs peak weight. I also think that I have not had one arrow no got thru a deer I shot in a very long time, maybe it is due to I also do not shoot over 25 to 30 yards at the most. But it sure seems the new Bh's seems to fly thru a deer like a hot rod thru butter....

a wet spring last year, a number of yote having dinner in and around are fields. I went from seeing some days in year past 50 to 60 birds when the ston melted off the filed to just about 6 or 9 birds.

I was at shoot this past weekend and if you are looking for a mid price bow setup the PSE brute x, may be the one to try. I shot one on the practice range and it shot had no hand shock, arrows seemed to just fly out of the bow to the tgt spot. You can get a setup ready to shoot for just abpout $500 dollars, bow, sight, rest, quiver and he aid a discount on a 1/2 doz arrows as well.

no change in accuracy at all. Just shot this setup in Myrtle beach sand dune archers 2nd 3D shoot and had the best score I have ever shot, only two arrows out of 32 that were in the wound. Those were me, trying to move head as I released to see how well I shot. Nothing like me stupid and breaking your shot form.
