  1. I would have to say to track a deer to his bed and take a great buck with a trad bow (longbow or recurve ) now at 70 years young I still am in the hunt to do this
  2. My wife and I no longer give xmas to each other. So we still go big time for the kids and grand kids. My wife spent about 4 days cooking to get it all together. We have then in xmas eve and had a great time. We ask them all also not to give any items to us, just there love etc. On xmas day we traveled to MB SC, and got here onthe 12/26. The weather was great clear roads all the way, MB was sunny sky and 56 degrees, the hot tub ands heated pool were great, then Dinner at Ryan's. In the night we met several our friends. Now for 2012, if one of you all wan to stake out a good buck for me to get a shot at, please send photo's during the year to me. At 70 years young, each day in the woods is a plus.
  3. camo during bow only. then blaze orage wih the nuts I have around here. As a buddy said one time if they are waring camo during gun it so they can not be seen as they go on my land that is posted...
  4. welcome and for years I hunted off of Warner road...on the 7400 acreas of state land...
  5. div the peak bow weight at 28 inch by the peak bow weioght i.e if 45 you would 28 into 45 equal 1.6 lb per inch or due to the fact you draw only 26 inch on a 45 lb peak bow your actual draw would be 3.2 lbs lighter or a max 41.8 lbs....
  6. a old fart at 70 years young. I shoot the bow several times a week and go to a lot of the 3D's shoot in the area. MY shooting buddy just hit 75.... I walk to my ground blinds made out of natural material in back of the house. I just have 20+ acreas to hunt. I do no longer shoot doe's and or young bucks. I want a 6 point or more. I do find I no longer hunt as much as I did in my 20's. Maybe it was due to having only a day or two that I could hunt so I would stay out most of the day. I now walking a 1/2 hour from first light and come out in less than 3 hours and I walk in the PM at about a full 2 hours prior to dark. I have hunted over 85% of all days available so far. I saw a lot of doe's and some young bucks in the bow season and only one spike buck on opening day of gun. SO nothing down as yet. I did have a 6 point in the bow season in the first 15 minutes of first light, that when I drew on him I could see some small branches so I let down and let him walk. I have only lost one deer in 55 years of hunting and that was due to a poor shot due to a twig it hit that pushed the arrow to far back. I also have to say I I still love the sport but miss so much my past hunter buddies that passed on with cancer and also being a member of a local hunt club. It just is not fun going out there my myself. Maybe that why I like the 3D shoots so much, I get a chance to shoot with younger archers and love when a old fart can still do well. I went from shooting a 68 lb bow about 10 years ago to now the boiw is setup at 58 lbs and 29 inch draw and my traditional bow is setup at 50 lbs at 28 inch draw and my actual draw is 28 1/2. I also shoot at the house I have from when I had the archery shop a 3D setup to keep me shooting. I have 17 location and a total of 34 targets made up of deer, bear and a few turkey targets. I keep the stakes at less than 30 yards.
  7. I have to say it was better than most years for seeing the same deer most days ( 2 doe's and 3 fawns ) but nothing on the ground. I saw a total of 2 spike, 1 6 point and 1 10 point over the bow season. I had the spike in bow range under 25 yards and let them walk. I did see the 6 point but it was in brush and could not fnd a clear shot at him in first light. The big buck I saw from the house as he walked across the pasture across the road. He was in the center of the field so I see not way at hunter could get to him and it was in that lat light of the day when he came out. But what as drove me nuts is I had the spike at 20 feet on gun opening day and that is the only deer I have seen so far since the opening day and being retired I have been out there each day for about 6 hours, today I am looking at the rain adn will hunt from the armchair, fire is going in the pellet stove, coffee is on and to hell with it all. BUt all have a great thankgiving day and be safe out there.
  8. Just 1 inch of rain today in central NY ( Oneonta ) will hunt from the arm chair and look out the back windows....
  9. I saw more does this year, but no one shooter buck.
  10. I moved a stand a day prior to the opening day of gun season due to seeing a big buck in the area. On opening day of rain and snow at 230 pm the buck showed up and now is mounted on the living rooom wall. so move the stand...
  11. HUnter was glad to meet you and had fun shooting at the bow target with you.. Hope you do well.
  12. IN our area they are now calling for 5 to 9 inches of snow. That a lot at this time of year. I will go out this morning and see if the deer are feeding with the coming sonow they are calling to get really going by mid afternoon...
  13. in 4O Oneonta NY area it has been slow due to the weather . It seems as I go out for a few hours each day ( beingretired) the rain comes, I get wet and come home. I have seen a total of 9 does and fawns and one great looking buck ( 8 point) that was about 55 yards away and he winded me.
  14. I I use cider or apple juice in the final wash cycle of the old washing machine as I do the huntin togs. I put in about 6 oz. Not the total bottle or 1/2 gal of cider and or you may have issue with bee's. I then hang the togs outside to air dry. If you hold the togs up to your nose you get a hint of apples.
  15. I had in North Pharsalia on opening day almost the same thing occur. I heard a shot and turned and here come this big buck and he jumped a falled maple tree and stopped in brush so many branches, I could see his head and rack and not a opening to shoot at him. SO I let him walk.
  16. ABOUT EVERY 2 YEARS TO GET A DOE PERMIT NOW, NEXT YEAR IT MAY BE MORE LIKE 3 YEARS. i CAN THINK BACK TO MID 60'S WHEN YOU COULD GET A DOE PERMIT WAS TO HAVE 3 N THE PERMIT...
  17. The plan is on the dec site. Looks good for Oct 1 opening day for bow in the southern tier next year. ALso youth hun. If I read it right there will be more dollars for a crossbow stamp as they say in the document the crossbow can be used in all times when a bow can be used...No change to taking a buck or doe with your bow.
  18. wind and rain and saw nothing. WIll be out this morning agin...
  19. Up and ready to go. Slight wind and some showers in the area. I have shot the bow all year long about 2 hours a day for 4 days a week on average to make sure I am ready to go. This is like xmas morning as a kid, you would think a old fart (69) could stay in bed, but have been up since 4 am. good luck to all and hope you get the deer of your dreams and hunt safe.
  20. with the current compound bows and or even a trad bow in the 50 lb range I sure do not see deer jumping the string. The biggest issue is in the use of 5.5 feathers on some trad arrows. I do hear a slight noise as the arrow is released. But if anything it is so fast to the deer at 20 yards they do not get the chance to jump. I have had one look and then see the arrow in it side, then jump and run for about 55 yards and that was it.
  21. at 69 years young going on 70 ( Nov 5)_ I have all the hunting togs washed and in the outside garage, in totes with pine in the totes, bows are setup and ready, was shooting BH's yesterday and they are flying great. I also have the backpack packed, MY head lamp is a 4 AA light and have to recharge that friday night, even cleaned my coffee bottle with baking soda to make it scent free.I shot my 3D course yesterday and then walked and looked again at 3 ground blinds I have setup with camo burlap material and then brushed in with Pine. I see they sure look good and I am sure when I am in them the deer should not see me. I saw just one rub, and did see 1 doe and her fawn.
  22. Have a great season to all and hunt safe. If in tree stand make sure you are tied in.
  23. I have several delta and they seem to be not a bad target. But like all of them it sure depends on how many times you shoot them and if you put the arrows in just about the same hole. I have 34 targets setup on 20 acreas of land and I shoot them several times a week for me and several buddies etc. At the end of each year. I take the clear plastic calk and fill holes on the targets and repaint . I also have replacement centers if they go to bad. I have some deer or bear targets that now are over 15 years on the range. Still going
  24. On opening morning in our area if you had cox on the side of the cows, by 9am I was sure you would have a dead cow with the bullet hole dead center of the O...
  25. I do it about every 3 weeks as I shoot all the time. The key is working the wax into the string fibers.
