Must have been pretty cool to hear. I have yet to hear a grunt.

What kind of tree did this leaf come from?
ATbuckhunter replied to ATbuckhunter's topic in General Hunting
Never knew there was a species called chestnut oak but now that i see it, that's what it looks like. Makes sense because all the ridges and higher land is covered in white oaks, which is where i found it. -
With any mechanical broad head, there is a chance of some type of failure. I have shot 5 deer with the rage and they worked flawlessly but last week I shot a deer broadside right behind leg and I got only a couple inches of penetration. I only got one lung and i'm pretty sure I saw the deer again yesterday so its alive and doing alright but too bad it was the only deer I decided to shoot at this season so far. Ill still be shooting the rage because they are great heads but it did raise doubts for a few days.

So what tree did this leaf come from? I have a feeling that it's from an American chestnut which would be awesome because all the trees in that area were mature and no dead trees were there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

http://www.hudsonvalleysportsman.com/index.php/topic,14870.msg142273.html#msg142273 I cant tell you any information about the one killed in 06 (maybe a little earlier) by a car since I was told very fast and quite a few years ago.
-
Cant tell if that brow is an inch or not but its a good looking deer.

Welcome!

One was killed last November in Sullivan when it charged a young hunter. I remember a friend telling me that a moose was killed in 06 around neversink NY when I used to hunt there.
-
Congrats! Your hooked for life now!

Honestly I can only tell the difference between shoulder/heavybone and body shots. People have told me they can tell when they hit the backstrap but luckily I haven't hit that spot yet. I judge the shot more from where I think I hit it, the color of the blood and the smell of it.

They are scheduled to open up in Nassau county LI. Im hoping they wont scrap that idea but it would be a good investment for them.

Hopefully he sticks around till gun season! -
Very Interesting. I prefer Cabelas over bass pro but id love to see if they're going to have a big sale close to their closing. Good thing is they're opening a Bass Pro 30 min away from me.

Hopefully all works out for you!

Congrats! This will defiantly be a hunt that will be burned into his memory.

What are you using opening day SZ?

Thompson Center Icon in 30-06 using Black Hills Ammo with 180gr TSX bullets. -
Awesome job! You should be proud to have done such great work. I know I would have no problem paying for that quality in a mount.

Well me being a little cheap and not wanting to get rid of a sight that's working fine, I think im going to take 2 pins off and make it a 3 pin sight or make it a 20,30,40,50 and 60 yard sight. I wont be shooting at 60 yards but it wouldn't hurt to practice that far. Right now its 20,25,30,35 and 40 yards which can make the pins blurry at times
-
This is what I've been thinking. When ever I shoot at suffolk archers, my pins get a little blurry at some point. I'm either going to drop the pins to allow more of a sight picture or i'm getting a single pin.
-
Any of you have single pin sights? I'm thinking about switching to a single pin sight as i really don't shoot over 30 yards at this point. For those of you who have it or tried it, would you recommend i switch to one?
-
When I gun hunt, its usually no longer then 70 yards max when in the woods. Out in the open I can sometimes take up to 125 yard shots but even that's a bit of a stretch.
-
I actually shot my first deer with a bow over a decoy. They work well when you follow a few simple rules. The key to using a decoy is putting it upwind or crosswind of you and putting it around 20 yards in front of you. A deer will almost always want to go down wind of it to get a sniff of it. You also will want to have the decoy face you if its a buck or away from you if its a doe. Some deer will spook because of it and others wont care...it just depends on the deer.
-
Normally id get down after 15 min and take a look at the arrow to try to judge what kind of a shot it was. if i determined its a good shot, ill sneak out and bring some things back to the car and come back to track and drag it away.

Lots of deer in 3M. Just started hunting a property in 3M after 8 years and I saw 8 deer the first morning alone...almost more then i have on cam in 3J. Lots of orchards where I hunt so there'salways plenty of food around for them.
