How long was the pump tits up?? a foot is nothing, I've seen them filled to the top. -
Don't let them freeze with the hide on, it's a bear to skin then!!!

I'm not much for words in a time like this so I'll just repeat what others (and you) said that your father died doing what I assume was one of the most important things in his life other than his family, you are all truly blessed for that. No hospice, hospitals, nurses, doctors machines etc at his side. Just his two boys, comforting him in their efforts. I hope his passing was as quick as it seems, suffering little and worrying less. Now, just think of the good times, that's probably what he'd want.

I'll give ya a tip..................

This past weekend dad and I had some success.....Saturday night I shot a doe around 4:00 I figured I'd leave her be as she was down in sight and I'd wait on a buck. Well a snow squall came in and it snowed just about as hard as I seen in my life! At legal quitting time I readied my gear and lowered my gun down from the climber. There, just 30 yards away ran a buck. Not sure how big but probably no anything I would have shot anyway. Somehow he ghosted in in the mini blizzard. She isn't a huge doe but surely an adult that will eat good. Dad's story sure is interesting! On Sunday morning I texted dad and told him I'd stay in my climber until 10am. He got a late start as usual, no flies on a 9am start for him. Why rush it? He went to a enclosed stand we call the "condo".........4x8 IIRC with sliding windows and all the comforts of a Texas Blind. I called him around 10:15 and got no answer. I got back to the barn and figured I'd run a wheeler up to him and give him a lift back as I needed to retrieve a camera card near him anyway. Well I get to him and he has that "look" on his face. He quietly mouths the words "I shot a big buck 15 minutes ago!" but aren't sure if he's dead or not. I didn't have a gun or binos and that shouldn't have been a problem but darn near was..... As we crept closer to where he thought the buck was at the shot I looked in this big blow down and thought I saw brown. I grabbed dad's arm and stopped him. He had binos and I said take a look at that. Well he was nervous and didn't really know what I was pointing at and I just wasn't sure either. It was a brown area among all the gray/brown downed tree limbs and trunks from when the woods were logged a few years ago. I said oh well, lets go on....two steps later the brown spot disappears from sight. Dad was all bundled up and wearing his heavy boots etc (and he's 77 years old TODAY!!) so I said "gimme your gun"! He handed it to me and I sprinted (yea right) around the blow down, expecting to see the buck hauling azz down the steepest part of the woods and into a gully but nope, he laid down right where he had been standing the whole time, shot in the guts. I leveled the gun and flipped off the safety, put the crosshairs on the shoulder and pulled the trigger. CLICK! I cycled the bolt and clicked again, WTH? Earlier, when I first talked with him I had asked dad if he re-loaded after coming out of the condo and he said yes. I quickly opened the bolt again and this time I could see that the magazine was charged but the bolt was just riding over the next in line cartridge. I thumbed the cartridge forward a bit, closed the bolt then killed the beast witha .308 to the shoulder. When he was sitting there on his haunches, fully alert he had two, YES TWO horns on his head. When he died, both horns were laying in the snow, SHED!! Right then and there he decides to thumb his nose at us and shed his head gear. We couldn't believe it........ I have lots of trail cam video of that buck from the summer and my friend who owns the land had seen him numerous times all Fall. He almost made it through the season but then he bumbled into dad. Here is dad and his buck, holding the antlers on while resting them on the buck's head, right after the kill: Then back at the barn with just the horns: Hanging next to mine (certainly not a Ansel Adams worthy picture) in the barn: And a picture of the top of his head: Pretty good ending to the rifle season for us. I know dad was happy!

Purtty nipply here in 8N........looks like a south/south east wind and 23 degrees. I'll use the climber this morning, hopefully I don't freeze a digit while getting it set up. Killed a doe last night, I'll file a report later with a barn picture. Did I mention the blizzard????? -
Your taxi-dude does not need to keep those horns..........AFTER he capes him out, you can/should go and grab the horns and lower jaw. You can keep them and when he's ready to stuff 'em, take the rack back, Jack. Lots of guys do that, especially with a buck that will make a record book.

That looks great. Very nice buck too...... My first out of state hunt happened 34 years ago right now and it was in Texas also. Fond fond memories.

Congrats man! For your birthday, ask for a tripod. -
I know within FEET of where a Kershaw DWO I owned was lost. I lost it after gutting an archery killed buck back in the mid 80's. I looked and looked, unfortunately I didn't know anyone with a metal detector and it wasn't worth the scratch to buy one as the knife wasn't high end. Bummer though......

On top is my very favorite knife right now, it was made by Geno Denning for me and shortly after making it he quit building knives. It isn't the best for field dressing but is a tremendous do-anything knife that I take with me when it just feels right. Next knife down is a Buck 110 from the early 80's. Carried that many miles all over the USA and gutted antelope, mule deer, etc. Lots of deer here in NYS also. Turd from the top (NOT a turd knife at all) is a Kershaw Gentleman's Knife. Easily the BEST strictly gutting knife I have, it stays in a sheath that is welded (grin) to the belt on my King Of The Mountain pants. It's always there, ready to roll. Last but far from least is a Dozier Personal that was the first "semi" custom I bought. I got it from A G Russell probably 10+ years ago. It is great for gutting, fair for skinning and not too shabby for boning out a deer. Oh yea in case you're wondering, the top and bottom knives are fixed, the other two are folders. I sharpen all the time and especially after use. A few licks on the Spyderco Sharpmaker keeps things in tip top shape. Lots of other knives get used also but those are/were the MOST used. A bunch of great Gene Ingrams see use too. A Phil Wilson Smokes Creek or B&T were a desire that probably isn't in the cards anymore...........I'll survive without one I'm sure. Love me some knives, keep the pics coming!!

I have Barrett's also...........met with my family doctor today for a 6 month check up. I have to make an appointment to see the GI again, it's been a couple/few years and I need another scope. I've changed my diet some; cut back on junk food, fast food, coffee etc. I still have way too many bad habits though, the occasional cigar is at the top of the list. One BIGGIE I can add to this that you guys with bad reflux at night or anytime is to elevate your beds headboard. It's a pain in the ass to do but can make a big difference in your life. FYI......We has a gastroenterologist on board here as a member.
