  1. I've had them from 5 - 20+ feet up. back cover and visibility good then you're probably good.
  2. for shooting at a 3D target that's a deer that was going to be my recommendation. it won't be big but keep in mind even a mature buck doesn't stand that tall.
  3. your crippled with too long of a drawlength. I wouldn't buy anything else for it unless it's draw length mods even then you have to make sure they don't recommend a different string or cable length changing it that much. here's an ebay link to a bow that can be adjusted for draw without extra parts that's so far cheap. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Bear-Attitude-Bow-60-70-LB-Complete-PKG-Right-Hand-Realtree-Camo-/201648159138?hash=item2ef32ab9a2:g:axoAAOSwRoxXnM~B this or another bow on here from someone might be a good plan B. don't try to make a long draw work. it just won't.
  4. I'm guessing 2.5 - 3.5 but have reservations. you should know that aging characteristics that are typically thrown out there including in this thread are based on the buck having hard antlers and higher testosterone levels. they bulk up quite a bit and you can be a bit off aging deer in the summer. it's a respectable buck anywhere in the state.
  5. Sounds like you got it figured out. Does it say "Impact Archery" on the sight housing? if so, do you like that big bright pin? it obviously works so don't take that as me knocking your sight. I haven't actually shot one. I'm thinking it's 3x the diameter of the fiber I shoot and wrapped still.
  6. on some other properties I have a 3 yr old age minimum or I have to at least have reason to believe he's a 3.5+ yr old. on the family farm that's apart of the co-op I help manage it's a different world. I'll pick the top two bucks I've seen there in the area. they're usually the bigger antlers. definitely most dominant and oldest. i've only had it once where i've seen them both at the same time sizing each other up. they usually end up occupying different space on the farm. I always seem behind on trail cams and we're setup well to long range glass. I shot last years buck the way you describe with glass at distance followed by a bow and my climber. I don't live there anymore so I have to intentionally scout. I'm not getting sightings by just being around to see them, while doing whatever.
  7. only think I don't have is something to check spine and cut arrows. I've got everything else. I assume that chop saw is moving fast? the biggest problem I've seen with homemade jobs is they don't have enough speed to make a clean enough cut.
  8. the difference in deflection? as in different spines if you rotated the arrow shaft to a different position?
  9. I think they missed the point why it's concealed carry and you can get in trouble if you openly carry it. seeings how they were going for equivalence I would how many got cuffed for openly displaying their carried item. the blonde in the picture... looks like she's holding one that's extra unsafe, evil, black, and scary. all that said... this topic might be a tad taboo for a public forum and owner's intent. we'll see.
  10. Haha she's sponsored and set to be the image of the woman hunter by under armour (or was) and you didn't see that coming?
  11. HHA here on some hunting bows and a 3D bow. definitely like the adjustable collar to change brightness. you'll aim way more precisely with a single pin. down side is hunting a stand with multiple trails, especially intersecting. deer change trails at a moments notice and could be 10+ yards different than expected. you won't usually have time to adjust it. got to keep an eye on it too. don't practice at 30+ before your head out and then forget its not on say 20 yards. seeing more thru your sight window is a plus. no pins you're not using to get in the way. they work, as do multiple fixed pins. just use it and get used to it before hand.
  12. if they're that new - archery lessons with someone from a recommended bow shop that also bowhunts. people rarely do this but it'll make them more proficient than most. i'll agree with the good harness idea. night and day difference. you want them to use it 100% of the time. I'd include a life-line for their favorite stand if you get the harness on sale. goodie bag full of small things for gear that encourage them to use that make a difference - BCY X-wax, wind checker puff bottle, hand warmers, HS Scent-a-way 2-in-1 body soap and shampoo, trail markers, a cheap red LED head lamp, small relatively cheap led flashlight with white light (better for blood tracking than orange-ish or blue-ish light, I've got a couple Colemans), field points for their arrows. include a good informational book - like "Strategies for Whitetails", "Whitetails: From Ground to Gun", or "Whitetail Success".
  13. Much of my family rides dirt bikes. I don't anymore. as people get older they seem to transition to atv and sidebysides. Sanctioned races are were you tear it up. rides through others property is meant for things like community poker runs or memorial rides not on the pipe the whole time. there's riders and landowners both out there that don't get that but that's the way it needs to be.
  14. I definitely agree that main stream hunting shows have made people more concerned about the "end result" than appreciating or even caring about the "means to end". I've learned that even your favorite and tv show, that's an exception to all these learned lessons, can change sponsors like underwear. there's enough good stuff out there you can't afford and can't realistically put a fraction of it to good use.
  15. there's always a few things that you always read or hear about that you should do. however, those few things may or may not seem necessary to you and you've seemed to kill deer while ignoring them just fine. the point is those things keep coming up, because they're proven to work. stop ignoring those few things and it'll help! may mean a filled freezer every year, maybe big bucks on the wall, or maybe having more exciting encounters. do those things and your hunting will improve.
  16. we have an access road through the property we let people ride on through during the summer months to keep trail riding possible. getting harder and harder to find places to ride if your into that. everyone around knows the rules by now. I've watched a single atv in a group stray and drive through the field. his buddies all stopped, dragged him off the wheeler, and I could hear them yelling over the atv's still running. the day more people start to abuse the privilege it all stops and practically all the atv riders that go through the property know it. don't let it get out of hand. it's a hard battle to fight alone.
  17. check out thumbhole stocks in person for feel and fit before you get one. I've got one and don't really care for it. not boyd's but yea.
  18. I've done just about everything this year with the intent if it gets ahead we can freeze it. lots of different peppers, only three tomatoes but huge. lots of garden beans (go out every few days and fill a bucket). have onions that are just chillin' just shy of 60 of those. popping up. got to cover them more again. zucchini plants I planted 16 of those. I've pulled some plants that aren't doing as well. tomatoes consumed a couple too. stopped watering and no plant food for a while now. still pick a few every couple days. going to start blanching probably soon. until then eating a ton of stuff with veggies. ....for almost a couple months now. eating eggplant parm for lunch, to salad, to veggie spaghetti, casseroles, you name it. only really focused on peppers, onions, tomatoes, garden beans, and zucchini this year. no cucumbers this year.
  19. lies all across the board. even all these "reports" from Brazilian authorities with no actual video or pictures to prove anything. like Australia they did something stupid got themselves in trouble and Brazil trying to save face like their city isn't seeping with crime to add to the pieces of the puzzle. anyone who eludes to having to make up an elaborate story why you lost your wallet is retarded. he could easily have just said it was picked with no other answers. until I see actual proof everyone is guilty. rio and all the crime issues that have happened I'm leaning toward home team with them just doing something mildly stupid and the rest blown up.
  20. depends on a lot. if it's a plot enroute to a bigger destination plot the deer will just graze and pass on through. I'd be at the edge as long as I had the cover in the tree and a good back ground to break up my outline. otherwise I think staying off the edge is good. don't want to be right out there for all the deer to see while they hangout and feed until after dark. I hope you get to the stand and leave it with deer remaining in the plot in that case.
  21. just think about the process and what's required of you to make it help. disconnect yourself from the fact its a deer and will be one of your limited opportunities. focus on the means to the end and not the end result or what could go wrong. once the arrow has been sent and it's a dead deer running you can process it all as you just took a deer, letting the flood gates of emotion open wide. works for me. I've been completely composed like a machine to get it done and then right after that so messed up I'm shaking, called a house number asking if someone they were at the house, and then dropped the cell phone out of the tree.
  22. try not to take this as a glib reply but I see the use of crossbows as an irrelevant fart down wind until DEC can regulate them like normal archery equipment. I hope the soap box you use here all the time is seen by legislators. it'd be a shame otherwise.
