  1. I wouldn't feed any of those to my dog, and she'd eat shoes if given the chance...... TOP'S grocery has moved to town downstate and I can't get the footlongs but they do stock the Sahlen's.....YUM! I still go to Ted's when I'm back visiting family, but its great to get a proper hotdog here now. Sabretts......Uhhhhh.....disgusting.
  2. I vowed I'd never bring anything home from hunts anymore and caved as soon as things started hitting the salt. Slow gov't approval in Zimbabwe, lost wire transfer funds for shipping, misque by airlines, PIA US Fish & Wildlife hold, FEDEX not picking up crate...... This wasn't the fastest turn around at 8 months (hunt was last Oct); but at least no bugs; so-so field boil on plains game.....But didn't over boil the Buffalo or Hyena (YES!).....and I have shot LOTS of Baboons and finally got a skull home! Worth it? Probably not. But I'm still pretty excited anyway. These are covered in Sevin dust and need to be finished simmered, degreased, and bleached yet; normally all this the hunter never sees and crate goes strait to taxidermist; but I like doing the skull work and the Buffalo is going to be an interesting project due to size. Salted Hyena, Bushbuck and Impala skins will go to taxidermist and off to tannery. Not sure what I'll mount, see how skins do first. Lens cap din't retract proper, but gives some of a idea of scale for skull. Lots of canine teeth Washed up a bit
  3. Does this mean you'll be supplying entertainment up on stage too? I'm in anyway. #1 restaurant in East Berne according to Tripadvisor.....fancy. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g47620-d7709831-Reviews-Maple_on_the_Lake-East_Berne_New_York.html Like I have said on these meeting deals in the past....just pick a date, either you can make it or not. But trying to find a consensus is like herding cats if you want to make everyone happy. JMHO.
  4. Sometimes its nice to find out you're not the only one. Like to do a little salt water that I have never messed with before and some big fresh water species. So been looking at heavier tackle.... At one point was tying #22 and 24 trico's for a shop in Pa.; had some 10/0 2x circle hooks come today. You could pass those flies through the eye. Have some 20/0 coming that is req'd for a trip. Just a whole other world.... 250lb rated leader and 100lb braid for mainlines.....maybe cheaper to go back cape buffalo hunting after all.
  5. They make a nice little cushion that'll clip over your trigger guard to stop that hit on middle finger. Competition shotgun and big bore double rifle shooters use them. On topic; I have never drawn blood, but have taken two shots prone laying downhill with feet above my head shooting across a valley and both times my glasses took a wack enough to let me know not to do that again. Both times ran out of cover and both times did kill what I was after. Missed a shot like that too on a once in a lifetime trophy @300 yds and still bugs me and can't figure how I missed albeit a smallish target. And of course didn't get wacked at all at that time. I would have hit myself in the face with a hammer if I would have connected with the shot as fair trade. Shoulda spent more time creeping for a better set up. As it was slithered and rolled 400yds thru tick infested needle covered sour grass and was a mess, gave the blood anyway.
  6. Several factory and custom muzzleloaders both blackpowder and smokeless based on bolt actions. Remington 700 is very popular (I have both 209 or #11 ignition for my factory M700 blackpowder)
  7. A good resource is to look at interactive tax maps by county when looking for property owners. http://gis.greenegovernment.com/giswebmap/ You can click on each property and see who owns it and the address where tax bill is sent. Unfortunate looking for this water it seems to be all private land owners and I'd guess one has an exclusive agreement for municipality to use a right of way when needed, looks like they use that 2 track coming from south. Edit: ^^^Sorry, thought you were talking about the one in Climax..... The one in Medway has municiple owned frontage on Jennings and 54. (Some years ago I built a timberframe house in that area and fished some private ponds)
  8. What? Thought you lived upstairs? One time on a job we were talking about food at lunch time and I wanted a Ted's hotdog and Duff's wings. Decided that I could have both for dinner if I left right then; so put the dog in the truck and drove the 6 hrs to get both and they were fantastic. Not sure its worth the trip just for that nowadays; but if I visit family will see how dates line up.
  9. There's just a mention here of just a sentence, but I had a PDF of the full story the was on line. I'll find it, it was originally on a shooting forum that no longer exists. https://www.tactical-life.com/lifestyle/tactics/basics-of-the-one-mile-shot/
  10. See the pile of weeds hanging from the rod on the right? That's what I'm best at catching.
  11. I had this in a file but can't find it right now..... But there was a Union soldier who killed a Confederate officer with a 50 cal muzzleloader at near a mile in the Civil War. Sent a surveyor to confirm distance too. My internet sucks today but should find in a search.
  12. LOL....maybe I should use "typical for the sport"; but in that world typical ain't exactly grandpa's deer rifle he never missed with.
  13. From limited real experience, but just shooting as a guest at Forbes and Williamsport; If your drop numbers are good, I think the math seems right. But you should be able to confirm that if you have a set up range to 600 yds. Those guys got pretty serious with weather for the day when shooting at 1000. That and being super anal about loads. You need a official qualification for joining those clubs; but some guys have started a new facility closer to me and its got me interested at stretching a few rifles out to maybe 6. They're trying right now to get approval for 1 mile.18" @1mi= about 1 moa and thats a poke to be consistent at that range with average equipment.
  14. First you have to get the terminology right. The fancy name for a stand built in a tree is "machan" ( ma- shaaan); originally used in India for Tiger and Leopard but the term is frequently used now especially in Central Africa/Zambia/ some in Zimbabwe) but it sounds much cooler than platform in a tree. I did bring a Lone Wolf to a guy on another forum from States, but many habitats struggle to find good climbing trees; he had a good area and the only animal I have taken is a female Impala with his bow I borrowed. Fun 2 day/overnight hunt with him, hes a free lance PH in SA. Box blinds and pit blinds are the norm; but I hate stand hunting and would give it a go on foot with a bow. Been LOTS of occasions to take game on foot given the right species, property, and expectations due to time. Right now I'm not sure when headed back, I have a crate sitting at JFK that has been stuck at USF&W for almost 3 weeks(!!) and a pile of skins from 2016 sitting at my taxidermists and the bills that follow. LOL But save your pennies and by the time your ready I'm sure something can be worked out. I would have jumped on a recent Cape Buffalo offer for an amazing price in Zimbabwe this fall; but I'm committed to fishing the Amazon and can't afford both. Unless I sell my car..... Which is an extra vehicle for me.... Hmmmmm always possibilities my friend, always possibilities.
  15. .Thanks. Honest if the trail heads were a touch closer, I'd spend more time up there. About 3 1/2 hrs to either Keene Valley or Flowed Lands side of things; makes day hikes a PIA with driving.
  16. I think have about a dozen left. Seymour/Sewards/Santanonis/Wright/Haystack......I'd have to think about it some. But I just messed around when I felt like it over a couple summers, maybe someday I'll finish it; other priorities came about(mostly work and hunting trips). Now I'm too outta shape. LOL
  17. Getting close now! I'm about stalled out with these 4 on my list too. Good the knee is recovering, that'll keep you in the game.
  18. Eating not an issue, not toxic, just don't derive any nutrient value. When raising beef, my hay guy was growing test plots for a lignin research program on different hay mixes. After sampling, he would sell the rest and I'd buy a tractor trailer load of 43 big squares at a time from him.
  19. Actually they can EAT stems but lignin associated with fiberous stems is a hugely researched topic in ruminants. Certain lignins degrade the digestive process; google up lignin in ruminants.
  20. Better vet that outfitter real good too..... http://www.kansas.com/sports/outdoors/article198543619.html
  21. Enjoyed his No Reservations show. Shame.
  22. I shot this one in a wooded area/transition between fields, I hunt the edges as these are not cut hay fields on state land. Actually had the camera out as I have a new hobby and was taking pics of butterflies and moths to identify, so there ya go. I've had it before too, same observation, tastes fine but chewy. So it happened to come up in conversation as I gave this same guy part of a deer and his stew was fantastic he gave me; so he said he'd cook up a chuck' if I had a head shot. Looking forward to trying his results.
  23. Nothing special, CZ "Trainer" 22LR, I like the long barrel as it shoots quiet. I have several CZ 452's and they shoot very well. Balance is similar to another favorite centerfire rifle so I have the same scope on both, triggers are close too. Cheap practice. Found a good enclave of red squirrel too, but didn't get a good position and the bugs were tough to sit near a wet area today.
  24. Things are picking up here, took a long walk and got 2 and know where to go back again with a centerfire for a bit more punch at distance. I'll give a report but this one is headed to a pot, neighbor claims he can cook them up. We'll see. LOL
