  1. That's crazy. Long Island is frustrating. Lots of deer. But, access to hunting land is a pain.
  2. I agree that nothing will totally eliminate human scent. Having said that, I try to do everything I can to practice scent control. I just bought the scent crusher roller bag. it just arrived this week and I haven't had a chance to take it out of the box. I do plan to use it this coming weekend.
  3. I have those things and never knew that the ramrod gets pushed right through the tube. Good to know. Thanks.
  4. I don't know what to say. But, I'd also say that responses on this thread suggesting that another kid at school should attack the kid in the video, or calling him names, don't exactly reflect well here either.
  5. Not justifying anything in this video. But, here on Long island, some of the 'hunting' is in very residential areas and I can understand why people might not like the idea of it happening right where they live. As someone else mentioned, a struck deer is gonna run and could very likely wind up in someone else's yard, or pool, or driveway. And, the deer are not exactly 'wild'- they live in these residential areas and are not weary of people. Not the kind of 'hunting' that I'm interested in.
  6. First Light, do you know the person who posted the video? I'm assuming it was from Oakdale?
  7. holy crap. I'm pretty sure I know that guy.
  8. Their stock price has gained since they made this change.
  9. Look at the size of that deer's head.
  10. Muzzle loaders are a lot of fun. But, you might want to rethink the title of this thread.
  11. Those look great. I tie my own trout flies. Nothing better than catching a fish on a fly that you tied yourself. #12 Hares Ear has always been my go-to.
  12. I think you'll have no problem with finding people interested.
  13. OK, it will be interesting to watch. But, if the ammo bans have been incrementally increasing in recent years, you should expect an uptick in the decline in hunters if your argument is accurate. But, in fact, there has been a slower decline in license sales- an 8% decline in the years between 2010-2018 vs. a 28% decline in the years 1970-1979.
  14. It's also interesting that 2018 had the highest number of lifetime licenses sold for period covered by your statistics. That number tells me that there are more young people getting into hunting today than there were a few years ago. As you said, the numbers don't lie.
  15. Airedale, the ban just went into effect. The trends that you're sighting have been going on for years- decades. And there's been no uptick in the decline in the years since the ban was announced. The 2019 number is probably an outlier as the big game season is still a few months away and perhaps many hunters buy their licenses at the last minute. it's the whole, 'correlation does not establish causation' thing. Hunting has been in decline in CA for far longer than this proposed ban has been in effect.
  16. Nobody will quit hunting over this. Even if you did a ton of hunting for all kinds of game, the number of rounds fired in the field would still amount to a relatively small financial impact. The banning of lead for waterfowl hunting has a much greater impact because bird hunters usually fire a lot more shots in a day of hunting. This article is the exact same as the dozens that were written when California first passed the bill a few years ago. It's reactionary nonsense.

    9/11

I was at work in a hospital on the upper east side of NYC. Like every other hospital in the city and surrounding area, we quickly mobilized in anticipation of mass casualties. It was heartbreaking as the day went on to realize that there weren't any coming in as there were few survivors.
  18. I switched to copper for deer hunting a few years ago. Between the cost of sighting in my gun each year and the few rounds I might fire in the woods during the season, the total impact of the switch costs me about $15 per year.

    Snow in 4f

My place is in 4F also. I agree with NYBowhunter. Beautiful area. Great hunting. What area are you looking at?
  20. I drive through there on the way to my place. Lot of turkeys in those fields between Deposit and Masonville.
  21. Well placed ladder stand in that photo.
  22. I've done that also. it's a giant mess, but a lot of fun and you get great fresh tomatoes to use all year long. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine who has a lot of friends in the food business, had 13 cases of tomatoes delivered to my house along with all of the necessary equipment. We spent an entire Saturday blanching, grinding, and jarring tomatoes.
  23. i do pickle slices for burgers as well as jalapenos. I usually do a batch every other summer and the supply lasts about two years. I do jam every summer also. Jarred nine pints of raspberry jam a few weeks ago.
  24. I have a TC Omega 50 cal with the thumbhole stock and a scope on it. I love it. Great shooting gun as far as I’m concerned. It was a package deal from Cabela’s a few years ago and I think it cost around $500.
