Recovery rate with your bow (poll, but names not public)
ApexerER replied to Core's topic in Bow Hunting
This is my fourth season bow hunting. As much as I wish I started it a long time ago it is probably better that I didn't. I wouldn't have had the patience for it and much like Wooly I would have been flinging arrows I had no business flinging. I have killed and recovered two deer with my bow but I lost the first one I ever shot at and it was a huge learning experience. That first deer everything was like a blur...I had no idea where I hit it, I released the arrow and watched the deer run off 30 yds and stand there...then walk away normally. I don't remember anything about the shot...it all happened so fast. I had blood at the hit site and small pool where she stopped and stood. Nothing after that....Me and several buddies did grid searches for hours never finding another drop of blood. It still bothers me but it made me slow down and try and think about every detail in my shot. Hopefully my recovery rate will continue to grow from here and hopefully that deer lived. -
Who's taking a youth gun hunting this weekend for youth season?
ApexerER replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Deer Hunting
Good luck this weekend. I'll be rooting for you! -
I always think about making a path to my stand. But I don't know if I want a telegraph pointing people right to my stand and trail camera's. I lease land with a few buddies and none of us live there. There are always 4 wheelers trespassing and every now and then a stand disappears. Anybody could hunt there all week long and we would have no idea....

How did you know that cat was telling you to go back to bed? Maybe it was saying get your a$$ out there, there is a big buck by your stand.....Hope your back feels better soon!

HERE COMES THE GUN LAWS
ApexerER replied to ryan's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I don't think we need any more gun laws. The laws are ridiculous! As I am typing this my daughters school is on lockdown because apparently someone brought a (inoperable) gun into the High School. Here is a statement from their website: At the beginning of the school day the High School administration was made aware via social media of a potential weapon being brought to campus. At 8:15 am the High School and Middle School buildings were placed in Lock Down, authorities were notified and the students associated with the threat were located and detained. A weapon was located and confiscated. It was inoperable and there was no ammunition found on school premises. The Saratoga County Sheriff is completing the investigation, the Lock Down is being lifted and schools will follow the regular schedule for the remainder of the day. Now, as soon as I heard this I was obviously sick to my stomach and had no idea what was going on...Just that there was a gun and the school was on lockdown. Could this have just as easily been an operable gun and an active shooter situation. Yes and the thought of that scares the shit out of me. But what law are we going to pass that is going to stop this. Short of banning all guns and having search teams go into law abiding citizens houses looking for firearms. I don't know what the answers are but this world is becoming a damn scary place. I don't know what the hell could poses someone to do what happened in Vegas and I don't know how you stop it. I am all for schools having armed security because I firmly believe the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with one. -
Only have been able to get out on Sunday for a morning sit. It was a great morning. Saw a shooter buck on the hoof. 10 minutes after seeing him I had a deer coming in from the same direction and of course I was assuming it was the shooter so my blood was pumping and my knees were knocking which is always awesome with my bow in hand. Turned out to be a 3 pt and I got to watch him for 10 or 15 minutes. Had a BB buck come through and very large lone doe. Thought it was odd that she was all alone but I got a good look at her head multiply times and she was definitely a doe. It was a great morning in the woods and I can't wait for this weekend!

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

Core, I love my double ladder stand but I think one of the guys on our property has the same walmart ladder stand you are describing and it is awful. Like Cabin Fever says, you can get a ladder stand with a flip up seat and a platform that goes all the way back to the tree so you can stand and lean against the tree. I leave my shooting rail down and every August I wrap it with that camo wrap that you can buy anywhere and zip tie it all around....conceals movement etc. Its great...Ladderstands can be awesome but you get what you pay for...

Well.. I'm going to call it a morning at 11am for family and football. Great morning....saw a shooter...a 3 pt..a BB and a lone big doe that I am surprised was alone. 3pt only deer in my bow range. Good luck everyone!

Great morning...saw a beautiful buck 40-50 Yds crossing behind me. Couldn't count points but the rack was very nice. Then at 8 I catch movement again and see the deer coming back. My heart was racing and I'm thinking wow...this is going to happen this early..then as he gets closer I see it's a little 3 or so I stopped shaking and took some pics/video

Great to be out. Been in the stand since 6. Perfect morning but nothing moving. Good luck everyone!

Looks like you have several beauties.....Good luck this season!

This was a great post! Its funny how that happens....All the anticipation, work leading up etc....Then you get in your stand....On high alert that first hour, maybe two....Every sound you hear is the big one..you are sure of it....After two hours....well i'll look at my phone....Text the wife...tell her I haven't seen a thing...Maybe start playing a game....4 hours later...Dang it...I knew I should have set up in the such and such stand.....hour 5...is it lunch time yet....lol

I have never felt the need to do any work to any of my guns except take them apart and clean them. I have mounted scopes etc but always with a rail already on the rifle or it was tapped for a rail. I have never done anything to my bow or crossbow. I assume when the time comes I will figure it out because I never have a good experience with others messing with anything I own/need done.

No where near as often as I would like....

I just want to enjoy the days with my hunting buddies.....I would love to see two bucks sparring...I have never seen that or even heard it before...

A new experience... someone took my trail cam.
ApexerER replied to OldNewbie's topic in Deer Hunting
You guys that place your camera's 10'-12' high. What do you do? Carry a ladder with you to check your camera? That seems like a huge PIA -
Thanks for sharing the pics....Good luck this season....

Thank you for the ideas.....I never thought to be more specific and say this is going to be placed on pavement. When I had my drive way paved I had it paved up along the house for parking the boat in the summer and snowmobile trailer in the winter....I could probably anchor the outside section like some of you have suggested but no the inside section...

Ok, so I am an idiot....I purchased a canopy/carport from harbor freight. I read about it online...Reviews were good etc. Harbor Freight didn't have one on the floor so I asked for one and the brought it out of the back. I never paid a whole lot of attention to the box. I just paid for it and threw it in my truck. Well online it says that it is 9' 6" high and it is in the center...But the sides are 6' 6" and my boat won't fit under 6' 6" so I have been trying to come up with ideas. All I can come up with is to take 5 gallon buckets, drill a hole it and place a bolt through so it is sticking out from the bottom of the bucket. Then turn them over and fill them with cement. Then when the cement is dry I can turn the buckets upside down and bolt the legs to the bottom of the buckets increasing the height by the size of the bucket and the weight should be enough to keep the canopy from flying away in the wind....Any other ideas?
