  1. The e collar will stop her in her tracks. My Weimaraner was trained with it and it is a very effective training tool. I give him the command "OFF" whenever he shows an interest in something that he shouldn't.
  2. Scale. You can blast it off with a garden hose. But a better solution would be to use insecticidal soap. You can also treat with horticultural oil at a very low rate. Less than 2%.
  3. Uncle NIcky is correct. They are also considered a weed type tree, as they can usually grow anywhere and are very hard to kill. If they are cut down to a stump, they will grow back. I had one on my front lawn and the deer loved the berries so much that I would often see them having a mid day snack.
  4. This birth control plan has been tried before and was unsuccessful IIRC somewhere upstate. All it is going to do is attract more bucks to the island. It will also prolong the rut. What a waste of time and money.
  5. I'm not from the area, but I have fished the south end of Cayuga lake with good results from shore. It's right off of 13 in Ithaca. There are a couple of parks there with access. I'm sure there may be better spots around but I would think it would be a good place to start.
  6. I have seen them out for a swim many times here on Long Island in the great South Bay, montauk, and orient point. Just last week I saw 2 swimming from shelter island to northaven near the south ferry with a screaming tide. They are excellent swimmers.
  7. I agree with G-Man, it does look like an ironwood tree. But I doubt it was the work of a woodpecker. They usually peck dead trees or branches looking for insects. More likely the damage was done by a borer, which is an insect that bores itself into the tree. A bird called a sapsucker could also do that, but they usually make several holes in a line in one area.
  8. I don't think anyone could be worse than who we have now. I wouldn't call him an exterminator. He will just relocate them to some far away land. Much like what Guiliani did to all of the homeless in NYC. ^^This! That is why they are all crapping their pants.

    Long Island

I went out Sat morn in the blizzard on private land, after a failed attempt at goose hunting. Still hunted along the bluffs where there was a lull in the wind. Deer where on there feet milling around. Got within 40 yds and took the biggest doe. I saw about 20 in all. That was my 4th doe for the year, all taken in Jan.
  11. I thought it was 125 net, not gross.
  12. I've been thinking of getting a covert with a data plan. With these new apps available, are you able to track your cam yet in case it gets stolen? Like you can with an iPhone?
  13. 1187 for me as well. Not sure about the new ones, but mine is about 25 years old has been flawless. If I were to get another, it would be a used 1187 3 1/2".
  14. Got a late start Wed evening. Didn't get set up until almost 3:30. No worries though as it is a last light spot. I took 2 healthy does just after 4pm. Hopefully going to try to get out again this evening. I will be out all day Sunday for the gun opener here on the island. Time to do my community service.
  15. 11 days until gun season opens on LI 39 more days of bow season on LI We are in the 7th inning stretch down here
  16. Look like you had a great time Steve. Glad to see things are going well for you.
  17. My guess would be with the mild weather that we had all season, breeding was limited to only night time activity. Even then it was not getting too cold during those hours, resulting in some does going into estrus and not getting bred because lack of movement due to warm temps. The second rut always happens, but this year there are more does to be bred that were missed the first time around. And now with the cold weather, it is taking place during the day as well.
  18. Very nice. I've always been a proponent of heavy arrows and thunderheads for great penetration. I used to shoot 125's for years with 2317's. I now shoot 100gr thunderheads with 2315 aluminum. Only a slightly lighter combo, but still much heavier than even the heaviest carbon arrows. On a perfect double lung shot, even the lightest combo will pass through, but when your arrow misses its mark by even an inch or 2, it sure is nice knowing that the heavier combo with more kinetic energy will do its job and still leave you with an entrance and an exit hole.
  19. I have an Impact Archery Cosmic single pin for several years now. I love it. It is very bright and you can set the pin to be vertical or horizontal.
  20. Even though this is a Barnes shotgun slug, I believe the rifle rounds perform the same way. 100% weight retention and entrance and exit holes are something else.
  21. A friend of mine texted me this pic that a co-worker shot earlier this week. I cropped the pic because I'm not so sure he wants his face on the internet. So I guess there are at least a few big white deer running around.
  22. I hunt on the border between of 8s and 7r for the last 15 years or so. When I started hunting there, you would see hunting camps parked all over on the sides of the roads everywhere. Usually with several trucks at each location. It was like a tailgate party with banners hanging welcoming hunters. We always stayed at a local hotel. The last couple of years, they all suddenly disappeared. We couldn't figure out what happened. I searched online for camping regs on state lands, and I noticed that camping is prohibited within 150' of roads and trails, unless it is in a designated area. Also camping for more that 3 days requires a permit. I'm not sure if those rules where always there or not, but for everyone to suddenly stop within a year or two, they must've started to crack down and enforce the regs for the campers. I believe that this has really caused the largest reduction of hunters on the state land that I hunt on.
  23. Probably just got done breeding her. I know I do the same thing.
