  1. Nice pic's and cool that you can call.....without a call!
  2. Very cool hobby! Looks like you have everything set up nicely too. Have fun and keep us posted on your progress!
  3. I'm not too good at judging photo's but here it is anyway. Three year old. Because he seems a bit broader in the lower neck and chest area than a two year old. It's just a guess and I'm wrong more often than right! Beautiful buck, whatever age he is.
  4. Welcome! Glad you decided to stop by. Got lots of great folks here, who are great at sharing a variety of hunting and outdoor knowledge and stories. Just pull up a seat and join in anytime!
  5. Always found it funny. When deer hunting, there would be half a dozen squirrels running around a spot. Then you go out to hunt the squirrels, and don't even see one! But see a bunch of deer! What's up with that?
  6. I think any improvements you make, will only benefit you. For a little time and money, what have you got to lose. Go for it!
  7. It's our rookie season. We will learn more each time out. We have a few different properties, time, and a few tricks of our own to throw back at them. And I love a good challenge!
  8. Calling in five on our first set was a cool surprise for a couple of rookies. But we have a bunch of coyotes on this property. And they have never been called to, that we know of. So each time we go, they will be harder to get, as I'm sure they will learn the game quicker than we will. I'm in no way under estimating their intelligence. That being said, I'm looking forward to learning each time we go out, to get better as well. We will constantly change locations and set ups along with calling sequences. Times of day and night. And it was just plain fun!!! We are using our deer rifles for now. And I shot this one with a Nosler BT. I do have a box of a solid copper Hornady XXT? (Not sure if that is right.) That may not tear them up so much. If we keep having fun doing this, I see a 243 or 223 in the near future. We also have shotguns with buckshot or turkey loads if we get them in close enough. Our main goal is to just reduce their numbers, while getting a bit of exercise for a couple of older guys, while having fun! And thanks again to all who responded!
  9. Both. Over 500 acres and each year we see more coyotes and less deer. Early this year my buddy shot a buck, wasn't sure of the shot so gave him a little time. Three hours later when we recovered the deer, half his hindquarters were eaten! That's when we decided, that after the season we were going to learn to call, and have someone start trapping the property. We also have a few other properties to hunt coyotes lined up, as well as my 50 acre lake property. Not sure if it will make a big difference, but it beats doing nothing. We are over run with them at this time. So it can't hurt to reduce their numbers all we can. There are just too many of them.
  10. Panthers all the way! Got all aspects of the game working right now. And Arizona looked terrible today. Home field through to the Super Bowl. This is their year!
  11. Used to do a lot of tournament bass fishing. Cut back the last few years. Going to step it up quite a bit this year. See how it goes. Kinda miss the challenges, competition, and the guy's.
  12. We haven't gone in a few years. Very few good deals and a lot of overpriced stuff. But still something to do if you don't have anything else going on.
  13. I've met a couple members. Talked to a few others. All good guy's. A capital region or hilltowns get together would be cool.
  14. In this case, bigger is always better! Grind on!
  15. Most times, I can keep my cool and let things go. But if it were me, this would not be one of those times. When someone trys to hurt me or my family, nothing will stop me from becoming someone's worst nightmare.
  16. Thanks everyone! Still got a LOT to learn, but boy was it exciting and probably the most fun I've had with my clothes on, in a long time! lol..... Thanks Paula, I'm getting there.
  17. Count me in . Called in my first today! Won't be the last.
  18. I've been a bit under the weather during the holidays. So today was the first day out to try and call in my first coyote. We have shot quite a few over the years by chance encounters, while deer hunting. But my buddy and I decided to try calling them at the end of deer season. Since then I pick up an E- caller a couple of mouth calls, a decoy and started practicing, while driving the Mrs. nuts! I got to the farm property about 8 o'clock, helped my buddy with some chores and we headed to some large fields, above a thick, swampy area, where a number of large round hay bales are scattered. We set up in a hedgerow with a bale in front of us about 10 yards. Put the Johnny Stewart E-caller on top and the Lil Critter decoy in front. He covered left of the bale and I the right. I called with the e-caller, distressed rabbit first for about 5 minutes. But with a 15mph crosswind, I didn't think they could hear it in the tick stuff 100 yards away. So I gave a few calls on my flex tone mouth call. I look to my right and two coyotes ran out of the woodlot to our right on the next field over. Told my buddy, got two over here and he said got three over here! His was to our front at 100 yards, mine to the right front at 85 yards in the hedgerow. OK on three we shoot! He missed his, I rolled mine! We are hooked now! Can't wait for next weekend to get out again!
  19. Happy Birthday!! Hope your special day is spent with the ones you love!, doing what you love to do!! Enjoy your day!!
  20. Perhaps, if the land is cheap enough, it may be worth the $$$ to pay a neighboring land ownerowner, for a legal right of way. Make them an offer they can't refuse!
  21. A deer..... A hunter..... A deep dark woods..... Come together in a place..... Called..... The twilight zone..... Just had to do that! Perhaps an unseen twig or some other obstruction was the cause of the off target shots. And I have seen myself, where deer just stand there, seemingly unaffected by a shot, on more than a couple occasions.
  22. Congratulations! May he grow strong, straight and smart. And love hunting with his Dad.

    Cool Stuff

I don't think that too many of the well known hunting and shooting personality's of today. Would be so gracious, as to hand type or sign anything. About twenty five years ago, I met Peter Fuduccia at an outdoors show. He was very laid back and talked hunting with me for quite a while. He talked to me as a fellow hunter and not as a so called expert. Not sure what became of him. Have not heard his name in a while now.
  24. A Happy, Healthy, Hunting, New Year to one and all!
