Large food plot suggestions.
thphtm replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
If you clear everything out say good by to the deer this time of the year. By me the first thing they were hitting were the little 1' to 3' young trees. Now they are behind the house every day eating Clover .Yesterday they were all around the house for 4 hours eating every bit they could find. -
The Weather Is Going To Change, The deer have been in the back yard for the past hour chopping away at the clover.

If you are going to fence the whole area with chicken wire it might help a little. Buy something as the tube type trunk protectors , not just for the deer but also the little fury creatures the like to chew on the bark. Buy a roll of 2'x3' or 4" x4" wire fencing and make rings to go 2' at least dia. to go around the trunks and use rebar to hold them in place. Deer do stand on there hind legs to eat the young branches and the fruit.

When to expect regeneration regrowth after logging
thphtm replied to agross's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
After they logged by me in 2 years there were many wild blackberry plants and other young trees that sprouted up , the deer, bears and other wildlife loved it, once the young trees reached 5' to 6' there were not that many coming around, they seemed to like the 1' to 2' high growth the best. If you plant young pine trees , put some chicken wire around them the deer like to brouse on them also, the same goes for hemlocks . -
Yep, Take an extra pair of sock liners and good wool socks. Put them on when you are ready to sit for a period of time. If you want to spend the money these are well wort it -http://www.wiggys.com/footwear/socks-liners/. Jerry's products are expensive but they keep you warm. By the way he comes from from NY .

My waterproof boots...aren't.
thphtm replied to Core's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
My Danner leather boots are 30 years old and my Sorel are 40+ years old nither have leaked or let me down. Every year before hunting season I get out the hair dryer and warm the leather up and then take a paint brush full of sno seal and put a good coat on them ,warm them up again with the dryer and wipe off the excess. The only rubber boots I wear are my hip boots when I go fishing. -

As others have said get some CNC training. You now have an advantage over someone Just out of School. You have hands on experiance in machining. I was a machinist for over 30+ years when the company I worked for decided to get a CNC Lathe and A CNC Mill. At that time 3 axis. I new nothing about and did not own a computer, they sent us to school on both machines. From then on I set up , proghramed and ran both machines + some of the old manual machinery.

take the screws out 1 at a time, clean with acetone and put a light coat of loctite Blue on the threads put screws back snug/finger tight do not over tighten them. The scope is anodized the rust from the mounts should just wipe off.

Last one I buit quite a few years ago I put a 2"x6" on each side of the limbs and bolted them together with threaded rod 3/8" they never moved in 10 years used 2" x 6" planks to stand on also. wear a safety harness and or put a railing all the way around, they get Slippery in the rain and snow.

I hit one 6 years ago and thought the same thing. I found it the next morning 75 yards up on the side of a hill next to where I shot it.

Is there really such thing as a brush caliber?
thphtm replied to 10point's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Bullets that do not get deflected that easy by hitting brush as a 12 gauge slug, 44 mag. , 35 rem. So they say but they all can get deflected a bit. -
Yep, been doing this for the past 50+ years

The last time I hunted out of my natural ground blinds ( old tree trunks piled 4' high ) there were 7 deer 200 ' away from me , I was in the blind around 4 hours in the morning , went to the house and had some lunch and went back to the same blind .The deer stayed there all day , they would get up and walk around a little and go back to there beds. As long as they feel safe they will stay where they are for a good amount of time. Another time hunting state land there was a buck bedded down behind a big downed tree , it was there for 4 or more hours that I was above it on the side of a hill, it did not move until a few doe came out of a near by swamp.

Farmers cut the corn, blackberries and blueberries are gone. As said above look for other food sources as acorns ect.

Just because there are not any in your town or county it does not mean they will not travel.Just give them a nice tip for there travel time and the time in the woods. When I lived on L.I. in Nassau county it would take 45 minutes to an hour to get to most of the tracking I did with Lee B. of DSI. , while in training for my NYS LTD lic.

Buy yourself a small can of Imperial Case Lube , The best I ever used in the past 50 years.

Get a back hoe attachment if you can afford it, sorry i did not buy one when i bought the tractor, comes in handy planting trees ect. If you live on the side of a mountian with slopeing ground as I am buy chains for all 4 tires ( you will see why after a heavy rain or snow ) .A cab is nice to have when plowing or moving snow when it is windy and 0 degrees or wanting to move something in the rain. If I had it to do over again I would buy the Red or the Blue Tractor
