  1. I'd keep looking. If the temps are cold enough, it should still be ok.
  2. I would recommend that you visit the S.W.F.A. website and check their offerings. They also have a Samplelist section comprised of trade-ins, discontinued models and sales specials. Prices are good, and they are a great company (out of Midlothian, Texas).
  3. Nothing like reading some lib oral diarrhea from Uptown Red. It just makes a person smile.
  4. Very sorry to hear of your Father's passing. May he RIP.
  5. I always enjoy reading these posts about the final days of hunting. However, it's too damn cold out there for this Florida (conversion) boy. We are currently at 84* F. I just came in from yard work. Hope all you tough guys make out great. Good luck.
  6. I thought it would be cool to get some pics up of unusual or out-of-the-ordinary taxidermy. Don't get me wrong, I love to see nicely done bucks, but there are so many other critters that tell stories. I'll start with this bull gator. He was 10.5' and was taken at WDW with the state trapper (Terry Parlier at the time). It was in 1998 and we were running baited lines at night. It took quite awhile to get him landed and, if you can believe, he was not a happy gator!
  7. Nice review. Bow looks like it will certainly get the job done. Congrats.
  8. I like "B's" but keep this in mind. The Mark V is the flagship, the Vanguard line is the "economy" version. They are different. I'll take a Mark V any day. The action is very strong, the reduced bolt lift aids in ease of scope mounting and the stock design (although weird looking to many) does aid in mitigating recoil.
  9. My worst was some old nabby azzed quail given by a friend. My best has been venison tenderloins and moose. BTW, I've had gator often. It is quite wonderful when prepared correctly.
  10. LOL about the beer. Knowing my family at that time, it was likely something cheap and abundant. PBR comes to mind (or OMG something like Ballentine) !
  11. my first buck kill. It was 1966, I was 16, on my first solo hunt, and it was opening day. I was over in the State woods that border our hunting property. After not seeing much (around noon) I decided to head back towards our cabin for some lunch. While walking an old logging trail, I see a shadow (?) approaching from around a corner. All of a sudden, there is this little basket-racked 6 point standing on the trail (about 30) yards away staring directly at me. Holy moly, I pull up the Browning Sweet Sixteen and commence firing. He goes down in a heap! After calming down, I realize it's gut job time. Having never before performed that task, I remembered an old Outdoor Life article that I had placed, in my hunting coat pocket, prior to the season. I followed it and successfully completed my mission. Now for the drag. Holy crap, this little guy was HEAVY. Knowing that I had about a mile to go, I figured (apparently correctly) that this was going to be quite a chore. My decision was to go downhill towards Beeman Hollow Rd. (the local version of Deliverance types)! After several hours... I made it. Now what? Using my slightly under-developed brain, I hatched a plan. Along comes an old farm truck, so I proudly stuck out my hitchhike thumb and he pulls over. After hearing my woeful story, he loads the deer and I up, and hauls us back to the farm gate at the hunting property. After thanking the old farmer, I literally ran back to our cabin (about 1/4 mile) to show / tell the crew about my accomplishment! At first, nobody believed me... until I pulled a bag from my coat with the most beautiful heart and liver a sixteen year old blooming hunter could deliver! That did the trick!. After the obligatory congrats, we ran the jeep back out and picked him up. After hanging him from the pole, I was proudly accepted into the deer hunters club at our place... with a cold beer! Imagine that, today they would all be arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor! Back then, I was King for the Day! That is exactly how I got my first deer... a buck.
  12. Here's my take... I'm just grateful to still be able to get out and hunt. NBD (one way or the other) if I shoot something or not. We were lucky this year and harvested 3 bucks... last year only one small doe. That's just the way it is.
  13. The 3rd pic is the jumping coyote.
  14. So, this was the first year we put out trail cams (2). One was over a hot scrape and from Nov 8-12 the action was non-stop. I had 10 different bucks plus coyotes, fox, raccoon, turkeys, a fisher, ATV riders, fox, hunting hounds and squirrels. The fisher was cool as in my area (of 8T) they are kind of rare.
  15. Who, in their right mind, would want that scag as a girlfriend? Just wonderin?
  16. Welcome Jay! A word to the wise is sufficient... beware the midget man Pygmy. LOL
  17. Advanced Tree Stands has a neat stand design that's easier to hang. It has a stem that attaches to the tree first, then the platform and seat snap in. One variety has it's own ratchet straps (2) and the other uses conventional ratchet straps. The platform is one piece cast aluminum. Upon leaving, you can either leave it in place or remove the seat / platform if you wish.
  18. Henry has a "new" lever operated "bolt" rifle called the Long Ranger. It's available in .223, .243, and .308. It's sort of a copy of the Browning BLR wherein it uses a box mag so spitzer bullets are ok. Street price is around $850.
  19. All of my hunting rifles wear scopes from 32mm to 42mm. Nothing larger is required IMO.
  20. Neat story. Better late than never! Great bucks BTW.
  21. De-bone here. If you do too much "bone" sawing, left-over fragments are detrimental to meat flavor.
