  1. Had buck fever with my first few deer. I can remember my first buck, resting off my knee, bouncing up and down, trying to pull the trigger when cross hair was on his body. Luckily was still able to make a killing shot. Hard to control but just try to remind myself to take slow breaths and once I decide it's a deer I want to shoot, don't look at antlers, concentrate on the shot.
  2. Gun cabinet gremlins? I hear ya. This is the first time I can remember not having to tweak the scope even a little.
  3. Yup opening day is usually crazy. .Our property is about 120 acres of woods surrounded by green files and corn fields. We usually get a lot of doe and smaller bucks cruising through with the occasional big boy. Hope to get an opportunity this year. Good luck.
  4. Thanks.I like to keep my feet on the ground! Especially when it is cold and windy. The pine boughs make a good wind break. Good luck.
  5. Thanks. Picture is a little deceiving. I'm on the edge of the first plateau of a pretty steep ridge with a long gentle slope up to some green fields across from me. Good luck to you too.
  6. I don't bow hunt so my season with weapon in hand is this Saturday. Checked the rifle - 3 shots at 50 yds - don't have a farther clear shot in the woods so that's where I zero it in Got the ground blind freshened up View from the blind Can't wait! Who else is just getting out for the SZ opener? Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
  7. If you are working in Colonie you should give the Pine Bush a try. Only minutes from any place in Colonie. I don't know much about best places to access but I see hunter's vehicles parked on 155 (New Karner Road) all the time during the season.
  8. Big pot of chili and couple hot dogs Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
  9. I try to get my extra hour of sleep on Sunday night by going to bed an hour early.
  10. We're in the middle of the burbs but on a street that doesn't connect to the adjacent neighborhoods. We only get the kids that live on our street and a few others. Maybe 25 or 30.
  11. Here's our front steps tonight. There could be beer or candy (or both) behind those punpkins. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
  12. I also hunt 4C (Center Brunswick). We have 125 acres for three hunters. We have a large corn field that borders one side that no one is allowed to hunt. About 250 acres of green fields and woods borders the other side. The two guys that hunt that property only bow hunt and are trophy hunters. We have a 6 point or better policy on our land for about the last ten years. The 375 acres that are "managed" is small compared to the huntable land surrounding us but I can say that we not only see more 6 point and larger bucks but smaller 4 point and spike bucks as well.
  13. Can't beat grilled cheese and soup on a cool day. Also, it must be white bread (maybe italian) and American cheese.
  14. Live from the thruway. Just before exit 44 heading westbound a six point jumped out of some cattails on a dead run, thought he was gonna run right into the side of my car. Some how made it between me and the tractor trailer behind me and all the way across the eastbound lanes. This was at 4:45 yesterday. Saw two dead spike horns on drive up from Fredonia to Buffalo this afternoon.
  15. Leftover Halloween candy. Peanut Butter cups and Snickers are preferred. Also like granola bars. Gonna try those sausage and cheese muffins this year. They look great. Could become a new favorite.
  16. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to taking shots on deer. I hunt woods and not many shots over 75 yards and like to get them broadside. This is maybe not the "best" but definitely exciting - I had a buck chasing a doe back and forth in front of me for a few minutes and they ran out into a field on neighbor's property about 200 yards to my right and I figured they were gone. A minute later I hear crashing and here they come running right down the ridge I was sitting on. I get the 12ga up and Doe ran right behind the tree I was sitting against with the buck about 10 yards behind. Pulled the trigger on the buck at 5 yards, he went up on his hind legs and fell.
  17. Well you know they call beans the musical fruit, more you eat the more you toot. Sitting here by myself waiting now. She's with her teacher though in a small room. If she comes out giggling, I'll know why Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  18. Kielbasa with onions and canned "baked" beans. Taking daughter to her piano lesson after this...lol Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  19. Here's a link to a pretty good explanation of brining. https://www.cooksillustrated.com/articles/36-how-to-brine-a-turkey Salt is the key as well as the concentration of salt solution vs the brining time. The following is from the site: "A four-hour soak in a solution of 1 cup of table salt per gallon of water does the job for moderately sized 15-pound turkeys" "For an overnight brine, halve the salt—use 1⁄2 cup table salt per gallon of water"
  20. Open face roast pork sandwich (from leftover rotisserie pork roast from Sunday), fries, cran sauce and a spinach salad with grated parm. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  21. Sorry for your loss. I hope you get to make him proud with that rifle this season.
  22. Check out these guys in Hoosick Falls. Have used them for a couple deer and very happy with them. I believe cost was in the $100 range and that included adding pork fat to the grind. They also portion, vacuum seal and label everything. https://strattonscustommeats.com/
  23. That is scary. I hunt on private property and still always have a flashlight when walking in and out in the dark and wear orange during gun season. You just never know what idiots could be out there.
  24. Yep. Wouldn't think twice about pulling the trigger on that guy. Hope you get him!
  25. I can't say whether a deer has ever winded me because of the Sawyer's. I can say however that it was not uncommon to be picking ticks off my clothes while on stand and typical to find a dozen or more on my hunting clothes (inside and out) at the end of a day. Started using the Sawyers two years ago and no ticks. The stuff works and the risk of Lyme is not worth not using it. I treat my outer layers and my first inner layers and after drying, I can't detect any permethrin odor.
