landtracdeerhunter
This morning, taking a stroll, looking up at a permanent stand, I realized that bow season starts in month and a half, give or take. That's 40 some days from now. Decided, now is not the time to get in panic mode. I'm static. Tree stands need prep, not to mention placement, trimming.; Bow hasen't been practiced with, near enough; Food plots, fields need planting, etc, etc, etc.. So behind right now, never will be caught up. Top this all off with a stupid, finger laceration on my release hand. Is anyone else feeling the excitement in the cool air? RobC
I was super excited about the oct. 1st opening day till I found out it was on a mon. So it'll only give me an extra 3 days. Really hope it cools down and stays that way by then
wdswtr
You guys do realize that we been hunting Sept. 27 on last years tag for years and years. Out west they have seasons starting in August. Planning ahead for a potential kill in the earlier season is a good idea. Be prepared to get the deer dresses and cooled off well before you get in the field. Talk to your local butchers if you do not process them yourself. Most around me are open and ready to go. I have always a few bags of ice in the chest freezer when the season starts as well. A body bag for the deer packed with ice if you process yourself with no cooler is a good idea too. We been doing it for a long time and have not lost any deer to spoilage yet. Plan ahead and things will be just fine.
ants
Yeah it's gonna be wierd this year. I'm usually setting and trimming stands on Oct. 1st. through about the 5th or so.
growalot
Feeling the pressure here...just one last planting but the rain keeps stopping me ...before that delay in shipping...but alls good and let the rain pour down!!I'm not anxious ...but my cams have not picked up a single buck...not even a spiker.....but that is usual....what I'm missing are the pics from our porch of buck in the field all summer...it's now 7ft high corn ...I do have a stand to fix...a couple to re-enforce the safety(chains)...and thinking of a quick build ???l Lord it's an addiction Every year I swear not another...Ohh Well...that first two weeks is scouting...checking each stand site to see movement and predict best pre rut sites will be...if I happen across a shooter...all the better...and one doe....the guys like jerky and I want it out of the way before my serious hunting begins... Ohh and now is when I start freezing water filled(3/4) Milk jugs...they stay colder longer and no melting ice ice water to contend with Edited August 12, 2012 by growalot
landtracdeerhunter
We use gallon jugs and half paper cartons. Does work great. Wdswtr brings up some very good points in his post. Mid October is usually still quite warm here still.with the old southern opener date. Provisions are in place for an unexpected harvest come Oct. 1. Might even spoil, with a walk in cooler, one more thing on the list, lol. Edited August 12, 2012 by landtracdeerhunter
oneidacountyhunter
Looking foward to this season. Still in hopes a of great season due to the mild winter. My trail cam hasn't picked up a single deer yet Not too worried though I know where they are.
erussell
I'm just getting my boat in the water, havent even started to think about deer season yet. Crap!!!!
Doc
I'm just getting my boat in the water, havent even started to think about deer season yet. Crap!!!! Lol ..... That pretty well sums up where I am as far as being ready for bow season. No, I don't have a boat, but I sure do have a whole lot of "summery" type things that I'm still into. I have had the bow out on a fairly regular fashion. And I do have critter-cams out, but not all of those are aimed at just deer. As usual, some of my summer activities involve hikes up on the hill, so I guess simply by osmosis, I am soaking up a bit of early scouting here and there. But as far as getting stands prepped and checking out hunting equipment, it just ain't happening yet. Life is chucked full of too many things to allow me to get too far ahead .... lol. Cabin Fever
It dawned on me last week how close we are to season. I went out and checked all 10 stands, to make sure they were all good and secure. I trimmed up 7 of the stands, so they're all good to go and I won't need to go back out to them. I'll get out this week and finish the other 3 stands! After that, I'm all done! Just need to wash the camo!
Fantail
Prep & practice time is underway. No need to panic. Temps are about right to get jazz done, one weekend at a time.
landtracdeerhunter
Did do check over on stands yesterday, touch up, and general testing. Did tree scouting. Tried to figure what Oct. 1st looks like to area concealment. Good leaf stand this year, which, no doubt will hinder. Now know what you Northern zone guys go through, lol. wdswtr
You know one thing that occured to me last night while out scouting around the woods? I need more treestands now lol. Since I hunt northern and southern bow and the seasons are on top of each other I cant move some of my northern stands to southern tier when I start bowhunting there. Dang it I have to buy more stands. Bummer. Edited August 13, 2012 by wdswtr
Meat First
Yea its almost like everything has been pushed up 1 month and I'm a month behind. Going to plant clover this weekend i think im on schedule with that but we still have two new stands to hang and two rooms in the house to paint(pipes busting last winter) not to mention trimming all regular stands, checking camereas etc...but i guess these are good problems to have. Doewhacker
Geeze you guys should relax a little hunting supposed to be fun. Lol I hunt from the ground and don't do food plots or trail cams, I'm good and ready.
Pav2704
I can finally say that all food plots are in... it definately was a tough summer with the little rain that we got! I need to trim a few lanes and mow trails at the end of August. Now is the time that I really start putting up my trail cams. My buddy and I bought one of those large coleman cooler for an early October deer. We were thinking that we could pack in the cooler if we shot a deer Saturday morning and it would be good for the four hour drive Sunday afternoon. Just something I don't want to have to think about!!! Cant freakin wait!!!!!
wdswtr
Geeze you guys should relax a little hunting supposed to be fun. Lol I hunt from the ground and don't do food plots or trail cams, I'm good and ready. I can say that most of my early northern tier bow kills have come when I was on the ground. Up close and personall is defintaley a lot fun and a totally different challenge in itself. In my younger days lol..... I remember hanging stands with great background cover like branches and leaves in the N.Tier. I applied the same practice in southern zone when we got a camp and land down there. I remember that first day of bow season I got to hunt down there and went to one of the stands seeing it completely skylined lol. Early season sure does apply some different tactics than later in the year for stand placement.

sweet old bill
I been shooting 24 arrows each morning at about 630 am, while it is kool. The bow and backup bow is sighted in and if I miss it because of me and not the bow. I have 3 doctors appointments this coming week to see what is next for me with health issue. I am hoping I will not need any operations and additional tests. I love the idea of Oct 1, the deer still are in there normal feeding and the weather we have had means the farmer will not yet be cutting the corn, the rain showers we have had may give them about a month more in growing so they get a better % of there corp. If you farm am I correct in the corn analysis. I am planning on the end of next week to check out some of the ground blinds I have in back of the house to see the level of activity. landtracdeerhunter
Bill, hope everything comes out good for u. Sounds like your right on top will arrow practice. Like to practice 8:30 eves, and doing more out of ground blind, sitting. Want to be ready what mom nature throws, and not trusting her this year, lol. We seem to harvest our best deer out of some worst weather. Everything is a month ahead this year, corn being no exception. It needs a certain amount of growing degree days to mature, and we got them this year, lol. A lot of corn is in it's final stages. The silage corn is already coming off here. The grain corn is going to be early also. Their were some fields, hay harvested first, that went into corn, so they will be later. I'm thrilled for the Oct. 1st opener. A little uncertainty as to the early opener feel, but sure to adjust very quickly. We are down near 50 degree this morn, fall feel already. Is the weather a month earlier too, time will tell. Skillet
For the first time, our stands are ready well in advance of the season. I just have to rake one trail out, and mow another.
bubba
Just remember no one is forcing you to hunt 10/1. You can still wait until mid month to get at it. That will leave you two extra weeks to get ready. Ahahaha I am just kidding. Trust me after a couple years of the earlier opener, you will be mad if they set it back again. You will learn to t adjust to starting earlier.
WNYBuckHunter
I havent started prepping stands yet. I just have 1 or 2 to hang and lanes to cut anyway, so no biggie.
NFA-ADK
Can't wait, been shooting my bow all year. Had a loose arrow reast for 3 weeks that just compleatly loosened up last week. Now I am hittimg bull's again... Make sure you recheck everything for tightness as the bolts loosen due to vibrations...
