blackradio
hah I read this thread the other day and then got into the woods. Got my safety harness on and before I could sit down, a deer ran up the hill and came right into me. It was a button buck and stayed 10 feet from my stand for 10 minutes, then walked calmly into cover.

phade
I passed a button today. Along with his mama. Wow was she big too. I was hoping theyd get to my fil but no dice. He saw one of them at about 50 yds. Buttons here weigh as much as a 1.5 buck at home.
Guns&ReligionCop
8 am slightly larger than a btn buck but smaller than a spike not sure what to call that perhaps a btn spike?
Culvercreek hunt club
I saw one up north on opening weekend of rifle that was out about an inch and it was actually bloddy around the stubs. he weighed about 70 bounds but there were white nubs. Fist time I have seen them that small and broken through the skin.
BuckThornBooners
Ohhh yes, the Meat hunter otherwise known as the people that measure success by tags filled just ask them “I got 4 deer this year” they love to trough numbers out there that make them fell like achieved hunters when asked, so what if it was 3 button bucks and a 4pt. got 4 deer dude what did you get? if you are whiteness to their hunting you learn quick that they have every excuse in the book of why they shot a 60lb deer IM JUST A MEAT HUNTER I don’t care about horns ,, that’s my favorite one! I have seen these proud meat hunters even shoot deer in the Hams they get their meet any way they have to! I have also watched the tag fillers butcher jobs. cutting up deers is a lot of work so after about the second kill let’s just get the back straps and the steak I need to hurry up and get back out and kill more… These are also the same people that don’t see mature deer “my hunting area sucks I never see a nice one” I wish I had your spot so I could kill nice ones This may not apply to all and I’m not directing it to anyone just sharing my view because I use to be a MEAT hunter. . I just figure out how to get more meat out of less deer LET THEM GROW!!!! http://charliealsheimer.com/ca/articles/art_frombuttons.html

irish_redneck
My guess would be doe but I'm no expert, I've been told that the sloping of the head like that would indicate doe more than a square blocky head... but I shot a nice doe in muzzle loader last year that had a square block head so .... bubba
sure look slike the nub or bone just to the left of the ear, so my guess button buck. still tiny though.

tughillhunter
easy way to tell, lift his leg and see if he has a tally....... looks like a button buck to me, the bone structure on the head.
phade
I love how, in this dog-eat-dog world of NY deer hunting, where people tightly monitor property lines and access is at a premium, where food plots are made to pull deer in, that at the same time they worry about button bucks that have practically NOTHING TO DO WITH BUCKS BEING ON THEIR GROUND. People....buttons will be your neighbors bucks for the most part. Walking contradiction.
132 eight pointer
I try not to kill any fawns, however I would be lying if I said I have not.I killed a few button bucks because I wanted venison and had none(key word WANTED).I killed some button bucks and regretted it and others I didn't.I have seen button bucks that I couldn't believe were only 6 months old they were so big and others were tiny.I also agree that button bucks are just not mature enough to be afraid of much so they are vulnerable.I would PERSONALLY prefer a big bodied deer but I admit the young ones were delicious just like veal.I leave the choice up to the hunter because around where I live a lot of deer and fawns get whacked by cars and that is a complete waste most of the time.I believe a hunter will evolve and decide for themselves if a deer is "too small" or not. bkln
who cares, ha ha bet its going to good and tender That was my thinking too :-) From now on I will take a second look, this was my archery icebreaker and finally I got the monkey off my back.... Thanks for all tips though
TreeGuy
You tell me doe or button buck.... teach me... and explain why Going off whats in the pic, buttons or not, it has a small snout, and a short and skinny neck.... i think the snout is usually a great place to start to tell age on the hoof. If i catch myself asking if it could be a fawn, i let it pass and i havent regretted any yet. And i love backstraps as much as the " meat hunters" do ! But, if ur after meat, who cares, just make sure its a deer and shoot. Either way, good kill and congrats.

TreeGuy
Thanks TG Its my pleasure! I never wanted to push my ethics, just info ive picked up. Trust me, only shooting mature deer can be veeeeeery stressful but i feel it always pays off. Its your call, but you cant get the bigguns if u only shoot the little ones. I dont want to sound like ive been hunting for a hundred years, but i have always tried to gain knowledge every year im in the woods. Nomad
I did not read this whole thread, but I say good job ! My first bow kill was also a button back in '88 my first year bow hunting and one of my favorite hunts . A bunch of us at work started bow hunting the same year and I was the only one to score, that ticked off many THAT alone was worth a lot. Hey any one can hit a BIG target !
