I just finished watching Wayne LaPierre's speech on CNN. I must say it was a very powerful speech. Here's a link to the full text: http://home.nra.org/pdf/Transcript_PDF.pdf

The best part of his speech IMO was this: "We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses — even sports stadiums — are all protected by armed security. We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers. Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent and vulnerable members of the American family — our children — we as a society leave them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it."

I agree 1000% with his statements.

BTW those dumba$$ protesters that stood up are just plain ignorant.

Yes, he had some good points, but I also agree that what he said will not go far. As we have seen on this site, even many gun owners think many laws need to be improved. He didn't say a damned thing about any change or improvement in gun laws. Not that I expected that he would. That would have surely been a revelation from the NRA if he had. So, he said pretty much what I expected him to say. Did very little to show the NRA in even a slightly different light to the general public in my opinion.

I was watching at work and got interpreted by a phone call so i had to turn it off. From what i heard most of it was about getting armed police officers in every school in america. I believe it is a good idea but they will still try to ban assault weapons saying the general public has no need for them besides to carry out crimes. I don't agree with it but i know it will be happening sooner or later all b/c of a piece of scum that decided to shoot up a school.

I agree, it was an excellent and proper response. It is not easy responding to something that is not your fault and people expect you to fix. Kind of sad how we protect everything better than our children. The schools have the money, they just need to direct it to the protection of our children.

That news conference will not be good for the NRA. He would have been better off not saying anything. Will only further the public's anger with the NRA.

because their solution is to protect the children instead of wishing and praying.

Is heroin, crack, meth etc legal in schools or anywhere? No. Is it still there? yes. So banning guns from law abiding citizens will also stop criminals... or will it empower them knowing nobody else has a gun? I believe someone said it well earlier "sickos know schools are great targets because they are gun free zones"

I watched the whole speech. There were two seperate protesters that held up big signs in front of the stage and yelled nonsense about the NRA killing the kids. I thought it would have made a great segue for Lapierre to go into the need to deal with the mental health issues in this country.

because could you imagine what would have happened if they violently apprehended someone exercising their 1st amendment while they stand up for the 2nd? I was surprised at the time it took, but they had to be very careful of how they handled them.

RIght. There was way too much time to extract the nuts. Now when I watch the news reports of the speech, they of course focus on the nuts.

Exactly... I thought that the first nut was allowed to stand there , close to the main speaker, way too long. Poor security IMHO.

And ...yeah the only thing the news is concentrating on are the protesters & their juvenile antics.

I thought the crazy ranting interruptions were a good thing. Maybe it helps to open some eyes as to the rabid maniacal nature of these people. Those wackos were really showing their stripes, and I think it turned out to be a very positive set of occurances for the NRA.

Here is something many have yet to consider... making new gun laws or any laws for that matter does not change the attitude or personality or mind set of any person hell bent on killing... dealing with the people or persons and even the culture in general with better morals, ethics, faith and hope lessens the need for more and more laws. The short of it is that no law can lessen the criminal mind of the bad man, but changing the mind of the bad man can lessens the need for the law. I think the focus is on the wrong thing for most and the NRA is at least on the right track..
