ILION — Remington Arms has been awarded a nearly $80 million contract from the Pentagon to produce sniper ri­fles at the company’s Mohawk Valley plant, an upstate New York congress­man said Friday.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna, whose 22nd District includes the plant in Ilion in Herkimer County, said the contract calls for Remington to make more than 5,000 sniper rifles and millions of rounds over 10 years for the U.S. Special Operations Command.

Hanna, a Republican, called Reming­ton “the premier manufacturer” of snip­er rifles for the American military. Un­der the contract, the company will pro­duce the Remington Modular Sniper Ri­fle, or MSR, which has a range of up to 1,500 meters, or just under a mile.

The contract announcement came two days after a group of state lawmak­ers met with Remington officials who told the legislators that the company plans to spend $20 million upgrading its gun manufacturing plant in Ilion.

Local media outlets report that three senators and three Assembly members met with Remington officials on Wednesday to discuss what they could do to ensure the company keeps its plant in Ilion, where the company employs about 1,200 people. Concerns were raised about the company’s future in Ili­on after the Legislature passed a law banning the sale of military-style rifles, including the Bushmaster product made at the plant.

Since the law was passed in mid-Jan­uary, other states have shown interest in having Remington relocate the plant.

Remington officials haven’t com­mented on the upgrade plans.

Remington has been a part of Ilion since 1816, when Eliphalet Remington crafted a flintlock rifle on his father’s forge. In addition to producing firearms and ammunition for the military and law enforcement, the Madison, N.C.-based company also makes weapons for hunt­ing and shooting sports.

People want remington to stop selling to the government (boycott) because of the recent gun ban. A bunch of other firearms manufacturers stopped selling to govt their theory is If i cant sell to the civilians then I wont sell to govt.

Um, this contract is for sniper rifles for the military, not ARs or other guns that would be banned in NY under the SAFE Act. Sounds to me like its a gun company making a sound business decision. Please enlighten me on how Remington refusing to manufacture guns in NY State, by NY State workers, therefore putting NYers to work, is a stab in the back.

Money wise , it's a great decision but they sure aren't falling in line supporting the gun rights of NY citizens like other companies . Big deal . 900 jobs secured for the sake of greed .

Well, while our lovely powers that be in the state on NY who infringe on our rights and i emphasize on our rights, we as the people need to and are taking a stand for what believe. Thus MANY guns and ammo manufactures across the country including and not limited to NY have made that stand with us and for us. Vouching NOT to supply government officials / sheriffs / police and so on in efforts to hit them where it hurts. from what i heard there were MANY Remington employees at the last rally in Albany.

If anything these companies standing up for us and themselves im sure are seeing great business gains from the people they are backing... Remington is backing the very people who are in aid of taking mine, yours and their rights away. Essentially im sure if Obama has his way most of these NY manufactures will be hurting even more if ALL states are commanded to comply. So by smart business decision you mean make the money while you can then sure. who knows how long manufactures will be able to so in my eyes make the stand and show you wont break...

EDIT: WNY is correct... touchy subject for me.. i got hyped up and over looked it was for US gov... sorry lol

but its not just NY per say, its any government entity that severely restricts a citizens right to own and bare arms in ANY STATE, is where these manufactures are stopping law enforcement sales. the logic is they dont want to continue to arm the government where the government is trying to disarm the citizens...

So far, the beef is with Cuomo and his merry gang of gun-banners. The gun companies as of yet have no new Federal gun legislation to be the cause of any Federal boycotts. Further, I personally would look at the act of with-holding armament to our troops as being treasonous. Our military personel have done nothing regarding gun control that warrants putting their lives in jeopardy.

this is a big win for the employees of Remington and the town of Ilion and all the small businesses that make a living in that town feeding and clothing those employees, fixing those employees cars, selling them cars and whatever else. It boggles my mind how anyone would not wanna see a NY state manufacture like Remington get an 80 million dollar 10 year gov contract?

If the NY safe act is overturned it will be in the courts and that will happen with Remington here or not, i prefer here for the hard working middle class people of that company...

5000 sniper rifles for the military ? You gotta be kidding ! Are you telling me that there are over 5000 snipers in the military ? I don't think so . $16,000 per rifle with ammo ???

There are 2 snipers in every squad, not like you and i think of snipers from vietnam or black ops but they are called snipers non the less, expert marksmen for sure and some survial traing but they are more of squad support so 5000 is no an unrealistic number

Over the span of 10 years, there would be more than 5000 snipers in the different branches of the military as every branch has them, even the coast guard. Plus you have to take into account spare rifles they would keep in stock and rifles for training purposes.

Remington got a contract they haven't left, NYers still have jobs. STOP bashing the **** out of them, which you want to stay. This is the US military not NY Everyone is watching NY. Let's get our laws straightened out first, get Remington back to producing modern sporting rifles, and the rest of the country will follow suit.

Snipers train (shoot) a lot. So much so that their rifle barrels actually get shot out. A bolt action rifle, that might last a hunter way more than a life time, might only last a sniper a few years before wear on the rifling effects accuracy.

Money Talks ---- BS Walks ! So we can tell the state and local police agencies that they won't be supported by many manufacturers but not the Federal Government . Wait and see how many of these guns are put into the hands of NYS police agencies . Then again they are gonna be screwed because the guns are Remington made .......
