Is it just me?

Maybe it's because this will be my first solo deer hunt, but all I can think about is getting in the woods. I have in my mind that I might not catch a deer but I'm not really concerned about that. I keep seeing me posted up by a tree, shots sounding in the distance and me waiting for my prey to appear.

I checked my gear list and I have everything I think I need, not all I want but all I need lol.

Nice to see your enthusiasm. :good:

Hopefully you kill a deer since catching one is going to be a pretty tough deal and probably illegal. :D

Although you are excited you will need to keep cool; you are undertaking a very serious deal as far as handling guns, climbing trees (if you choose that) slippery hillsides and most importantly positively identifying your target.

Don't push it, that's when mistakes can happen.

Best of luck to you........

I remember the days just thinking about being in the stand on opening day or first bow hunt. Where the deer would come from, how big and what typeof shot. It would consume me until the day. You are normal don't worry! lol

Funny how you say "catch" a deer. So many of my non hunting friend use that phrase. I say its a harvest, they laugh,

you can't harvest a deer. In the end I killed it no sugar-coating the phrase and all is good. Have a great time out there

and if you go up a stand make sure you where a safety harness!!

Speaking of catching a deer a old man I used to live across the street from said when he was a kid him and his brother used the family tractor dug a big hole and put mattress springs in the hole cover it with leaves and put some corn on it. The deer would walk over it and fall thru the springs and couldn't touch the bottom so couldn't get out and presto dinner for a month....idk how real this is but seems like it would work....lol

I was always addicted to hunting but shooting my first deer started the obsession and missing a few pushed me to the edge.  I joined a nuisance permit this year and wow did it help scratch the itch!  I have yet to shoot at my first deer with a bow but with the sniper program on LI I have changed my view on shooting doe and will target them this year for the first time.

Funny even with 8 guys hunting I am still solo as the sport was meant to be.  But to hunt solo is another world and is very enlightening.  Be safe, have fun and enjoy the woods.  Remember family and friends before hunting.  Best of luck and I hope to see you in pictures this season!

Hunting is a bug that causes an itch, I hope you get to scratch it this season!

I've heard Indians used to run down deer, each taking turns running after it until tiring and another would take over. I may have even read a thread on here about it.

Might have been me. Humans are the only animal that can regulate their body temperature while still running (from sweating). Other animals regulate heat by panting. The idea is to, with team work, never let the animal have a chance to stop and pant to the point that it passes out due to heat exhaustion. Easier to do in hot climates such as Mexico and the Kalahari.

Have fun! If you don't see anything don't let it discourage you. When I was young, my father and I hunted unproductive property year after year. We never gave up. Every few years we would get a deer. Lately we have been extremely blessed and have been pulling deer off a nice productive property every year. You will likely hear distant shots throughout the day opening weekend. I use those shots as energy to be more focused on the game and my surroundings.

An often overlooked piece of advice for you: You will likely have to pee while in the woods. I know your not hunting from a stand but at the beginning of the season I tie an old jug (with cap) that I can "go in" to my stand. Helps with scent control. You may want to pickup one or two of those cheap collapsible water bottles the grocery store sells. You can pee in them and seal them up. Your aim needs to be pretty good though.

Not trying to spark a debate, but I don't buy into that 1 bit and never will. I have literally & intentionally urinated on an active 3ft. scrape. On my way to the stand the next morning I checked and the scrape had been freshened overnight. That day I had a shooter 11pt. with a bleach-white rack chasing 3 doe all around me. They passed within 2ft. of that scrape twice and didn't even care. He never offered a shot because he was only interested in the does.

Needless to say, nowadays I "let er' fly" whenever the need arises. Hmmm, maybe I should develop a taste for acorns!

We all have the things we do & don't buy into. One guy that hunts an adjacent property brags about how he smokes in his stand. Sometimes he drags a deer out of the woods. It's all about the wind.

The deer you mention reminds me of the video of the guy who drives into another car because he was staring at someone he was attracted to.

When animals are pursuing the opposite sex, they often throw caution to the wind. Many of us came about because someone wasn't being careful enough...

The thing that keeps me peeing in a jug is that notion, and that our pee smells different with diet. Drink coffee and it smells like coffee. Not too many coffee plants in tee north east. That "new and unknown" scent may throw up a red flag with the deer. Just my thinking. I have been wrong before but its cheap insurance, especially when many people spend tons of money on scent free clothing, bags and sprays, which isn't my thing personally. I only do scentless soap, detergent, and spray. When I eat in the woods, I eat things deer enjoy, peanut-butter, apples. etc..

Any urine... human or otherwise will have an initial smell which dissipates quickly on the ground leaving just the ammonia... this is true for all animals... there have been many tests done with human urine and whitetails... after 10 minutes or so the whitetail can not distinguish human urine from any other animal that has peed in the woods. But if it makes you feel better to pee in a bottle while hunting, then that's what you ought to do.

a lot happens in 10 minutes in the deer woods... that's why I choose the bottle.

had on old timer when i was just starting hunting rub bannana and limburger cheese on a tree in the yard at camp,(not season) deer come right up and licked it all off did the same with cigarette butts on the ground(unfiltered back then) and deer would eat them right up.. i think they are very curious and pee is pee. i used the idea from his examples and spray apple cider in the air and deer will come with their nose up in the air right to the tree ...and if you get thirsty..you have apple cider with you for a nice quick drink :)
