ApexerER
This was inspired by another topic by another poster. I am wondering what you guys wear for a base layer when it is cold outside. I want to get away from the cotton longjohns but I am not spending the money on UnderArmor cold gear and I hate the way that tight stuff fits. You guys know of any reasonably priced moisture wicking base layers....I want to use it for Hunting and Snowmobiling.....
moog5050
merino wool is awesome. warm, comfortable, wicks moisture and doesn't hold odor. I use the minus 33 stuff. not cheap, but you really only need one set and they will last.
stoneam2006
I use the off brand under armor not quite as good honestly but still is pretty good bang for buck I think
Five Seasons
Had to buy extended boxer briefs to wear under my underarmor because it pulled the hair out of the cack of my legs. I go UA, then wool if it's real cold then scent blocker bases slayers. Then camo jean pants. Then outer layer.
BKhunter
You can get moisture wicking layers from Eastbay pretty cheap. Usually I think they go for around 2 shirts for $20.
bisceglia
Under Armor 2.0 base layers are the only thing ill walk into the woods with in subzero temps, very pricey but worth every penny when trying to stay warm in a stand all day, i would highly recommend these to everyone

I have the 2.0 and the 4.0. I used the 4.0 in -21 degree temps in Minnesota and was able to stay outside all day and not be cold.
mac
UA 2.0 with merino wool over it then whatever else is needed. You may be able to get a cheaper brand for 20 bucks less but i cant complain with the UA
ApexerER
UnderArmor Cold gear 4.0 is $200 for the set. If it didn't work damn good I would be really upset. I don't want to spend that much and the don't make their stuff to fit short chubby guys like myself....

turkeyfeathers
I wear Smartwool long undies. Very light, moisture wicking and warm . I've sat in stand all day of single digit temps with a few layers and these and been fine.
phade
Merino wool is the tops in my mind, but I haven't sprung for it yet. I have had good luck with X-Scent branded base layers at cost effective price points.Wick moisture to the mid layer, which is usually a wool or fleece layer. Hard to find, but they are an Onyx/Artic Shield brand. Edited September 24, 2014 by phade

Sogaard
I have brand new UA 4.0 that I will be taking out into the field for the first time this year. I previously had 3.0 and 2.0. Honestly, I got the UA 4.0 as a gift or I would never have bought it, not that I think it won't do the job, but I wanted to upgrade to merino wool. I never used merino wool only under armor and I am not a fan. I get cold and have hairs ripped out every time I move. Looking for something that keeps me warmer and is more comfortable. orion
never found under armour good for sitting. Works great if walking and moving.
thphm
What you want for a base layer is something with a open weave as ( fish net weave ) the best then any open weave polyproplene material it does not smell like polyester material. Cotton just holds moisture. Then a good wool or merl. wool on top of that. If you have to walk any distance to your stand UA Just smells when you get there ,not doing the job. ATbuckhunter
I use the UA as well. I have even started wearing them to college for December, February and early March. The only thing I don't like about them is that when i take them off, it can sometimes pull the hair on my arms and legs but its no biggie.
