Sidearm preference

Just wondering what sidearm is preferred when checking trail cams in the spring or when bow hunting? Thinking more for bear protection. Comteplating either a 45 or 10mm.

Its illegal to carry a sidearm while bow hunting in NY... but if I'm carrying for bear protection it would be my .44 mag... I've never had a need to carry for bear protection though... I'm sure a .45 or 10 mm would be sufficient.

Can't carry a side arm while bow hunting... it's illegal in NY.

Yea don't bring it during bow season!  Otherwise I would say the largest caliber you can shoot well with for bear protection.

it never even crossed my mind that I needed to protect myself from Bear in NY........probably more dangerous to go to a gas station.

I carried my 40 this year( gun only of course...) but that's all i had.

I carry a 4inch 357mag......when ever I ago in the woods..........Not when I am bow hunting...

I have carried .22, 380 ACP,  9mm, 38, 357, 40S&W and 45 ACP. ….But never during bow season…….that would make no sense……There are no bears near me but        

If I were thinking Bear protection (Black Bear)  I would a stick to the 357 or 45ACP. But never during bow season….that would make no sense..

If I'm carrying anything it's a S&W 642 and it isn't for bear protection..................(and not bow hunting of course)

Thanks guys. Appreciate the responses. Understood regarding bow hunting, just starting to research all laws, seasons etc. for bow hunting as this will be my first time.

When out and about in the outdoors here in Steuben County I carry a S&W M66 4" .357 mag. For whatever might need shooting..

When carrying concealed I carry a S&W M 637 .38 SP.. For whatever might need shooting..

I may very well be incorrect but I don't think you are allowed to carry durring late muzzle season right....or early muzzle season northern zone?

Edit....orginal question my ans is 9mm I love my ruger and different loads for different targets

Little 4" 22 every day when legal,When Bear are  around 4" 357 mag. or 45 LC. with the choke tube for # 4 shot got quite a few fox with that. Shot my .357once just to scare off a bear and it took off running like heck to the next town and never came back.

Easiest to remember this way, the only time you can carry a pistol while deer hunting is when a pistol would be legal for that season.

A great side arm would be the TC 7mm-08 like mine!!! Pretty sure you can carry during bow season as long as you have a CCW. Correct me if I'm wrong in that aspect.

Incorrect about ccw and bow hunting. All New York permits are ccw although the some have restrictions printed on them, unrestricted still cannot carry while bow hunting.

NOBODY can carry a handgun while deer hunting during Bow season with archery gear.......not a private citizen with a concealed carry permit, not a Police Officer and not an ECO.....what you choose to do is up to you, but know the law so you don't "accidentally" offer up info you shouldn't have.

If you have a muzzleloader pistol (single-shot) and a permit for it, you could carry that during muzzleloader season.  I don't recall seeing that you couldn't carry a brace of pistols.
