Hunter9396
I live in Pine Bush, ny & I recently have a couple new properties to hunt on. I want to set a trail cam out on them and see if there's any bears on the property. Any tips on what attractants I can use or what I can put out to attract them in.. Thanks, Rick. lu.cio.fin
Think it's illegal to bait them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Trial153
I have Gotten most of my bear pictures on field edges. I attribute that to their almost randomize movement through woods.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
lu.cio.fin
My shot was an inside corner by a stream on a game tail I thought was just for deer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Doc
Check out any corn fields that are surrounded by a good stretch of woods. Pay particular attention to the corners away from any roads. Look for flattened down corn stalks and bear scat. If you find all that, set your camera there. I ran into exactly that scenario while bow hunting in PA back in the 80's. There was no doubt in my mind that that area would have yielded an opportunity at a shot at a bear. There was even a well defined trail coming out of the woods and into the field that had been beaten down by daily visits from the bear. Sure enough my hunting partner saw a bear following that route into the field while he deer hunted. Unfortunately bear season was not open. Anyway, the thought that I am having is to let the farmer do the baiting for you....lol. Bears seem to love that corn.
greensider
why is it not legal to use scent to attract deer but not a bear like vanilla extract or some thing like that its not bait just scent
BellR
As far as I know, you can use up to 1.5 oz of liquid attractant for bears in NY.

TrailsEndTom
You are allowed 1.5 oz. of lure or scent. You can use Anise oil, vanilla, honey, or any sweet smell. I have even used a packet of Kool aid sprinkled on the ground. I have also found they like the smell of Trails End 307 deer lure ( it has a sweet smell). You want it somewhere in front of the camera so he will stop and stay in front of the camera so you can get some pics. They also like the camera's themselves. I think they can hear the very slight klick the camera makes when it takes a pic. I keep my camera's in a metal security box and still had one broken. I get multiple pics like this one every year. This bear actually broke part of the camera that was not protected by the metal box.
TrailsEndTom
Some more If and when I use a scent it is at least 20 feet or more in front of camera's not anywhere near it. I sometime even spray the camera with scent killer. Edited August 29, 2015 by TrailsEndTom

growalot
That last one is a big bear...how high on the tree is that cam?... BTW kool-aid on the ground would be considered baiting... Also again.... the law reads liquid lure...once it isn't in liquid form more can be used...IE a honey burn...soak clean cotton racks in honey let them soak it up good and then let it air dry...this can be burned releasing the same smell for a longer period and be legal ...also rags left to soak in what ever lure and hung...it is no longer liquid and you can use as much as the material will soak up....This tip was from a region 9 capt. Curmudgeon
Do baiting laws for deer and bear apply to cameras outside of hunting season or away from places where hunting is taking place? TrailsEndTom
The kool aid is powder and about a teaspoon in size.
BellR
Just mix it with 1.5oz of water. Presto, liquid attractant.
Culvercreek hunt club
Vanilla extract in a scape scent dripper would probably work well to keep putting it out there and keeping it fresh.
