Concealed Carry

Recommended Posts

???????...I'm betting that there are LOTS of "predatory animals"  in Albany...

County judges do a lot of editorializing in their treatment of pistol permits and it's a damn shame that they are allowed to take such liberties with OUR liberties..

I was told that here in Steuben, there are only two types of permits..One to possess a handgun in your home and one to carry concealed. everybody I know locally who has a permit is licensed to carry concealed..

Technically open carry is not illegal in ny, they'll just arrest you on something else. And every restricted permit in ny is a concealed carry permit, the restrictions are administrative by your local judge. You won't be arrested if you carry with that permit but if caught and police tell the judge, they can revoke it.

This is a redundant post..... so sorry about that.

But, Has anyone recently, post SAFE Act, successfully had their pistol permit amended from "Sportsman_Limited use Hunting/Target" to concealed carry? Specifically Albany County.

I've had mine in Erie County since 1983. When first issued it was "target and hunting". When I bought my business in 1985, the words "and business protection" were added. I never worried too much about the fine line between working and not working for carrying because in my mind I was always working. :)

When I was preparing to sell my business in the summer of 2014 I filled out the paper work to change mine to "unrestricted". After so many years of being an upstanding member of the community (!!) how could they deny me?

They didn't..........it was granted.

St Lawrence county legislature passed a law for just cause before the judge could impose restrictions. So far here only 1 person has been successful He had concealed carry in another county and when he moved here it got restricted. Judge dropped the restrictions. Not sure why the safe act was brought into it. It has nothing to do with it

I camp and hike where there are predators (4 legged and sometime 2).  I routinely travel from county to county with my pistols to participate in sanctioned competitions.  I'm in an area that has had cases of poaching and/or trespassing done by others who are armed and at times confrontational. etc.  I'm in Rensselaer county.  I've got a restricted permit.  eventually i'll take a class and right a letter to get it unrestricted.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that each judge can subjectively do as they please with granting pistol permits with or without restrictions.  permitting and requirements should be uniform throughout the state.  the Safe Act has everything to do with it now.  with such loosely subjective reasoning for granting or revoking, it could be reason for worry.  if you get your pistol revoked all your firearms can be taken away.  you could argue that they're your spouses but I'm sure they'd take them to "hold" until you can prove so.  you'll never get them back.

I'm willing to do a lot and wait obviously because I have pistols.  however, the whole process and system is severely damaged.  I don't blame my county either.  sheriffs, pistol clerk, and those involved are great to deal with.  they're just working with the BS that's given them.

When I moved back to NY after getting out of the service I requested an unrestricted and everyone told me no way. MY letter to the judge told him that I have a concealed carry in 4 other states and can carry concealed in over 35 other states so I felt I should be able to do the same in my home state and it was approved.

I know this post is a bit old, but holy crap you guys have to put up with a lot. Monroe county all permits are full unrestricted carry, no class to take, no letters to judges, no showing "need".

Most of my family ( including 23 y/o daughter ) , neighbors, friends and co workers have them. My daughter's recently went through in 3 months, they did not even call all of the references. It's almost like living in a free state sometimes .

here in rensselaer it took about 8 months once all the paper work was in.  i've got to write a letter and give reasons why to lift restrictions and pay money.  maybe the lack of consistency from county to county is why many other states don't recognize the NY permit??

And because ny won't honor any other states. Even ones with proof of training requirements.
