Doewacker, lmao, your right. After you've shot a few, you find you don't use words like "could have if i wanted to". All 15 of them may have busted you on the draw or jumped the string or you may have punched the trigger on that live target. Nothings for sure til you got them on the gambrel..

Just teasing by the way.

I usually go with, "I think I could have got a shot" that way there it still leaves room for anything that could have happened. lol

Any deer taken legally is is a trophy. We get too hung up on this site with other peoples ethics. Don't shoot does, Don't shoot small bucks, You should pass on this and pass on that. Only shoot mature bucks. Do you see where I am going with this? Pretty soon we should shoot nothing at all, remember the license you buy from the DEC is for hunting and you can shoot anything that is legal be it a doe, buck, small or large it's your choice. Depending what DMU you are in, so don't have someone rain on your parade if you shoot a small buck if it's what you want it's your choice period. Good luck hunting to everybody.

I disagree.. not all deer taken legally are trophies...a trophy is only in the eyes of the hunter that kills it... your trophy is not my trophy and I hope thats the way you feel about what I consider a trophy... some deer taken legally are considered trophies by some hunters.... there are very few people on this forum TELLING others to pass on deer or not to shoot does.. there are however many that express their own approach to deer hunting....there are way more on here that bash those that have made a choice to not shoot young bucks than there are those bashing those that do...

I agree 100% Dave. I may see a trail cam pic and say Id rather pass it or that Id shoot it, but thats just my opinion at the time, and no way anyone should take it as anything but that. Ive shot small deer, shot one this year, and I congratulate anyone on any deer they take. If its legal, and you want to shoot it, by all means, have at it. Gun season is here and for me, that means Ill be whacking slicks and watching any little guys, my buck tag will be put on a mature deer or a sandwich after the season is out.

You guys are right and It was the wrong choice of words. I have taken deer with a shotgun just not with the bow. Not many deer with the gun as you guys Im guessing but have tasted that feeling. Its the bow thats giving me the skunk ball. All I was saying is I would like to see more 8's and 10's walking around. Dont feel like playing keyboard commando so im done with this discussion.

As long as a person plays by the rules, it is a personal choice what to and what not to harvest. Who am I or anyone else to say it is wrong or right. That is why we have laws. Ones personal choice is just that, a personal choice. I guess after the years go by the thrill of the kill diminshes and the joy of the hunt takes over, which has me looking for something I want. Does that make me more ethical or a better hunter umm nope. Again it is a personal choice. One guy I hunt with has been hunting 15 years. He has harvested a few does over the years. This year he shot a 5 point 135 pound buck at my camp. He was proud as can be, and I was very happy for him. Would I have shot that deer? Probably not. Was I glad he did and he was happy with it. You bet I was.

The trophy status of my bucks gets measured in increments of most memmorable and not inches.

Seems like my biggest gave me some of the dullest hunts I've ever experienced, while I saw some of my smaller bucks more deserving of killing simply due to the set of circumstances that led up to a sucessfull hunt.

Certainly not my place to intervene in anyones choice of animals to kill. Ultimately, you all know what to reasonably expect out of a hunt from your areas so I think a lot is based on that principal alone. Personally I'd rather listen to the sucess story from somebody who is genuinely elated with their kill regaurdless of size. Big antlers will put a smile on ANY hunters face, but the guys that are happy with the choices they make and truely enjoy the hunt for what it is, are the kinda guys I can take a liking to!

No matter what floats your boat, have a great and safe gun season everybody!

Good comments all.

I remember my first deer after 3 years of hunting. I was just a teen and I shot a button at 87 yards with a shotgun and dropped it. While I am gutting it a guy comes up the trail from down below. He says to me yea he went buy me a bit a go and he was just a little pup so I let him go. No congratz or nothing. In a manner my mom raised me better than after he turned and walked away I flipped him the bird and finished up and dragged him out as happy as can be. Never cared a whole lot about what people I do not know and respect thought. Still don't!! I am always happy for any safe, legal hunter who gets a deer, any deer.

LOL, My first deer was a 80lb doe (muzzleloader) that my wife's uncle came up to me and said "I saw that deer yesterday and let it walk" my response to that was "yeah, well I saw this deer today and pulled the trigger!" Just Sayin

I'm looking to pull the trigger this season on a doe or a nice buck.

If I get a sense that one will walk towards my FIL it will get a pass...he hasn't gotten one in quite some time and I'd like to se him shoot anything...bb, doe, 1.5 y/o...anything. He's in his 60's and his quality hunting seasons remaining are getting fewer and fewer. I have a distinct feeling that if he shot a spike...you'd think he shot the hole in the horn buck...
