Fire pit rocks....

I have a couple hundred dozen large rocks.  100-300lbs each.  I was thinking about making a larger fire pit.  However I've heard rocks could explode. 

Most of these have not been underground for yrs. 

Thoughts????

I’ve always heard not to use use rocks from rivers  as they can explode due to water inside cracks and such . I canoe camped a lot ,so we never used rocks from  the river .

porous rocks can explode, like sandstone. Supposedly limestone can, although I've used it and it never has. Granite and gneiss are probably o.k.

These are not from a stream or river.  Most have been above ground for yrs.

lets see some pics. sedimentary rocks can be a problem,metamorphic ones(made by heat) are safer.

Metamorphic or igneous rocks are ok, sedimentary are porous usually and can explode they have water trapped in them as they form.

More often than not the big rocks are metamorphic. But pics will help.

Here's a couple examples.  1st is the size I would be using.  The second is a much bigger one that is in my yard, but I think is the same as the first one????

1st is probably 200lbs.  2nd has to be pushing 800+.

Haha,glad i could help. The rocks probably would be ok unless you get a raging fire going,but sometimes that happens,at least to me.

Thats basalt. Basically extrusive lava cooled underground near surface.  Ignious. Not ment for pits.Not metamorphic. Granites are best
