Yard Machine Options

Hey guys, looking for some pointers. I’m looking for a maintenance vehicle for my yard/property. Something that I can tool around in while working on land projects. Weather it’s building a stand, carting ladder stands around to different spots or taking the sprayer around to weed kill. First thoughts are either a Yamaha or Honda side by side, but also thought about the jd gator? Am I on the right track or am I missing an option?

Go to a few dealers and look at the options/price. Sit in them to see which one is more comfortable and fits you better.

Your going to get all sorts of "buy brand X" .  I think there all good machines.

Are we talking little projects or food plots/pulling logs, ect on a property eventually?  A side by side would be great but if you get a tractor with a bucket you can do just about anything you need.

Yeah possibly food plots but if so they would be smaller scale ones. Some sort of all around machine. Maybe a dump box or one with a bigger box capacity

Sounds like you are looking for a side by side. I have a Kubota-I use it like a second tractor-would do the work you mentioned with ease but not a lot of fun for tooling around.

I think you on the right track with the Yamaha, Honda, Gator, etc. Get to the dealers and look them over, considering what' features are most important for you

Just read your reply. I use my Kubota for spraying, dragging, and cultipacking my food plots. I also use for clean up around the property-love the hydraulic dump for that. It only does about 25mph top speed-don't know how important that is for you.

Yeah, I looked a the kubota and gators but it looks like they’re a bit slow and I’m more a faster pace!! Appreciate the input

I also own a kubota side by side and it’s a tank! I use it like a tractor and it gets used very hard. It’s been bullet proof but it’s also zero fun to ride around because it’s slow and rides rough. I also have atv’s for fun if not I would have one of the other sportier side by sides. I’ve always been a Honda and Yamaha guy so I would go that direction. I would avoid Polaris after 2 bad experiences but there are guys that love them.

If you're looking for a maintenance machine like your opening post mentioned, 25mph is fast when doing maintenance.

Sounds like you're looking for a middle of the road unit.  Tuff enough to get work done and fast enough to get in trouble, lol.

Buddy of mine just got a new gator, and its SLOOOOOOW. I thought something was wrong with it the first time i drove it, it was so slow. They are just geared for low end, so not much fun. Any of the big name brands will get you the power and some speed that you want. Ive been looking at the yamaha wolverine since its more of a mix of work and play.

Sounds like you need a good 4-wheeler with a trailer and small attachments for food plot work.

x2.   I am a bit big for the side by sides, but my ATV does everything I need for hauling and food plotting.   And way easier to jump on and off plus slightly more narrow to get through the woods.

Oh and a heck of a lot more fun for my daughter to joy ride.

Side by side is where it's at. Had wheelers for ever and after owning a sxs I'll never look back. Amazing machines for sure. I have stock tires on mine and have wiggled through some nasty stuff. It continues to impress me with capabilities. Has a nice sized dump bed, Low range for grunt work and hi range when I want to let her eat. 2014 polaris ranger 800xp. More than enough for everything I do. The Kubota is a bad a$$ machine but was too much of a dog for me.

So I’m about 6’5 ish and 280 so sounds like size could be an issue (that’s what she said). The one thing I dislike about wheelers is climbing on and off, I’ve had many times where im getting on and off frequently and lifting my damn leg over the seat 100 times gets old!!

I find it much easier than squeezing into a side by side and way more comfortable to ride.   I don't like the sardine feeling.

Something just popped up for me - not sure if it is a deal or not - 2014 Polaris Ranger 400 SxS.  I am not sure of the number of hours, but I am guessing very low.  My friend that passed away earlier this year bought it and I don't think he used it much.  His son wants to sell it now.  I would use it just for tooling around the property, not into speed or trail riding.  I have a Polaris ATV and it serves me well, but getting up and over it several times a day is getting a little old.

Any experience with this model?  Seems like it is on the cheaper end of this type of machine.

Good friend of mine has one. He's not into speed or trail riding. Uses it on his 200 acre properly.  Doesn't really use it for food plots as he has a tractor.  He loves the thing.

Bingo, I have a tractor too, so tilling and food plot work is all set.  I think my wife would be more likely to ride it or ride with me if she didn't have to sit behind me and could sit next to me.  At least that's how I am going to sell it to her tonight......

I actually use my side by side for much of my food plot work because I find it easier than getting on and off my tractor to pick up rocks, etc. I also find it easier to get on than my ATV-but I can see where some of the more performance UTVs with half doors, netting, and a more fitted driver's compartment could be difficult to get on or off than an ATV..

It is also more nimble to maneuver than my tractor. Tractor used for tilling and spreading fertilizer and rye/wheat/oats through the spin spreader, the  RTV used for spraying, dragging, and packing.

My RTV spends its life on my 10 acres, my brother's 80 acres across the road, and the 75 acres next door that we lease-so speed isn't an issue. I don't think it has been out medium or low range in 3 years!!

I’ll be playing that card for sure!!
