Ice Fishing GTG

I tried ice fishing this morning for the first time in my life. Went out with@crappyice@chef @the jerkman

Not much action but it was a cool experience. Crappy caught one short laker (not 21 inches so it couldn’t be kept). When I left at 11 AM I counted 22 cars parked which seems crazy for such a small reservoir only 116 acres. While we saw a ton of guys out there we didn’t see much action for anyone else either. Gilead in Carmel.

Those bright sunny days without a cloud in the sky are like that. Sometimes you dont catch much out on the ice with the barometer rising . But you guys had fun .

I see you guys all dressed up for the occasion. Chef , Crappie and Biz in their hunting outfits and Jerkman is his cold weather golfing attire . LOL

Have you considered moving the holes?

I was supposed  to ice fish this morning . On the road at 430 am . 15 miles down the road and my fishing partner texts me he is not going to make it . Now he has all the bait at his place including my 2 buckets and 30 bucks in minows and waxies.  35 miles away . Said screw it and went back home . Probably  last hurrah down this way . Temps in the 50s mid week .

20+ holes cut, 12 tip ups, 4 jigging rods, shiners, wax worms, spikes, spoons, pimples, deep water (80+ feet- fishing both off the bottom and right under the ice), shallow water (20’) and one lake trout that was seemingly born seconds prior to capture. Good to be out nonetheless.

And one quite touching moment for Biz-R-OWorld & The Jerkman as they tag-teamed a false flag!

Spoke to one guy on the walk out who caught a 17” lake trout but that was it for him all day.

And one abandoned (and recovered drill...guess who left that behind!

Let be known I got to that flag first. Before Jerkman ripped the line out of my hand to claim the false fish

What time did you guys start and what was the temperature?  I was out this morning, on a lake almost exactly the same size, up on the NW corner of the Adirondack park.  I got a late start today (10 am), because the temp was -5 F when I got up at 6:30.  I decided to stay in my in-laws nice warm "hut".

I should have got out earlier today.  The action was fast, the first 15 minutes, but then dropped off to nothing.  I lost 3 fish on tip ups, as I was setting them up, and landed one smallmouth bass, around 14".

I caught 2 more smallies about that size Saturday, and one decent perch (my mother in law got a fish sandwich from that), and three more similar sized smallies Friday afternoon.  That is about an average take for a long weekend up there.

On Saturday, they had an ice fishing derby on a much bigger lake, a few miles to my west, that drew over 500 participants.  An 11 pound Northern pike took top honors there.  It was tough walking conditions out there Friday and Saturday, but everything was froze up good this morning.

My father in law has that same drill.  It does a very good job.  On Friday, when I drilled 5 holes, we had 12 inches of snow, on 1/2 inch of ice, on 6" of water, on 12" of solid ice.  That made for a sloppy mess drilling the holes.

We fished 8am - 11am. It was 12 degrees when we started, real feel was 5. There were several people out there before us but many more came after us. Not sure if we started too soon? Too late? Or just have no idea what we are doing lol
