I plan to do a co-ownership with my oldest son on all of my pistols / handguns so if something happens to me , they will be his . The Red Hawk has a 2X Leopold scope on it .

I now hunt with 9.5 inch barreled super red hawk in 44 with 240 grain xtp's and 21 grains of 2400 ,I  started with a 357 Blackhawk that I shot 180 grain hard cast over 13.5 grains of 2400 and had very good luck with it.my wife will be going out this coming season with a 6 inch gp-100, hers and mine topped are with ultrdot red dots..

A lot of reliable classics on this thread. I haven't seen one that I'd hesitate to carry in the woods yet. I am kind of surprised there's not a whole lot of newer models and calibers on here though, guess it goes to show newer doesn't mean better

The reason why is very simple. A handgun that will move 180gn projectile at over 1000fps will kill all but a few animals in North America. Elmer Keith knew this along time ago. I enjoy handgun hunting for the simplicity. I like iron sights and hard cast bullets. I only have me to worry about putting the bullet where it needs to be. I don't have to worry about the bullet "performing" or my scope being fogged or my batteries being dead.

I don't disagree one bit. Though I don't currently hunt with it, my number one choice as far as big game hunting goes would be my 6" model 57 for all the reasons you stated. You certainly can't kill game any deader with the hyped up magnums but they did interest me enough to pick up an x frame in the 460 to add to my collection.

I killed my first deer with a DW HV8 in 44 mag they use to come with 2 barrels 1 ported and 1 non-ported so you could shoot lead bullets. i put a lot of rounds though that gun. I use to shoot IHMSA with it. killed 11 deer with that gun. now I mostly use my 629DX when I hunt with a hand gun. I have also killed deer with a 10" tc in 357 max. and 2 rem XP-100's 1 in 35rem and the other in 6mm rem br

Remington XP100 in .35rem topped with a 2-7 Leupold. I've killed a lot of deer with it since 1991 and it's very accurate out to 100yds for my comfortability.

I am somewhat surprised by the support of the 41's. In my opinion there is not a better suited handgun cartridge for deer. The 41 does it all and it does it comfortably. The only reason I have not been using my 41 rem blackhawk is because I love doing something different and hunting with a Glock goes against the grain.

I was just talking about my .41 with my brother-in-law tonight.

I've taken a few deer with my tc contender in 7-30 waters topped with a 2x leupold. I've been contemplating selling it, I have the rifle stock set and reloading dies. If anyone's in the wny area is interested let me know.

Rob-c you should try H-110 or 296 in your 44mag they both burn cleaner than 2400.

Larry thanks for the tip but I don't really have a problem with my 2400. I clean my revolvers after every shooting , plus I like to load down for when we are plinking and I don't have to use magnum primers. 2400 being a bit dirtier is not that big of a deal breaker as I feel it's a more versatile powder for me .

Have a Super Redhawk in 454 topped with a Leupold 2x that I've taken out a time or two, never got anything in front of me.

 

Took it mainly up to the Adirondacks for ease of carry.

 

If I expect porcupines while walking the dog, I'll carry my single-six bisley in 32 H&R mag.

I'm out of the game in NY but I've got a 629 performance center gun Id use of I was a resident.

Off bags it stays in 6" group with no prob at 50 yards w no practice. Nice gun

Use to have a .357 & Couldn't stand to shoot it. Way to loud & to much recoil. Got rid of that & bought one of these.

Browning hi-power in .40 S&W. Has adjustable sights, fun to shoot, & accurate. Ballistics are pretty close to a .357 mag. with a lot less recoil.

 Shot one deer with it at 40 yards with a 180 gr. hollow point. Took two steps & fell over. Deer came in on the blind side. I always carry it during gun season for that reason. A little heavy for a every day carry but carrying in a shoulder holster isn't bad. Well made gun and has been accurate & reliable.

This Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 with 7.5" barrel will see the deer woods this year. Nics check approved today , get it on permit tomorrow and shooting it Thursday

Thanks turkeyfeathers. Starting to think of going for my permit. Most likely would be S&W and M&P format in either .40 or .45ACP. Both under 8" and 10+1.

 

I am not trying to hijack the thread, but, if you don't ask you don't ask questions you you don't gain knowledge. Would a 9mm be a solid round for deer? For some reason I would rather go with the calibers I posted above.

9mm would be a little light. Look into the Glock 10mm. While researching .44 hunting ammo I saw a bunch of 10 mm too.

Ya know. I though 10mm. But around me the price for ammo is steeper then the .40 or .45ACP. Not sure why.

It's JMO, but a security/self defense handgun is not a hunting option. 9mm, .40 cal, even .45 cal are close-in defense weapons. 25 feet is considered a pretty good range for a well-grouped target.

 It isn't spelled out in the 2015-16 book. In order to stay in compliance with the "safe" act I only have seven in the magazine. I believe they approved 10 round magazines but restrict us to seven rounds. Only makes sense we can all have 10 round magazines but only the criminals will be putting ten rounds in them.

The "Coumo Act" reads like a map to The Lost Arc. Are they going by the same rules on the mags for the "Sport Rifle"? If so then the limit is 10.

 

You said you killed a couple deer using the .40 . May I ask the range?

My thoughts are if I am walking out of the woods or have it on while driving home and happen to get stopped I am not "hunting". If a officer wants to check it and finds out I have more than 7 in the magazine I am in trouble. That is why I only carry seven. I usually have two magazines but never have more than seven in them because of the safe act. Same thing with my 9mm which has a capacity of 10.

 

   As far as the .40 I mostly carry it in case one comes in on the blind side & can't get the long gun up without being spotted, or one comes in really close. The longest shot I made on a deer was approx. 40-45 yds. I don't practice enough to be more proficient. At the time I bought it the 10 mm. had not come out yet and it was the closest thing I could find to the ballistics of a .357. The .44 mag. was way to much gun for me and after the 10mm came out I found that a little beefy as well.

  What I do like about the .40 s&w is the wide variety of loads you can shoot out of it. Mine is pretty accurate, and the knock down power has been good. Probably not for everyone but it works for me.

   But then again I am one of those guys that shoots them with a .223 instead of the higher calibers so it could be taken with a grain of salt. Regardless of the gun or caliber what I look for is accuracy, how I like to shoot it, and will it do the job. ACCURACY is first with me!
