I doubt they have the energy to go where I hunt .... lol. But I have seen U-tube videos by these wackos where they were using remote controlled airplanes during a dove hunt. I couldn't for the life of me figure out exactly what they were supposed to be accomplishing unless maybe they were using them to photograph the hunt participants. This same bunch were running around trying to photograph the faces of the hunters, and just plain being obnoxious jerks. All through the video they were bragging about how they were disrupting this hunt through harrassment, but I didn't see anything going on that was actually doing anything to the hunt itself. Frankly, I would have forgotten about the doves and tried for the airplanes. Now that would have been fun.2 points

you can get the deer data from the DEC for NY... increased average deer weights, decrease in yearling buck harvest, increase in adult buck harvests... the only one you need for NY though is the decrease in the number of yearling bucks harvested which was the intended goal of the program.. which would equate to AR's being successful in the areas they have been implemented... you can check the data in the other 22 states as well... it is there... what you won't find is any data saying they have been unsuccessful in achieving their intended goal.. which is always to decrease the number of yearlings killed and increase the number of mature bucks to create balance in the age structure... which is always a benefit to the herd. The only reason that AR's would not work would be due to hunters not adhering to the AR law... or maybe a disease taking over the herd and killing all the deer. The data is there if you really want it... but like I said before hunters that don't like AR's really don't care what benefit they do or don't have for the deer herd or how successful they are, sadly there is no proof in the world that is going to change that... For me personally, as soon as someone can prove that they are not successful and beneficial... I will stop supporting them.1 point

Hi, Doc. It actually varies, like everything else. But, compared to firearm ammo, still much cheaper. The air rifle I have has excellent power. Springers, and some Nitro Pistons, you can get for a very reasonable price these days. My personal preferences for hunting, are either the .22, or better yet, the .25.1 point

I agree. Todays air rifles actually have some serious power, and, considering how many shots you get, are still a good deal on ammo.1 point

Hot spots on public land all tend to change when hunting season starts and hunters are stomping thru the woods, so it doesnt pay to be too close to another hunter just to be near a perceived hot spot, especially during rifle season. Deer tend to take a day by day approach once they realize they are sharing the woods with humans...1 point

Not to denigrate your vast expertise on the subject, but what you are really trying to say is prion. Sorry, didn't mean to butt in, but I just thought you might want to use the correct terminology.1 point

That would be stupid. Lets chase deer that are laying low and hiding from hunters around the woods to in front of hunters. I dont think anti's have an ounce of brain in there head.1 point

If you all look really hard at the photo.. that is a 10 not an 8.. look really hard!! just kidding, but made you look... ears on mature whitetail are about 6" so: G1 = 8x2 = 16 G2 = 10x2 = 20 G3 = 6x2 = 12 Beams based on ears about 22x2= 44 C1 = 5 C2 = 4.5 C3 = 3.5 C4 = 3 spread = 20? gross score 1441 point

See this is what makes you and others your own worst enemies in AR discussions. You invest a lot of common sense, pro AR arguments and then can't seem to resist throwing zingers like what is shown above. That term "selfish" is one of the most randomly thrown around words on this forum, and I got to tell you it does absolutely nothing but firmly entrench those that you are trying to persuade.1 point

Usually I see them moving from where they are to where they want to be...lol I don't think thee is any tie to compass diretion. In my mind at this time of year it is about current PREFERED food source and bedding location. Identify what they are hitting or better yet will be hitting for food and get between their pillow and their kitchen. Rut---all bets off..lol1 point

Credit to Hunting Beast forum: We have been talking about the moon and how it effects deer movement quite a bit lately. I really don't understand what the gravitational effect does to deer, I just know that they are more active when the moon is over head, or under foot. I was a doubter until my friend Andrae kept out hunting me in the mornings outside the rut, a time when most bucks are bedded before daylight. I questioned him about it and he confided that he uses the moon as a guide as to when the deer are moving late in the morning. If the moon is over head, or directly below, and its the 1st couple hours of daylight, he said the bucks will be late getting back to there beds... I have never known Andrae to be one to believe in pixie dust, but I still had my doubts even though he had knocked down some incredible animals on those moon above/below mornings. That night while staying at Andraes he asked me to look at the times and dates on his trail camera photo's and compare them to the guide. It was amazing at how accurate the guide was. The one discrepancy it had was thrown out when we checked the weather for that day. It was the perfect test cause Andrae was running 2 dozen cameras in 2 states and if we pencil graphed the peak movements they coincided with peak movements on the chart ( Jeff Murry moon guide chart ) I have heard some say that moon directly above has more effect than below, but I see good results with both. Andrae believes the over head days are better. ( red ) Weather will change results. And I, nor Andrae believe everything the guide or moon charts try to sell. Big bucks hold tight midday regardless of moon most of the time... However, you will see smaller bucks and does feeding midday during peak moon. I also believe that mature bucks will rise and enter there staging area prior to dark regardless of moon, but may move farther beyond the staging area before dark on the right moon phase which can be key for those set ups where you can't get close enough. Anywho... Here are the mornings this season I would want to be perched over the top of a mature bucks bed waiting for daylight based on the moon: RED=OVERHEAD SEPT 7 SEPT 8 SEPT 9 SEPT 21 SEPT 22 Sept 23 OCT 7 OCT8 OCT 9 OCT 21 OCT 22 OCT23 NOV 6 NOV 7 NOV 8 NOV 9 NOV 20 NOV 21 NOV 22 NOV23 DEC 6 DEC 7 DEC 8 DEC 9 DEC 20 DEC 21 DEC 22 JAN 5 JAN 6 JAN 7 JAN 19 JAN 20 JAN 21 Here are the best days for evening sits... By best, I mean the bucks should move earlier than normal, so this should be good for those spots where you can't quite get close enough for daylight shooting due to noise, vision, wind, or some other factor. It does kind of cheapen the rarity and challenge of legitimately getting a "decent" buck when there are people out there that are raising (manufacturing) these kinds of grotesque monsters. Yes, I realize that the records keeping organizations have restrictions of fair chase requirements to try and maintain the validity of true honest hunted animals. Still it seems that these versions of "Frankendeer" have a negative reflection on the natural quality of true wild animals. Obviously there is a market for the semen of these animals, and eventually it would seem that the end result would be for some guy with deep pockets to harvest a genetically manufactured deer, and place the mounted head in his trophy room with any story attached to it that he wanted. I probably have less quarrel with the guy who raises and develops these genetic monsters than some of the end users of his product. It just seems a shame that there really is a market for this kind of thing and that anyone who calls themselves a hunter would engage in this strange practice of creating your trophy. I don't know, I probably am in the minority with that attitude, but I am still a believer in hunting the species the way they have developed in nature. I have no interest in buying a manufactured trophy for my wall or for any other purpose. To me that cheapens the whole activity of hunting.1 point
