  1. My thoughts? Not to sound like a dick, but before you pulled that trigger you should have thought of the concenquences. You should have skined it,quartered it and put it on ice.Or donated it.You got internet access and you can see the 3 day forecast. You know if you kill it you have to follow up on it.And the butchering process is next step after the drag out the wood.Sorry but i don't agree with letting it hang if it is above 40.And i cut mine up right away any how.Even if it is 40*. Your meats spoiled.Wasted.

  3. I've had my CCW over 12 years now. I carry every single day, hunting or not. No exceptions. The one time you leave it home and need it, defeats the purpose of its existence in its entirety.

  4. Well here is my addition, Headed out to the stand with my cousin knowing that this buck was in the immediate area and with the intention of only shooting him as we had an encounter with him two days ago but with no shot. We were hoping to get the hunt on video but things happened to fast, we were sitting in stand on a small patch of woods just off a field and had not seen a deer all morning and knew he was on a doe the night before so may of been bedded down and hanging tight. Just about 8am i head some leaves crunching right in front of us and all i saw was a huge deer with a huge rack trotting trough the woods about 70 yards away and he was on a mission. I wispered to my cousin huge buck huge buck as i put the scope on him. He then stopped and looked towards us and right before my cousin was about to say just shoot him because the camera wasnt on or even towards him i fired and he kicked and tore off. We were both so pumped standing in our stands and were about positive i put a solid shot on him we were shaking in the stand. This was by far the biggest buck either of us had seen in the woods. We got down and found where i hit him and had really good blood and found him piled up about 60 yards away. He grossed 144 1/2" with a 20 3/4" inside spread.

  6. New to this forum. First season hunting. So far got a turkey (jake) with shotgun and a doe with shotgun opening day. Learned how to dress and quarter game by reading a lot and a few tips from my younger brother and by just hiving it a try. Absolutely love the outdoors always have.

  7. Well my neighbor who plants corn on my property finally decided that he is going to cut the 30 acre cornfield. He made 2 passes around the field today before a chain broke on the corn chute. Talked to him and he said he would finish tomorrow. Needless to say, I'm heading over there in a few minutes to hunt. Hope one of the big boys get hungry and decide to step out before dark. And truth be told, I'll smoke a doe if she walks out too. Hahaha, I love venison!

  8. I rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6! Smith&Wesson 9mm don't leave home without it. Sometimes in the field I carry a Smith 38 with a 4" barrel instead of the 9. It's amazing when you see people say to carry an extra knife, flashlight etc but would hesitate to carry a sidearm. Unlike the west we really don't have the to worry so much about bears and mt lions but there are still animals with rabies or could be wound, protecting the young etc...and the most deadly creature in the woods, The 2 legged kind!!!

  17. Not true, New york State now considers all BB and pellet guns as firearms. (page 16 of your hunting guide). And if you want to use one for hunting, the airgun has to produce a velocity of at least 600 feet per second. Since they are considered firearms that just throws up red flags and the stores probably just stay away from it.

  18. With the below freezing temps and how long it took to get up to 50 and how fast the days cool back off, it being inside and out of the direct sun. I think you are fine. I do have to ask though why do some claim to skin them right away in armer temps. When in the past I have seen these freezing nights and above 40 days I leave hide right on it helps hold the cold right in the meat. Think about it the hide holds the heat in the deer creates to stay warm right? So if its cold its going to hold the cold in as well.

  19. My neighbor stopped by yesterday and mentioned that he's had does and a buck in his yard every afternoon. I went out about 2:45. He has a sloping hill of grass that leads down into the woods. At the top is a little hut with chairs. Kind of nice, especially in the cold weather. (Not that today is cold.) I was out for about 15 minutes when another hunter stopped by. He thought the hut would be empty, but he sat down and chatted. He got his buck this morning and was waiting for a doe. Sunset was at 4:28 today. At about 4:15 two does came out of the woods at the bottom of the hill. One turned into the tall grass, and the other into the field. I waited for a side shot, and hit it just next to the shoulder. It hopped up, turned around and fell. It was dead by the time we walked down there. The slug when right through the heart. It was getting dark so the guy gutted it for me, although I think I could have done it. He also got his ATV and drove the carcass out to my truck. Hopefully, I don't screw up the butchering and I get some good sausage for him. The temp is 54* right now and it's only going down to about 30* overnight. Should I skin and butcher the deer tomorrow? I'm concerned that it's too hot to hang.

  20. Native Americans let their deer hang for well over a week in the area I live, your meat should be ok. Like WNY send...if the meat smells bad you are in trouble. Wish you all the luck.

  21. You could go to a taxidermist and get a rug made. I am not going to do that unless i shoot a piebald or albino. Some people tan strip the hair off it and turn it into leather while others take the hair for fly tying. Most people throw it away or bury it. There are tons of things you can do with deer hide.

  22. I shot my buck the evening before Thanksgiving. The taxidermist came and caped it out tonight. It hung in my garage, with the doors closed, etc and it stayed cool in there, never got above 44 from the thermometer in there. I also put a 10lb bag of ice in the chest cavity Thanksgiving morning, the ice did not melt. Meat is fine and the deer will be cut up soon. As for yours, it all depends on the temperatures it sat in. The good thing is that the high temps during the day this time of year dont last long. You may be alright. As has been said, smell it and inspect it.

  24. He said 27 degrees at night. Meaning that was the temperature at night. And the ice never melted even with higher temps during the day

  26. I did real well this year too. I Gave away a 4pt. minus the rack and tender loins. It went to a family of 4 who really needed it. Me and the land owner skinned and quartered it out and dropped it off to them , we even stopped and picked up some freezer paper and tape for them. .....It was like we handed them $1000......Felt good. If you don't need it donate it .

  27. There is no reason to bash anyone. If you think you're a perfect hunter great. But I promise you are wrong. Give the person a break. What a bunch of Sorry about the language but there seems to be way to many perfect hunters on here.l " Note from moderator: inappropriate language edited out.

  29. Back in October I found a large 8-pt while out scouting one afternoon. I contacted the Region 8 office several days later and talked to an ECO for 10 minutes on the phone. He told me thad their job is to regulate the "deer on the hoof" (what's in the freezer), not the antlers. He said this subject has a lot of gray areas but it's best to call them in a situation like this. In a nutshell, he said that it would be up to the investigating officer's disgretion. At the end of the conversation he went on to say that this deer sounded like a car kill so it would be OK to go ahead and remove the antlers. I told him that I already had and he responded by saying to contact them first in the future. Honestly, after talking to him I was more confused about this matter than I was before??? I emailed another Region 8 ECO and here is the reponse that I got : "Hello Jason, there are no regulations that prohibit the removal of antlers from a dead deer provided the deer was not illegally killed."

  31. Well, I hung that new stand I posted earlier in the week. Sat that evening, and had the spike, he got spooked off. Next morning, saw a nasty 8 point not 15 yards from my stand, followed by a 3 point, then a 4 point(ironically) then a doe. Last night.......... frigging crazy. road hunters everywhere, people partying in a house that we lease out, and the cows got loose so everybody was running trucks and fourwheelers and just being crazy. I was pissed. my girlfriend told me to slide out, and go to one my other spots, but by the time i got out of there and drove to my closest spot it would have been dark. So i waited it out....... At 5:00, i hear BOOM! To close to comfort. Hear a diesel truck start and a wooooohoooo, truck take off, then another shot. I ran out of the stand, saw the truck, but couldnt get anything but red truck diesel. I was pissed right off, and sat at the general area I heard the shot, and no one came around. Anything that close, was our land. Not happy. So, decided to take a morning off, hang with the kids, family, do a few chores. Have thanksgiving dinner, and sit at that stand just because I had a feeling it would be alot more quite. (Thanksgiving is a free meal for the worthless roadhunters) So, at 3:35, I was at thet stand. Walking in, Im hearing dogs barking, people hooting and hollering, and im saying wtf, and other colorful words....., but decide to get in there, and wait it out. At 415, I hear some brushing, then Spike shows up. He got spooked, ran back in the swamp, and 3 doe walk out where he ran in. I took the biggest of the 3, at a meer 286 yards. All tags filled but muzzleloader. Good day for me. Oh yeah, it was over a one mile drag, then a half hour ride back home. She scaled out at 132 lbs dressed. What a fat ass.

  34. Shot this buck tonight, he is my best to date. Hes not the biggest Ive seen this season, but I am more than tickled with him. Cantrell taxidermy will be mounting him for me. Heres the story... Yesterday, I hunted a farm that I hadnt set foot on this season. My buddy suggested that I go sit in a stand that he had set this year, so thats where I went. On my way in, I kicked up a nice buck, but didnt get a good look at him. I set up in the stand and got down at 4:15, as I had to be home by 5:30. As I was walking out, down a tractor road up on a hill overlooking a cow pasture, I saw 15 doe come out from a thick swatch of brush and head out into the back part of the pasture. I had no time to mess with them, but ranged the spot where they were at 186 yards. Fast forward to this afternoon. My buddy and I set up a new ground blind on another part of the farm, and the idea was I was going to sit it this afternoon. When we returned to the farm a bit later, I noticed a guy in his ladder stand about 140 yards across the field. Damn, couldnt sit there, so I headed toward the stand I sat in yesterday. When we got to the spot where I saw the does, I showed him what I had seen and we discussed what the plan for today was. He was going to another ground blind, just down the hill from where we were and I decided I would stay there and see if I couldnt get lucky and catch the does heading into the back pasture again. I wasnt sure if it would work, as I was pretty exposed, but I thought maybe the distance was going to help me out. I was texting with my buddy asking if we had seen anything, and we both said no. As I put my phone away I spotted a doe coming into the pasture. I got low and moved up to the fence post that I could use as a rest. The doe moved into a swail in the pasture and I was waiting for her to emerge when I saw a rack come out from the brush to the left, right where I had ranged the does at 186. I switched my attention to him and as he put his head down to feed, I held just over his back right above the shoulders and slowly squeezed the trigger. POP! Are you kidding me! Misfire! The powder had gotten damp from loading up the previous day, then having 20 degree temps this morning and 50s in the afternoon. The buck looked over at the noise, then put his head back down. I got low and went back to my backpack, yanked the breech plug and pushed the load out. I threw everything out of my pack to get what i needed and reloaded, got back up to the post and slowly stood up. The buck was gone. My buddy called and asked what that pop was, so I told him, and as we were talking, the buck headed up out of the swail, i threw my phone, pulled up and grunted at him. I set my crosshairs in the same spot as he stood there slightly quartering to and let him have it. Boom! Through the smoke I saw the hit take him off of his feet. He got back up and headed into the brush. I picked my phone up and told him what happened, and he headed up to me. We went out and found blood, but thought we would give him time. I decided to range the shot, 180 yards on the dot from the post I rested on to my buddy standing where the deer was. We gave it an hour and followed a 50 yard blood trail to the other side of the brush right to my buck! Hes a solid 2 1/2 year old, with a very symmetrical rack. I couldnt be happier! What a vacation so far, a great doe yesterday morning and this guy tonight! Gonna take Thanksgiving off and get back after it Friday.

  37. It was an awesome opening morning sit, although very short. As soon as I climbed into my stand I had deer in the 50 acre field I was overlooking. I had hardwoods behind me with a standing cornfield on the other side. The leaves in the woods were perfect to alert me of any movement with a nice frost from cold weather. After watching deer move around field right at first light I heard the "crunching" of leaves and this fella came out of the woods 50 yds to my right. Gave me a great opportunity to make a clean shot and I was able to make the most of it. He is not a giant but my second buck ever taken and first since 2007, rough score of 115. My biggest to date.

  38. I just have a problem with not having the right to bear (Carry) arms just because it's bow season. That law automatically assumes that you are carrying with the intent of using the arm illegally. If that is the case then why issue carry permits at all? Just me.
