Well I'ved owned my property for 20 hunting seasons now. Much has changed been improved and grown up. Passed a milestone this year taking the 300th deer off the property with the first deer of gun season, and added a few more in the last two weeks. Some large bucks and a lot of smaller ones have been taken as well as the plentiful doe! The Basic group is ten hunters, with occasional guests. Most are friends and family and all have helped reach this milestone and looking back at the logbook and reading the stories bring back a flood of memories. How many out there keep records for their camp? Do you manage your land or just let nature take its course? Camp is the main reason i seem to hunt now and my camp lost a good friend and hunter to a freak accident this summer a man taken way to early in life who touched countless peoples lives threw his teaching and coaching. He is the second of the first hunters to pass and i am afraid he won't be the last as several are approching advanced age. They are of course given the best stands close to the cabin and my main goal is just to keep them hunting. the knowledge, and the stories they have are amazing! Best of luck the rest of the season to all those who cherish their camp!!7 points

Well here is my addition, Headed out to the stand with my cousin knowing that this buck was in the immediate area and with the intention of only shooting him as we had an encounter with him two days ago but with no shot. We were hoping to get the hunt on video but things happened to fast, we were sitting in stand on a small patch of woods just off a field and had not seen a deer all morning and knew he was on a doe the night before so may of been bedded down and hanging tight. Just about 8am i head some leaves crunching right in front of us and all i saw was a huge deer with a huge rack trotting trough the woods about 70 yards away and he was on a mission. I wispered to my cousin huge buck huge buck as i put the scope on him. He then stopped and looked towards us and right before my cousin was about to say just shoot him because the camera wasnt on or even towards him i fired and he kicked and tore off. We were both so pumped standing in our stands and were about positive i put a solid shot on him we were shaking in the stand. This was by far the biggest buck either of us had seen in the woods. We got down and found where i hit him and had really good blood and found him piled up about 60 yards away. He grossed 144 1/2" with a 20 3/4" inside spread.4 points

Got this doe 5 minutes after legal shooting light on Thanksgiving. She and 6 other does were pushed out of another thicket into the spot I was. They all stopped at 80 yds and looked around and I picked the biggest one and pulled the trigger. 30 yds blood trail and there she was.3 points

That's awesome, congrats. My dad and I also keep a log each year. This is his 42nd year hunting whitetail in NY. He has 25 NY bucks. He had big gaps of years between getting bucks when he hunted the catskills for many years. Since we got access to property locally in 1993, my Dad has done much better. Probably like 15+ bucks in the last 20 years. This is my 13th year hunting whitetail in NY. I got my 6th NY buck this year. 5th in the last 6 years. I didn't hunt much from the ages of 18-22. We each have a book, where we put a 1 page story about our success of each deer with a few pictures. It's cool looking back at my deer from years ago. It's even cooler, to look back at my Dad's book and see stories from the late 1960's, etc. Those were on a typewriter lol.2 points

After a brutal morning sitting in the wind and snow yesterday, I went with a small group to do some drives to fill a few doe tags. We went to the Brookfield statelands, and only saw two older gentlemen trying to fill their doe tags. We set them right up in a couple of traditional escape routes, and they both got nice does to complete their seasons. You would have thought we gave them a million dollars they were so happy about us letting them sit on our drive. The group I went with filled all four doe tags they needed filled for that unit, and even shot a bonus eight point buck. Although I am not much of a drive hunter, I don't mind helping guys out late in the season, or on days when the weather is so nasty. I always walk because I like to see people bag their deer, and truthfully, I don't care if I shoot any with a gun or not. Number of hunters continues to drop in this area. After the first day, the roadside parking is almost non-existant. Mostly groups of hunters just pushing the woods day after day. I just think that people have put deer hunting a lot farthur down their list of priorites, or have just quit because they are too afraid to find new places to hunt after their farm they hunted forever gets sold.2 points

My club has been in existance since the 50's. My father became a member in 58 and I started in 68. I wish we had logs started in the beginning of the camp, just to see what the harvests were, number of guys, number of bucks and pts taken. Just seeing the names and reminiescing is what camps are all about. "Remember the time...." seems to be the order of every night stories in camp and keeps it's members alive, even when they've been long past. What's sad is seeing more and more of the area developing, and cutting in on the areas for deer to run, and where we once put on drives, are new beautiful homes. But, hey, we can still hunt, have plenty of acres, we know who's in the woods, and take hunting seriously and have fun at the same time. Congratulations on your milestone and here's to the next 300!!!1 point

Its not illegal to hunt within 500 feet of a road. You have to be off of the maintained shoulder and cannot shoot over the road.1 point

Time to change things up I would say. Seems the deer have you guys patterned instead of you patterning them. If your following the same ritual going to the same spots, at the same time, leaving at the same time they got you all figured out. Try going out just before your normal time of coming in. Confuse them, throw something different at them. Heck I wouldnt be afraid to have someone come with you and walk out at your regular scheduled leaving time while you stay put. Deer hears, sees, smell someone leaving they think they are in the clear while you wait in ambush.1 point

My hunting club has been around since 1991, same property, and the 2 original founders are still there hunting. We've had as many as 11 members but now have 8. I've only been a member since 2000, so I don't know the total amount of deer taken. I do know in 2004 we set a hunting camp best when we shot 43 deer. I'm sure we are close to 300 total and I could prob call the president now and he could give me an exact count. He has kept track in a log book since the inception. He records sex, weight, weather conditions, hunter, weapon, and stand location. I'm looking forward to passing my memories on to my kids, like he has done with us.1 point

Nowhere in what you posted does it say "shot only". What you posted is simply stating that you can use shotguns to hunt furbearers at night with any shot size... That dosent say "shot only", "no slugs", or anything to that affect...1 point

Hang on, can you clear this part of it up? You couldnt see his body, but it was a safe, clean shot? Is this just bad grammar and Im misunderstanding what you were trying to say? I sure hope so.1 point

Funny!!! I remember as a kid 10 or 12 years old. We took the family summer trip to a camp in Maine. It was our 4th or 5th year in a row going there. Me and my little brother were fishing on the dock (catching pan fish like ya read about). My Zebco 202 got the line all tangled up, so my old man, who didn't fish, walked down, about 6 Genny's into it, and a Pal-Mal hanging out of his mouth. He fixed my reel and gave it one cast to show me that it worked. All the sudden a game warden comes from around this little cove, in a small motor boat. He had obviously been watching us. He docks up and writes the old man a ticket for fishing without a license.$35.00 Circa 1976 was a lot of money. My father lights into the guy and I thought it was go time. Things calmed down and the warden went on his way. I remember later that day, my father now about 9 Genny's into it saying to us " hope you liked Maine cuz I aint pay'n that fine and we aint comm'n back" and we never did. LOL!!!1 point

Put a new ladder stand together today, put it up overlooking golden rod fields and with total view of farmers corn fields next doors. Have been sitting in the blowing wind and snow for two hours so far. The magic hour approaches as my hands are mixed numbness and sharp prickly pain. My eyes are tearing non stop, nose running like crazy and my mind starts to wander. Ah a day in the life of a deer hunter. Lol! C'mon deer!1 point

Is that the best you have to offer? Run back to your mom? Or is it because you realize you're supporting a tyrannical enforcement which is outside the spirit of the law, so you are changing the topic. Four year olds are not actually dexterous enough to cast out a pole. They REQUIRE adult help for this. Saying an adult putting a line in the water and handing a pole to a 4 year old equates to the adult fishing is like saying that a person holding a beaker is a chemist. They are simply not correct assessments. But people like you gladly watch as a man is ticketed for something YOU AS A SPORTSMAN should be glad to see, him introducing another generation to the outdoors. But you're so high and mighty because "DA LAW IS DA LAW" herp derp. So you go ahead, you be glad some ******** gave a guy trying to show kids how to fish a ticket. I'll be disgusted, and you'll still be a *****.1 point

Man, stop tripping, he went with poles and kids to the water, that's fishing...period.... and I do have a kid and I'm telling him get a license before you grab those poles and a cooler before you hit the road...don't get hung up on the kids factor here, you are going to the shore/boat with poles and nets, that's fishing bro whether you catch anything or not.....1 point

no. they cannot. if licensed, and tags filled, then yes, but un licensed, no. think you should read regulations. read the first highlighted Q. Accompanying Q: Can I take my young child (or an unlicensed person) with me while I am deer hunting? A: Yes, and we highly recommend it! Just make sure the child (or unlicensed person) is not hunting or assisting in any aspect of the hunt (like driving deer). Bring an extra pair of binoculars and plenty of snacks. Have a good time! Q: Can my son or daughter hunt small game while I hunt deer? A: Yes, but your son or daughter must have a Junior Hunting license and cannot actively participate in the big game hunt (including driving deer). Q: Can I participate in someone else's hunt after I have filled all of my deer tags? A: Yes. A licensed hunter who has filled his or her tags may continue to participate in the hunt, including driving of deer, but may not attempt to shoot a deer.1 point

The EnCon officers aren't usually the ones that check the deer at the butcher... it is usually a biologist that couldn't care less that there is corn in the deers teeth... they are there to check numbers, sexes and ages.1 point

Ok. So here's my story on my harvest on opening weekend. Saturday morning 11/17/12 I get into my stand at the edge of a cut soybean field at about 5:45am. It's cold and no wind. As the horizon lightens up a few doe start moving about but way to far away - 250+ yards. Not comfortable with a shot so I sit and wait. About 1 hour after legal shooting light two small doe come out of the woods behind me to my left. They mull about eating about 75 yards out in the cut soybean field. They never present a broadside shot. So I watch them mull about. They walk in front of my stand but directly in front there is a tree with branches going every which way so I wait patiently. I decide to take one of them once they present a shot. After about 20 minutes, one of them turns broadside at about 100 yds and I squeeze the trigger. She runs off toward the tree line in the same area I shot my 5 pointer in 2010 and I'm think that crap, another hour to look for her. About 20 minutes later i get down and start tracking her. I get to the spot and just like 2 years ago see no blood. I start walking further away from my stand toward the direction of where I found my 5 pointer and lo and behold she's lying in the tall grass, not even 20 yards from where she was hit. That was an easy track. Here she is lying at my feet. The wound is the exit wound from my 30-06. Now Sunday morning (11/18/12) I get into my same stand about 6:00am. Again it's cold, no wind and frost on the ground. About 30 minutes later several shots ring out - before legal shooting light. I sit and see nothing other than some doe over 400 yards away. At about 7:00am out of the corner of my eye to my right I see a buck walking toward my direction along the edge of the soyfield at about 70 yards. I glass him to check his antlers and I count only 4. I continue to watch him as he gets closer and I see 5 antlers, then 6. I decide at that moment if he presents a shot I will take it. He continues to walk across in front of my stand and he gets behind the same tree with the branches in front of me blocking any shot. He stops there and feeds for several minutes. It's about 7:15 now and my legs start shaking. I have my rifle scope on him following him and he stares right at me. I'm thinking - Crap! He made me. He stares at me for several minutes and then looks down and continues walking. I find an opening to my left and I wait for him to get to that spot. He slowly walks forward and gets into the opening. He starts to quarter away from me. I put the cross hairs on his left shoulder and squeeze the trigger. He stumbles to the ground and goes 7 yards and drops right in the soyfield. I could not believe it. I surely thought he was going to bolt. I wait a few minutes and then I hear crunching behind me. I look and see a small spike coming right under my stand to my left and gets into the open field. He sees the one I just dropped and slowly makes his way over to him. He snorts, stomps, and circles him. After 10 minutes he finally walks away grazing. I tie my rifle to the tow rope (or at least I thought I secured it) and start to lower my rifle when suddenly I see the rope unravel and watch my rifle fall to the ground 15 feet and hit the ground with force snapping the rear stock completely off. I start cursing myself. I get down and look at my rifle - scope and barrel was intact but the rear stock broken off. My emotions went from elation to depression. I slowly made my way over to the buck I shot. I look at his rack and notice he's actually had a small seventh point about 1" long but I don't care and I chalk him up in my mind as my first 7 pointer. I go back from depression to elation. Now it gets better. I see the exit hole but no entrance hole. The exit hole was right in the middle of his chest. I then see what appeared to be a flesh wound on his right rear leg that seemed fresh. I'm looking at that and thinking - No way I did that! I flip this brute over and look for the entrance hole and after looking for several seconds I finally find it right above his left front shoulder exactly where I put the cross hairs on him. I was relieved. I'm wondering if that earlier shot I heard caused the flesh wound or was it from fighting?? I don't know and I don't care. He's mine and he's in the freezer next to his girlfriend.1 point

"Republicans had blocked the bill before the election, fearing that passage would boost the re-election prospects of the bill's Democratic sponsor, Montana Sen. Jon Tester." That kind of nonsense is one of the reasons this country is doomed. Its all about them (politicians and their careers) , never about whats best for the rest of us, and BOTH parties are just as guilty as the other.1 point
