  1. Had a really productive weekend. We brush hog all trails and began to reclaim some of the old apple trees. The previous owner let the property go for years and the areas around the apple trees have become over grown. I got the brush hog in there and hope to clean up around more of the trees later this summer. We also planted some corn and tilled two more plots which we will plant later this summer. Even got a chance to smoke some ribs. Couldn't be happier!! Well maybe with some rain.

  2. Friday I worked all day. Came home mowed the yard the went to the hospital. My bro and sis-law were having a baby. Well she didnt have it until almost 3am. All that time im thinkin how sat is my last chance to hunt this may. So we left the hospital at just about 4am, raced home grabbed my gear and heading for the hills. Made it to my spot a little after 5am. Heard some goggles way way off in the distance. Made some calls and just sat there. Going on 24hrs no sleep I dozzed off for a few minutes. Then I woke to some loud leaf crunchin. I awoke jerking my head in that direction. 4 jakes at 35yrs (came in silent) looking at me. They dont spoke, I slowly grab my gun thats sitting on the ground next to me as im lifting it to my shoulder they start look at me, bang!! 2nd bird of the yr down!! So pumped!! I grabbed the bird, tagged it drove home an went to bed!! Never forget that hunt!!

  3. I played host/guide to a buddy of mine this morning. After a grueling 2 hours of having this bird drumming within 50-60 yds of us with a hen we were able to bust a cap in his butt. The 2.5 ounces of Nitro Hevi-Shot from his 10 guage did a number on Mr. Tommy's noggin @ 40 yds. Nice 2 year old...20 lbs., 9.5" beard, 7/8" spurs This makes kill #6 for me this spring. Gotta love it...!!! The birds are still henned up big time here in my area...

  5. Terrible outcome to a bad situation. Cannot help but fault the cops....an innocent citizen, in this case a hostage, of sorts, was killed by a cop. That should NOT happen.

  6. Terrible, In a perfect world the cop would have backed out. But who knows how it really transpired.

  7. In my rush to reply last night, I forgot to mention you can also accomplish depth control, and getting your bait away from the boat by using Dipsey Divers, or Jet Divers off a flat line. No need to invest 1000's of dollars in offshore gear. Just clip one of these babies on, and wait for the fish to bite!

  8. Went out Saturday morning to Gr Island, needed a change of scenery from the tight lipped gobblers in the southern tier and the long AM drive. Didn't hear a gobble until 7 am when out of frustration I started calling a little more aggressively. Got a gobble very close!! I was in a blind on a field with 2 hen and 1 jake decoy out. called in 4 jakes had them right in front of the blind , so I decided to screw with em. I clucked loud on my slate and boom another gobble from the woods, there was a long beard with them. Killed him 5 minutes later, the bastard tried to sneak behind the blind. 19.8 lbs., 9-9/16" beard, 1" spurs. Bird #2 AND I'm tagged out!!Unbelievable as this season I haven't seen or heard many birds, but you can never kill one from the couch. Now what am I going to do all Memorial weekend?

  15. Hunters don't need to take really long range shots most of the time. Just stalk within reasonable shooting range and save yourself a lot of cash.

  16. My season is done...I went out to the clover plot blind and took my new good luck charm with me....I heard birds up the hill in the big woods and we talked a bit at 6:30...then nothing at 8:12 I texted our daughter and said I was hunting and bored to tears... hit send and looked up...there were the three jakes making a beeline for the jake decoy...they were right in front of me 12yrds ...but managing no shot for they were on alert...this guy spooked and turned straight away from me in the only opening...head down...Crap!!...the other 2 followed and I thought that's it...but he circled through the dogwood brush and popped out in the clover plot behind the decoy..I shot...28yrds... when he stretched his head to eat I got home and Mr B said congrats..is it the one that gobbled here at the house...I never heard a gobble...and asked how long ago...for these birds came in from the northeast...he said an hour...dang I believe I managed to call them in from across the road ....still a jake but bigger than the last....so this year one bird at camp and one at home and some great pics and good video...good season all said and done PS...the spur looks short of a 1/2 in but not...cameras are made for rt handed ppl...I'm left handed...I was having a hard time holding yard stick and clicking shutter while holding camera in rt hand.

  17. I don't even own a pistol, so if I want to carry a firearm, I have to get one of those long trench coats.

  18. Love those occasional "deer nose" pictures. In case any of us think the deer are not aware of our cameras, those pictures always help to tell us that we are not fooling anybody .... lol. We're just fortunate that most deer are tolerant of our gadgets in their livingroom.

  19. Which defeats the point of carrying in the first place. You cant tell someone to wait a second so you can rack a round. Mine is almost always carried with one in the chamber and the hammer uncocked. All I have to do is cock, unlock and pull the trigger. Most guys wont even carry the way I do, they are always cocked and locked.

  20. bigger food plot, less feeders and mineral licks.....and a copy of the law book.

  21. Feeding Deer and Mineral Licks are illegal 24/7, 365. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7197.html * Unless your in Sullivan County (that is still a grey area until the DEC amends the law due to a lawsuit). http://www.outdoornews.com/November-2012/Feeding-ban-appealed-struck-down-in-Sullivan/ Still blows my mind how many people don't know the laws. I suggest you get rid of the feeder and licks before you get yourself into trouble. Everything else your doing sounds good, clover is awesome. Planting tree's is great providing you can keep them alive till they get big enough to produce fruit.

  22. There may be another Jake hitting the dirt soon...Time is getting tight and the hunting isn't showing a lot of results....I have seen one mature bird at camp but couldn't get him to close the distance...I've been hunting with a tore up knee...so them coming to me is a must at this point...here at home I had a hen drop off the roost into my lap...that was exciting...her wing covered the top of the barrel of my gun....and I managed to keep my cool...for she flew down after a bunch had flown down 150yrds directly in front of me....but even though she fed on beetles around me nothing else came in I moved the cam and then decided to hunt that area this a.m....He!! no..it was so cold out there...in the high 20's...decided to go out for a 10-12 hunt....dumb! dumb! dumb!....saw...heard nothing...checked cam and pulled the card pics are 15yrds in front of my blind....At this point due to time constraints and plenty of jakes around...that one jake may have to hit dirt ...I can't eat the beard and rarely get a fall turkey due to bow hunting...this is the first year I've seen twice as many Jakes while hunting than hens....hhmmm that's interesting...be nice if we could hunt all day ....lol..... they are probably down there right now eating clover....

  23. We've all been there. The bird I miss last year was right off the roost darn near into my lap. I probably had a better chance of beating it with a stick than the 12 gauge at that range. It never dawned on me that he was that close. It was one long walk of shame home. Best part, neighbor goes..I heard you shoot...what'd you get?
