  1. If it ever comes down to killing livestock and calling it hunting, I'll opt to shoot either beef cattle or a hog.......more meat and better eating.

  2. When will this ever stop. It is annoying to see this posted over and over. This site is really nosediving.

  5. 4-7-14 Another quicky hike this afternoon turned up #10! It's also the mate to #7 making it my 3'rd set! It wasn't laying only a few feet away from the mate, but it was still not melted out for me to see it then. I don't know if I'm just getting started, or if I'm too far disgusted to put much more effort into this season right now........ check back later with me on that. Adding another dead doe today. Antlers- 10 Sets- 3 Dead bucks- 4 Dead doe/fawns- 12

  6. I've got my first 3 small plots staked-out totaling a little less than an acre. I've decided I'm doing all my work with leg-power so I've gone ahead and gathered-up some old and purchased some new supplies: -4 gal backpack sprayer -Round-up -Soil tests -Pelletized Lime -Backpack broadcaster/spreader -Spade-fork -Rake -Hoss Lil Double Wheel w/4Teeth -Hoss Disc attachment -Hoss Seeder/Planter attachment -Egyptian Wheat (spring/screens) -Buckwheat (spring/green manure) -Turnips (late summer) -Clover mix (late summer) -Peas (late summer) Going to grab some soil samples tomorrow and spread a load of lime. I surely will hit it again with lime after I check my soil results. I am holding off until then to pick up fertilizer. Looking forward to my first round of spraying next week. Gonna document my progress here for my own sake more than anything else so my apologies if this thread is boring. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. The cameras have been working overtime at the fox den. I've got 1000's of pics from this cam, and 100's of video to go through yet from my Moultrie I have set up from another angle here. It was tough to narrow it down to my 10 favs!

  8. Snuck out this morning to do some scouting/photography. Got in close to a huge winter flock but they went the other way onto posted property when they hit the ground. Eventually a few hens drifted back my way and past my blind. They brought their boyfriend, but he wasn't quite as cooperative about having his picture taken. Peek-a-Boo

  12. As a weapon enthusiast some of these posts really get to me and for that I normally stay out of the argument. But the 2nd amendment is not here to protect hunting rights but to allow the citizens of this great country to (try) and protect themselves from threats foreign and domestic. Ars are a great weapon along with AKs and SKS and ruger 10/22 with stock mods high point cabinets and many many other firearms. It's not just about ARs there is a lot of history being lost from this ban and what goes along with it. A M1A if I am correct is the longest duty weapon to this day and if anyone has done any stock conversions on this it falls into a assault rifle category. This law is a menace to law abiding citizens like I believe we all are and should be repealed. If a country was ever inclined to invade the USA trust me you would benefit if you and all your law abiding neighbors and friends had assault weapons. Sorry for rant but this hits home and really bugs.me. Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk

  13. Actually, what I said was this nonsense is repeating like a bad song. Its annoying that you are the broken record. My time here has dwindled since posters like you and papist have went on these rants about political tin foil topics and personal for-profit agendas. I understand why growie doesnt come around here anymore. People like you ruin it.

  16. Hard to get the true facts from any official of any states and as one post here says numbers are great in one area. Fact is they may be great in one but they are not so great in the many others. It would be nice for all of us to get the real truth. Slim chance on that one.

  18. Look at Fort Hood - no weapons allowed on military base, except to MP's & security staff. Still had a shooting via a personally owned handgun (not an AR [armalite rifle] or an actual assault weapon). Just shows how the law banning something really works for those intending to break them. Even if the worst happens and they manage to ban all guns in civilian hands, the career criminals and gangs will still be armed and running rampant everywhere. Then need more funds to train and hire more police, purchase more police cars, build/expand hospitals, hire doctors, nurses, and ER staff. As a result taxes go up even more. Tell those who live off the land and have to deal with grizzly bears roaming around their home and taking out their cattle, sheep, and goats to turn in all their guns. Tell anyone who lives on our country's borders and have groups of illegals crossing their property to turn in their guns when help is not measured in minutes but hours away. Disarm the gem dealers, so they can be robbed constantly with no defense. The Second Amendment is there for all of us. If the 2nd goes, before you know it we will not have any rights left and now way to get them back.

  20. I never mentioned high fenced hunting at all, I mentioned livestock...which as far as I'm concerned is anything being raised to be killed............and I'm gonna have to go back and check, because I don't remember ever "always" bringing up high fenced hunting.

  23. you have been saying that mature males, since they roam are more likely to spread CWD. That appears to be false since the data shows they are the age class with the smallest increase.
    1 point
  24. looking at what you bolded and the other age classes •adult males from about 8% to nearly 18%, (225% increase) •adult females from about 3% to approximately 7%, (233% increase) •yearling males from about 2% to about 6%,(300% increase) •and yearling females from 2% to about 5%.(250% increase) Based on the post you made it appears the younger age classes has the greatest increase

  25. I posted 3 videos of hunters taking their "firsts". The young lady I did take earlier with the vertical bow and she shot awesome on paper... but after unloading her quiver on deer out of a blind, I had her practice with the x-bow and she was successful as seen in the video with her first shot out of the x-bow. My point with her and I see it at the hunter ed classes etc... dads (the young lady was not my daughter, friend of my buddy) are taking their young daughters and sons out with the crossbow first! Lets face it, it is an awesome option, nice fall weather with a youngster with minimum poundage that they struggle to get back or hand them a cocked crossbow with over 100 LBS of KE? I see it a lot in NJ and I think it is awesome, the young lady I took was frustrated with the vertical and the x-bow put her on top of the world! Saying she is hooked is an understatement and she is still looking to work hard on her vertical... so really, I think it can be a stepping stone for beginners, like I said in the beginning of this thread, same thing with my son, he is an experienced deerslayer now, the x-bow built confidence/experience and he is now looking to take his bow hunting to the next level with the vertical this coming season.

  26. Congrats on hitting double digits. Fine set with really nice color. Came in drenched last evening, 4 miles, only bone were some deer leg bones which will make some nice handles. I'm headed to the areas of the single finds myself, maybe over looked on the first journey. Good luck!

  27. Introducing wolves would be a huge mistake. First off, they would most likely be in the Adirondacks were deer numbers are already low. Most of these areas don't give out doe permits for that reason. There are plenty of tools available to the DEC to control numbers that don't involve increased predator numbers. Other states have been successful at this. How about unlimited doe take in areas that need reductions? Maybe an earn a buck program? Maybe a couple more months of bow season after regular season as doe only?

  28. That kind of sums it all up doesn't it? As long as you've got yours, the hell with anyone else. Well, I would suggest that you look at the prime thrust of the so-called safe act and other gun laws past, present and proposed, and understand the fact that their attacks on the AR style rifles was really only part of it. The rest of it was intended to make the use of any weapon or ammunition in private hands more expensive and more difficult to obtain. If you think for one minute that the constant march of gun and ammunition laws are only aimed at the specific guns that terrify you so much, you are one very deluded individual. Gun control advocates have but one goal which is the complete elimination of all guns in the hands of private citizens. They are very focused on that goal and making annual progress each year and are beginning to get support from those who believe that none of that could ever possibly happen to them and their guns.
    1 point
  29. I don't know but you sure can suggest that during the public comment phase. This sounds counter intuitive but one aspect of the DEC's responsibilities is to fairly distribute the resource. Under that logic you killing ten deer is not preferred over ten hunters killing one deer each. Perhaps the people already hunting are not shooting does? Admittedly I don't see the crossbow crowd doing it differently. Its not the crossbow that kills female deer, its the shooter that kills female deer.... Why not tighten up restrictions on predator harvest and restore wolves to the state?

  30. I don't understand what anybody's problem is with a .ar15 the gun itself is harmless...it's the person behind the trigger That matters and there decisions that they make... saying a Ar Looks scarey is stupid...society today is becoming brainwashed And our kids are suffering from it... it's all about control. remember when you wer a Kid and you could play cowboys and Indians at school at recess Well guess what not in today's world either. Gotta be careful how they hold their pencils and what shirts they wear..and god for bid they make a hand gesture in a shape of a gun everything is so Pc today....sorry for ranting

  31. Blah blah blah....keep sticking your head in the sand. You better hope there are enough people fighting for your rights for you seeing as you do nothing. No banning of normal looking hunting weapons you say? How about semi auto shotguns with thumbhole stocks? How about some versions of Ruger 10-22s, etc. Please, trampled your rights...you cant help but try to turn every thread into a deer farm discussion can you?

  33. This to me is a very interesting story. I have been thinking very hard about issues like this recently as my wife and I are looking to buy a home in Rockland. One of my requirements was the ability to safely shoot a bow. I had thought long and hard (maybe not hard enough) and determined that I would need to build an 8'x8' backstop out of rough cut 1"x10". Even with that I realized that there could be no house within what I called a "safety cone" so that if I did mess up only trees were at risk. This makes me rethink it again. As a kid I learned how far an arrow could go out of a modern compound. 400 yds is nothing at the right angles. When I was a kid(10 or 12) my best friend and I would try to shoot arrows across a meadow as far as we could. Not very smart, but we could see everything from where we were to where the arrows landed and knew no one was there (the awesomeness of Greene Co.). Even with a 40lb dawn the distance was amazing with 65 to 70 lbs the distance is frightening.

  35. If a manufacturer is producing firearms for the military, They may push the look of the AR's. Some of the externals are probably shared with the civilian models. Economies of scale. Less different parts to produce = more profits. Home defense weapons tend to have the military look. They are designed to allow a greater range of body types and strengths to shoulder the gun. A gun that is designed to fit a 6' 3" 230 lbs guy will not comfortably fit his petite 5'6" wife/girlfriend. So it is a buy 2 or one that its adjustable on the fly in an emergency. If money is tight, which would buy, 2 or one that has an adjustable stock? You also need to remember that in past wars, you could bring home a souvenir gun and sword captured from the enemy. Lots of people have these old German, Russian, and Japanese military rifles that grand-dad or great grand-dad brought home from the war. Younger persons may want that military look, but with a modern gun and caliber. I am not into these AR types, but they have a rail/multi-rail system to make is easy to swap out scopes, lights, etc. that other groups have interests in. I prefer the look of a nice wood stock, not the synthetics. But that is my choice. A look is a look. Just because a kit car can look like a Ferrari or an SC Cobra, doesn't make it as fast as the real thing.

  36. The fact of the matter is that NYCC accomplished Something and the real crime (aside from the safe act) is that there are people on this site as well as the general Public whether for or against crossbows that are looking down or are not in support of the accomplishment made by NYCC. Crossbows cannot and will not ever take the place of what we lost with the safe act and nobody is asking anyone to reelect Cuomo because he "gave" us an inch.the victory which needs support whether for or against is that together people made a change and fought for what they believed in for the hunting sport. By saying NYCC lost your respect because they said thank you to Cuomo, and not wanting to fight for the hunting sport is telling younger generations if you lose just give up on everything. You should be ashamed of yourself The fact is that crossbows will pave the way for future hunting for SOME new hunters it may not bring in a lot, or more revenue or dramitically increase license sales but with every new hunter hooked on the sport, it's just that much longer we can call hunting a sport and that is the ultimate goal everyone should be in support of... 38. the picture on its own is in poor taste, I don't believe any animal that we kill should be displayed like trash...........there's no doubt that coyote need to be controlled, but no need to put them on display for everyone to see. Deer hunting is legal as well, but would probably draw some negative reactions if that was a truckload of them.

  39. Didn't really kill it over the weekend like I was hoping, I only found a small one yesterday and one old chewed up relic of an antler today bringing the yearly total to 24 sheds, My wife made a remarkable find today. We were driving down the road 40 mph and she turned to me and said "I think I just saw a big shed laying in the grass!" I turned around and sure enough there are white tines sticking up about 30 yds off the road. She went out and grabbed it and I realized it was last years antler from the big browtined buck I found a few weeks ago. I also found the matching antler from last year back in January. Together if they weren't chewed and busted up by the bean harvester the set would have grossed around 145". Needless to say, I am SO proud of her first road shed!!!

  44. best do a germ test, grab 100 seeds put on top of a damp paper towel on a tray cover with another damp paper towel ..put someplace dark and warm..wait 3-7 days and keep damp..count how many seeds germinate..80 will be 80 % ect. most seed loses 10-30 % germ as year goes by if not stored in a dry cool place. if its below 75% you might consider seeding it heavier than recommended.. much below 50% the cost of ground prep will out weigh the benifit of bad seed.. use as bird food if uncoated or over seed and existing plot with it.

  45. 20 pounds MAX. I took a pail and weighed 10 pounds... marked the pail at the 10 pound mark, then I measure off a 1/2 acre and put 10 pounds in my 3pt broadcast spreader. Last year... I tried to be quick and planted it too thick.

  46. The benefits for me is I dont have to buy a corn planter and I have very rocky soil. Rocks are not good for planters. I have planted corn 5 times in the past 7 years and have had great results. If you are not harvesting the corn, no need for a planter..... using one is fine and nothing wrong with it, but it may save you $$$ on equipment. Here is a thread that describes my method, in a few posts... good pics too http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/17454-pics-from-around-the-farm/

  48. Freekin' Awesome! My heart was racing, like I was there with you! Have you guys considered doing a "How to video" for our NY coyotes, maybe during the off season? Like what works best for you guys, tricks that you've learned, best places to call, etc... I must suck, as I've gone out many times over the years, but have only called in 1 coyote (that I know of). I've only gone out during daylight hours, but you guys seem to have no problem calling them in during the day!
