  1. Practice, Smactrice......Really! And you call yourself a hunter? Your statements are some of the most asinine I've heard on this forum! I can respect a man for what he believes in. But I have no respect for someone calling themselves a hunter while making shots guided by devine intervention!

  4. Almost all the guys I hunt with are older than me. Only one is younger........and he is 46 IIRC. A couple are gone now but we still have dad at 76, Tom D @ 78, Clark @ 72, Don H @ 84 etc................every year for the past 30 years I've been helping the old guys. It is getting tougher each year for them AND me! The biggest buck killed last year in camp was killed by Don H................. I got dad a new rifle this past winter to keep him interested and excited. He's really looking forward to this fall!

  6. I'll tell you what jackass, I've seen enough good people and children die way too early, that to trivialize his existence to the point of it focusing on hunters making bad shots or choices that turned out well just to explain why they killed an animal, to be an embarrassment to truly religious people....and quite honestly you should feel the same.....and don't even say that "God" had bigger plans for them, because I doubt that many buy that.........happy reading wolc123.

  7. Doc, I believe most non-hunters think a poacher is just a hunter who didn't follow the rules. I also believe they think most hunters do not follow the rules some of the time. So, in their minds, all poachers are hunters and most hunters poach sometimes. I see little hope of getting the Main Stream Media involved in correcting that erroneous perception. I see the MSM being the cause of it.

  8. Protesting doesnt do as much as getting involved with an organization that has some political pull, and matches up with your beliefs and values. Emailing, sending letters and making phone calls to your representatives are also part of how you help to make a change. I dont know about you, but i have much more going on in my life other than the discussions i have on this site.

  10. If someone believes that God guides their arrows and bullets, thats ok with me. But I think I'll keep practicing myself. And I would not be a good mentor,to give the young hunter the green light to shoot when he did. I would have waited for a clear shot at one deer. And I will be the first to tell ya. I make mistakes and learn from them.

  11. Shot Doe and fawn in one shot. I would blast the Dad for letting him shoot at such a tight group of animals. Its called mentoring and Dad did a bad job of it.

  13. Gun Control. It has already started at Gander Mountain Sporting Goods. It’s been some time since I last went shooting, but after a year of traveling around the world with my wife, I decided to pick up the hobby again. I went down to the nearest firearm provider to pick up some supplies. Just accessories – I already had a rack full of guns, but none of the ammo. I was hoping it would just be a quick in and out. I found what I needed pretty fast (even with my eyesight) and approached the counter. When I was ready to pay for my purchases of gun powder and bullets, the cashier said, “Strip down, facing me.” Making a mental note to complain to the NRA about the gun control wackos running amok, I did just as she had instructed. When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to how I should place my credit card in the card-reader. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer!I STILL DON’T THINK I LOOKED THAT BAD.

  14. Long story short, I lost my two screws that mount my stock to my barrel. I was wearing a pair of pants with a perfectly sized hole on the inside of the pocket. *face palm* My CVA is the Electra which I love by the way, but was discontinued after a short period of time so parts are nearly impossible to find online. I called and waited only about 2 minutes before speaking to someone. He was a nice guy who was clearly from the US and was easy to talk to (unlike any other CS support). It took him a minute or two to find the schematics and which screws I had lost. Then he takes my address and contact info. I then asked him about a breech plug because the electra works off of a completely electric ignition so the breech plug replacement is very hard to find since its discontinued as well. He simply said, sure I can add that too. I was then expecting him tell me the total cost with shipping after asking for my zip code, yet he just said "Okay, I'll throw in the breech plug too for you. No problem.". That was it. No credit card, no payment. There was no charge, it was on CVA. I looked up the pricing and it would have cost me well over $25 for new replacement parts and thats IF I could have even found any. CUDDOS TO CVA, I'll be a lifelong customer with them. I just wanted to share my experience because usually all you hear is bad things about customer service, especially within the firearms community with the recalls (Remington comes to mind). Anyone else have good/bad experience with CVA or other firearm companies they'd like to share?

  15. I don't study these jawbones the way some of you do, but I think I know an OLD set of teeth when I see them. I found these in the swamp the other day but haven't found a skull to match them up with yet. It's gotta be in there somewhere, as there are many other bones around. The pearly whites are from a 2.5 yr old I killed last fall. I just added them for comparison purposes. The flat set appears to me like it would be barely above the gum line they are worn so much. Any of you guys got an age guesstimation on a set of chompers like this?

  18. Years ago a buddy had broken his leg 2 weeks before the season opened .... we helped him (carried on my back) to the base of a treestand and we put on a drive when the time came , he filled his tag and we did the drag ! Helping someone (Older or broken leg) is also an enjoyable part of the hunting experience ! We all are a success !

  21. Cool find! Oldest deer I've shot or handled was 5.5 and he had way more going on than that deer! I bet a biologist at the DEC would love to see that but I wouldn't give it to them without a promise of letting you know their findings. Keep us posted if you do that.

  22. Rob, I don't really agree with what you are saying, nor do I believe in protesting. However, NY Dove Hunting is developing a National Hunting and Fishing Day Strategy, We hope to get volunteers into booths all around the state. The interest has been weak. As a matter of fact, it is even a challenge to get show organizers or other host sites to respond to us. We will probably have to harp on this initiative for two years before we get hunters to accept the idea and participate. A lot of that harping will be done by key board - you betcha. We are also creating a Power Point presentation. We will be traveling around to as many audiences as we can. We also want to train others to give this presentation.

  23. Well I joined the forums and loved being a part of them. Around last year I noticed my taptalk app wouldn't let me log in, and after trying to log in on my computer, It seemed like I was deleted from HuntingNY forums. I tried sending multiple emails to the site to try and see what happened to my account and never received a response. ANYWAYYYY... I'm back under the same name. I got a great 10 pt buck last year and a couple does for the freezer so you can say it was a successful year!

  25. be sure of your target and what is beyond it. while true it was the kids first archery deer the father could have waited for a safer shot presentation. no one should pick and choose which safety rules to follow, would this even be open to discussion had he been skyline shooting with a gun? Do the right thing and wait for a clean shot at a single deer. its always better to pass on a marginal shot than to try and push it only to later regret it. with a mentored youth you explain to them why they were not allowed to shoot in certain circumstances. They should understand and accept the reason and if they can't maybe that's the time to reconsider whether its time for them to start hunting. be sure of your target and what lies beyond because once you pull the trigger or let go of the bow string there is no calling the shot back and there are no retakes.

  26. Take it up in the stand with you this fall, you may be surprised at what happens. I definitely would not have taken my most symmetric and second largest racked buck ever were it not for reading mine up in the stand a couple years ago. I just wish I could remember the passage I was reading when it fell from my hands, leading to the big bucks untimely demise, after I climbed down to pick it up. Happy reading and hunting JJB.

  28. I think about this everytime I hunt with my Father......that's what really killed it for me with the antler restrictions, he had to pass on bucks the last few years and it really bothered me thinking those deer might have been his last bucks, but hey, that's not what's important to a lot of people.

  30. The kid and the father made a mistake by taking and advising the shot, but the prayer the kid said right after sealed the deal for them, and led to a happy ending to the story. All of our mistakes were paid for by a man on a cross long ago. I feel sorry for all those who don't accept that fact.

  31. This is another example of poor shot selection. The kid was not trying to hit the deer behind, but had the father been on the ball, he would have seen a very bad shot being set up and should have told the kid to wait. He dropped the ball there, and it could have turned out very ugly. I am going to give them the benefit of a doubt and assume that wherever they were hunting, he had the appropriate tags to cover the two deer. But I would have liked to have seen the father say something about taking that kind of shot so the kid could have learned something, and anybody watching that video does not take this double kill on as a goal. We can only hope that that point was made off-camera. I think the father gets the "unethical" ding on this one.

  32. My friend who won a stone sheep hunt in the Yukon a couple of years ago has drawn an elk permit for this year in the Valles Caldera Elk Perserve in New Mexico. Only a 1% chance of drawing the tag and he got it! Has an great chance of shooting a 380" to 400" class bull. He is a lucky bas^&$#. With his luck, I'm sure he'll draw a Maine moose permit now too.

  34. Anything over 4.5 is tough to judge. Id agree that it had to be a pretty old deer, or it was eating rocks.

  36. From this discussion I come to a few conclusions. 1)AR will reduce the herd due to extra doe being taken 2)AR will cause larger deer basically due to extra food availability. (Not larger antlers) Basically the more food makes a healthier herd but this does not help hunters harvest more deer. Lower deer numbers equal a healthy herd but less for us to hunt. This was a goal for AR. We should not be surprised. When I say larger in effect they are just fatter for the winter, not larger in size. 3)AR is more about having a well balanced herd but that usually results in less deer, less harvest and more hunters who loose interest due to low sightings. Great for trophy hunters but not good for hunting in general. 4)With less deer in an area they will gravitate to the properties that have the resources they require and will not have to travel long distances to get the sustenance they need to survive the rut. This less travel results in less deer taken on top of the fact that less deer are in the area. I was once an AR advocate but talking with members on this forum has changed my view. I still trophy hunt but would rather let my hunting brothers and sisters choose what they want to shoot vs letting the DEC choose for them. I believed the hype of the AR at first but now as it has progressed I can see it is really just another tool to get the herd reduced as much as possible vs getting big deer for hunters to shoot. I still do believe in AR but think it should be handled by the land owners. Most that do this type of control have a great population with many large bucks to hunt but they usually have neighbors with similar interests. It's a fine line to get a good balance on a deer herd and it really needs to be micromanaged. Regional AR's are not the answer, unless you want to cull the herd.
